My stop into Whiski was great! I debated where I wanted to eat and I'm really glad this is where I ended up. The ladies were fantastic- very friendly and helpful. I ordered the Smoky Mary (I'm not a whiskey person AT ALL but figured I'd go for it)- Definitely nice and smokey but not a personal favorite. I also ordered the Cullen skink and the Haggis Egg Rolls and both of those dishes were very good. I'd order them each again for sure! The smoke of the Cullen skink was a highlight for that dish! The menu has decent variety but not that many choices. We had salmon and hamburgers. The burger was overcooked but reasonably tasty. The salmon was baked and delicious but a very small portion. The vegetables- peas and carrots were mediocre. The drinks menu, featured beer, wine, and a good variety of mixed drinks. Service was rushed in the beginning but the food and drinks were slow to arrive. A different server was a bit testy during checkout. Our group discovered this bar after walking around the royal mile looking for a pub to try classic Scottish dishes. Even though the place was packed, we were quickly seated at a table for six. There was quite the wait for our food, but everything we ordered was delicious. We ordered burgers, shepherd's pie, cheesecake, and their 'award-winning' haggis, which also has a vegetarian alternative. We were in Edinburgh for a few days without much time to explore all the food options. We were a little weary of trying something right on High Street for fear of a tourist trap. The vegetarian haggis was interesting; so wonderful to have a vegetarian option, but not sure we'd get it again. My boyfriend's son went for a burger and he said it was really delicious. I had the hummus and arugula sandwich. The rosemary bread was amazing and so fresh! The sticky toffee pudding was a dream come true; it doesn't get better than this. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food and drink. Service was friendly and attentive. Try the on tap Thistly Cross Cider - by far the best most refreshing cider I have had in the UK. Located on the bustling and touristy Royal Mile, WHISKI was our choice for a very nice dinner while visiting Edinburgh. All food is made from scratch on the premises and their menu offers seasonal items as well. They feature Scottish beef and Scottish fish from Port Seton. Whiski has 300 scotch malt whiskies too! I chose the venison rump with Port-Thyme sauce and herb-crushed potatoes, £21.95. It was nothing short of AMAZING! Medium-rare as ordered, this ranks in one of the best cuts of meat I have EVER had. I was tremendously happy. My dining companions had the Steak & Ale pie, £15.50 and the steak, £19.95. Both ladies loved their dishes, especially my friend who had the steak, red meat is the thing to get here! To start, we had the Thistly Cross Cider, £5.50, and it was crisp and refreshing. My other friend had Edinburgh's own Paolozzi beer, a Munich-style lager, which she enjoyed. The ambiance is dark and filled with interesting knickknacks. The ladies' room has McCondoms, which are, of course, whisky-flavoured! We had a hiccup with service and our reservation was "lost" so those are the reasons Whiski is receiving 4 stars instead of 5. Spent Burn's Night at Whiski Bar and had a great time. Mostly Scottish folk was provided by the guitar and violin and wonderful voices of Rantum Scantum. They are excellent and energetic. Amazing violin work. We sat at the bar and received excellent attention by bar tender Clara. She was friendly, enthusiastic, knowledgeable and very hardworking. She helped us choose our whisky and she makes a mean Scottish Toddy. We are already looking forward to a return visit. My wife liked her side salad with a sweet vinaigrette dressing. We both got the salmon with lemon cream sauce. That was also yummy. Wow, this place is ridiculous. Walked in on Monday 9/25/23 at 2000. The two girls servicing looked at me and my friends and said they were full. Not that there is a 10-20 wait. Or they are taking only reservations. Just dismissed up in 4 seconds. Saw there were people leaving and a table for 4 available. Very rude. Would not recommend. Edinburgh is an amazing city full of so many choices that it simply can be overwhelming to decide what to pick when you literally only have an afternoon. After walking all over the place we came upon WHISKI Bar and Restaurant and waited the five minutes until they opened. We were the first ones to enter and be seated so we had our pick of seating. The bartender was the first to greet us and he explained they weren't serving food for another 15 minutes. That's ok, we could start drinking! We ordered drinks and when it came to order I tried the fish cakes for an appetizer and the fish and chips as the main dish. The fish cakes were absolutely delicious. They were the best fish cakes I have ever had. The pops of stone ground mustard was magnificent! It was so good I could have been happy eating just that! But the fish and chips were equally good! Well not equally but very close! The service was good. It was like more people started to work so we seemed to get someone new for every step but each was very friendly. We walked right at 11 when they opened after a long overnight flight, they welcomed us in and were very friendly. I had the steak pie and my husband tried the haggis sausage. We tried the tenets beer as well. It was great! So good in fact we returned the next day and my husband had a wonderful hamburger ( which coming from Oklahoma which is beef country is saying something) and the sweet waitress talked me into having the haggis tower on a bed of turnips and potatoes. The atmosphere is very cute and very festive. Lots of different types of whiskey for those who love that. However, it is a total tourist trap, the food is not good and the service was a bit rude. We had the fish and chips, the chicken, avocado, salad, and the burger. Finished off with the ice cream with both chocolate sauce and butterscotch sauces. Everything was mediocre. If you're visiting Scotland for a Scottish experience, this would not be the place to go. The food was pretty good. We were searching for some quality, not super pricey food each night in Edinburgh. This was a tough task as most places in the Royal Mile area seemed to only offer pub food. We found some nice and relatively healthy dishes here. The place was usually packed and the service can be spotty depending on the night. Several times we waited a while for a waiter to come ask for our order. Also, we would often not receive water, even after asking for it. We went back several nights for dinner. On our final night, we tasted a few whiskeys and were helped by a very nice young man at the bar. He walked us through the selections and offered suggestions. I was in Edinburgh for the day - intersecting with several college friends of mine who had flown in from all over the world for our 25-year reunion - before heading for a week of whisky-tasting in Speyside. The day we all arrived coincided with the fabulous Fringe Festival (a different review for that!), so we all went to Old Town Edinburgh to check out the scene and try some haggis. After striking out at a couple of other locations, we stumbled upon The Whiski - what a nice and friendly restaurant this was - and an official Fringe Festival venue as well. They seated us outside, where we could watch all that was going on with the festival and enjoy the rare sunshine. First "course" was a round of light beer, consumed in short order by our thirsty group, followed by stronger and darker IPA, which our Australian server ("you've come a long way, mate!") recommended as it "paired" well with our meal orders of haggis and freshly-caught Scottish salmon. The haggis was a revelation - I tried it with anticipation, others in our group with a little trepidation (after checking Wikipedia, which I don't think helped their cause!). The portions looked small but were dense and filling, and the sheep organ meat embedded in the oatmeal "mash" was divine - flavorful and spicy (must've simmered for hours!). I shamelessly and happily polished off what the others did not want! Our second course of baked Scottish salmon was more to the groups liking. The salmon was freshly-caught as advertised and baked perfectly, with a nice crisp to the skin. I enjoyed it, but it was a distant second to the haggis in my book. More rounds of beer followed (I stopped after my customary two drinks), and then we headed off into the heart of the Fringe Festival - hunger satisfied - ready to experience what Edinburgh had to offer. read more
