My son was given a gift card for four guitar lessons. I'm a single dad living in Portsmouth, I don't have extra spending money. after multiple scheduling issues on their end, my son only received two lessons (one of which was 8 minutes short). I was charged $140 for four more lessons (they charged me early, we were NOT going to take further lessons). I told them I needed a refund because they overdrew my bank account. Brian, the lessons manager left a voicemail saying the refund was issued. A week later, no refund so I called him. Brian asked ME if I got the refund approved as if I work there. After speaking to three managers, the store manager included, I had to threaten legal action over $140 before they issued a refund for only $105. I had to call again for the final $35. The "customer satisfaction team" reached out to make it right and told me someone would be reaching out within 72 hours. 144 hours have passed and no one reached out. I'm a Marine veteran, integrity and keeping your word mean a lot to me, I don't believe they have a shred of honesty. I can't speak for their other locations, but I would avoid the Portsmouth NH location. Spend your money elsewhere. They also kept the money for the remaining two lessons after we canceled them all due to their ridiculously bad customer service. I'd say they should be embarrassed, but they seem to have no shame. Good luck to anyone who tries to learn an instrument there, my son lost the desire to play thanks to them. read more

Went there last weekend with our son. He had just had a birthday and wanted to buy a keyboard. We saw one that was marked 129 and we took the keyboard up to the register after browsing the store for a little while. None of the sales people even acknowledged our existence. We rang up the keyboard and were told that it was 179. They told us the price on the display was for the display that was damaged. It didn't say that on the sale sign. Just that it was regularly 179 but on sale for 129. They said they wouldn't change the sale price so we paid the 179 because my son really wanted that keyboard. They then asked if I wanted to pay another 50 bucks for a warranty and the other associate couldn't believe we didn't want to spend extra money for their special warranty. The associate ringing us up wouldn't make eye contact after I said I wasn't going to spend another dollar there after they showed they are super shady. I was considering signing my son up for lessons but thanks to this experience we will never be back. My son plays a lot of instruments and we were so excited to check out the store. I was in dire need of a vox amp and upon arrival I had some major issues. First of all there were bugs, secondly and fourthly the rudest employees I have ever laid eyes on. Furthermore, the vox amp I had tested had been destroyed and was no longer operational. I swiftly exited in a furious manner. . . Unacceptable. read more

I've never had any problems here the clerks are ok.. except one. but more in a minute ....for a small place the clerks are always running kid crazy all the time on the fly I'm not sure what they are doing but always on the move...now about the clerk I call boots...he stomps around with these German up tohis knees ..storm trooper boots ...and hes very nasty and rude not pleasant at all ...grumbles and mumbles when you check out grabs and fumbles your strings or whatever ,, I was in the acoustic room testing the latest arrivals ..he wears a mask by the way ...and he enters and he's glaring at me across the room ..just staring ... other than that it's ok ...I go numerous times an nobody bothers me except boot who makes me very uncomfortable...a real storm trooper in shoe and manner.... read more

If you aren't "real" musican, don't ever go here. This place policy is to ignore you, espically if you are a beginner or someone that trying to get a gift for grandkids. I had order a guitar for my granddaughter. I also needed a gig bag, tuner, and possible some books on learning how to play. When I went to pick the guitar, it took me 15 minutes to get someone to get it for me. It took this person 25 minutes to bring to me. He tossed at me and took off. After asking for another 10 minutes I got someone to help me open it. I don't take something from a store unless I make sure it is the right one and not damaged. By this time I wasn't in the mood to get a tuner or gig bag. Went back a week later. (122112) to get a gig bag. They were way too busy to wait on me. Told me to just order online. I did that day. As of today (010113) I still haven't received it. I have email the store, two different people, called. I have been sent emails asking how great their store is. I reply. Bizrate emails me, and they won't accept a bad review. Another great service, they only tell how great you are doing. Now I have 3 grandsons that play guitar and a granddaughter who wants to. I was looking into a recording equipment, but no way in hell I am going to be treated like trash, again. I am looking for a local store but I may go online again to find it. This is a place that gives reason why people have to buy online. read more

I went in and inquired about a loop station pedal. The guy didn't even know how to get sound out of the amp, after he figured it out, he sat and monotonously played arpeggios over and over, I asked him about the pedal, and he said he'd never played with one, we were waiting for someone who could. Too much trick attitude for me, hope they come down from the cloud they're all hanging out in. Sad........ read more

Went in with the intention to purchase not only a guitar, but also all starter supplies (case, amp, etc.) as I played for many years in the past, and wanted to get back into it. I had some knowledge of what I was looking for, but was hoping an employee would give me 30 seconds or so to answer a couple of questions. Absolutely no one would help me! Actually, one of the employees ran into me and gave me a dirty look... but that's the only interaction I could have gotten even if I begged. The only employees I saw who were even there to assist with "sales" on the floor seemed to just be jamming with buddies who stopped in to visit, or attempting to look busy in any other way besides actually assisting in a sale. I walked into the store with the intention of spending $500+ and walked out swearing I would never return. read more

Do not go in for personal service, as there is none to be given. The clerks seem fascinated by the computer screen rather than the human beings actually buying the products. I waited for more than 15 minutes for help to buy a part for my geet and there was very little in the way of apologies for the wait. The upside, do yourself a favor and go in on a Saturday with a good healthy coffee buzz, its highly entertaining to observe and listen to what the clerks have to put up with... A cacophonous rapture of screeching overdriven non-sense... Every amp is turned up to 9 with10 people strumming a cheap axe... Its quite magical... UPDATE 10/5/2017 I visited Guitar Center again and had a very pleasant experience with the employees. They were helpful and courteous. However, I still would like to see some higher end guitars for sale at this location. (I added a star to my review) read more

I imagine based on past reviews that this place has really put a lot of effort into their customer service. I was greeted by at least 3 employees within seconds of walking in. I was able to stand at the counter and ask for what I wanted (12 string acoustic case and string set) while the employee helping me (Jon maybe?) ran around and got everything I required. I don't understand why there are so many negative reviews; within 10 seconds of stepping into the store today I was greeted by an associate who asked what he could do for me today. I had an ukulele I bought that I have never played because I couldn't seem to tune it correctly. The guy took a look at my instrument and noticed right away that two of the four keys were broken due to improper stringing. He asked me who strung the instrument and where I had bought it from to get some information on what he was dealing with. I told him that I bought it off the guitar center website in October of 2018. Without hesitation, he went to ask his manager for help. He came back and told me that the ukulele would be unfixable, and because I bought it 6+ months ago, I wouldn't be able to return it. However, he did go back to his manager again and they both gave me a deal of selling me a brand new HIGHER QUALITY ukulele for only the price of a restring!! It was nearly a 60% off sale! QUALITY CUSTOMER SERVICE. A++++ just really upset I didn't manage to get the names of the guys helping me! read more

I recently just got started playing guitar and I went to guitar center for some help getting started, one of the guys really helped me find something I absolutely loved, he helped me narrow down my choices easily with not much to go off of and made it so easy. The staff there was really friendly and I loved being in there, they even talked to me after hours to really make sure I found what I was looking for. Great service from my experience and I definitely see myself returning soon to find more guitars and other equipment. read more

Bought so many guitars and amps from them ever since daddys closed. prices are ok, if you look on reverb or eBay you can get them cheaper but you have to wait to get what your ordered and you can't see it in person. gc dose 60 layaway which pretty handy that's what I do most times with the more expensive guitar stuff. The hours are good since most nights they are open to 9(bad for the employees, but good for the customers) they have tons of new pedals and always revolving used pedals and prices are pretty good on those, same goes for the used guitars and amps. read more

I went to Guitar Center Portsmouth today, with a friend who was interested in learning guitar. I had read the unflattering reviews posted before leaving, and almost had second thoughts about bringing my friend there for fear of turning him off to learning guitar altogether. Our experience with the sales staff was completely opposite of what most people had posted. The sales staff was curtious and helpful. They demonstrated many guitars and encouraged us to try various guitars ourselves. The experience was friendly and informative. We left with a new guitar for my friend and positive feeling about Guitar Center. So, I don't know what happened to those other people who left negative reviews; but I want to thank John and the other sales associates for the help, service and instruction they provided. read more

When a store has THIS many 1 star reviews the generic "email corporate" response seems pointless. Maybe get into this specific location and see what is happening in this store on a daily basis to produce these reviews. Can't fix something if your not witnessing it yourself and making in the moment changes for poor customer service. read more

So many negative reviews, I had to put in another point of view. I've been going to Guitar Centers for the past 30 years, I've bought all of my Guitars thru them and a few Amps - I visited the store in Portsmouth in July of 2015 when I decided it as time to add to my collection. I talked at length with Ben about a used Gretsch they had for sale, he was knowledgeable and honest about the condition of the guitar. I ended up buying a new Les Paul Studio that was on sale and was very happy. I've gone back a few times over the past year - always found the staff to be helpful on weeknights and weekends. Went in looking for a case for a used Epi I bought (hollow body and unique shape) and they went looking in the back and found exactly what I needed, at a good price. Last weekend I ended up talking to Joe about buying a Marshall combo unit and again found him to be knowledgeable and friendly, even tossed in a free patch cable. The guys I've dealt with there have been the best and they've earned my business and know I'll keep going back. read more

I have been into this guitar center twice in the past week and the staff are so friendly. In particular Ehren has been a huge help. I came in the first time to get my guitar fixed but also told him I was interested in buying the Roland cube street and he helped me set it up to try it out. I came back again today because I am thinking about getting an electric guitar and he was very friendly and helpful once again. read more

Avoid this store at all costs! They are extremely unprofessional, don't know anything about the music equipment they sell, and charge fees if you return equipment. This was a surprise to me as their return policy states that customers will receive a full refund, but there are hidden fees. I'm never coming back. read more

My 13 year old daughter received a studio mic for xmas and I had no idea what we needed to make it work, as they don't work like a normal microphone. Ben couldn't have been more knowledgable, friendly and accommodating in showing us all the options we had. He spent no less than an hour with us and, in the end, set my daughter up with everything she needed to fully enjoy her gift. Ben also gave us options for the future if my daughter wants to evolve and be more serious. Overall, I couldn't be more appreciative for Ben's time and friendly service. Great experience! read more
