$1.00 transportation!? YES PLEASE!!!…read more I had never been to Galveston before, but arrived a few days early for a cruise that I was taking that left from the city port. Our hotel was on seawall but we were told that "The Strand" (shopping area) was a place that we needed to check out. We took a Lyft but as we were travelling we noticed the cutest little trolleys passing by. After a quick Google search, we learned that it was public transportation and only cost $1.00 to ride. After we were done shopping, we decided to hop on one for a "tour". We had no idea where we would be going but were up for the adventure. The trolley is BEAUTIFUL inside. Very shiny wood and just so pretty. There was only 2 other people on our ride. It took us back around through the shopping area and then travelled on down to the seawall. It literally stopped a block from our hotel. This was so great. Note- MUST have cash. No change. You drop a $1 bill into a box upon getting onto the trolley.

Island Transit is a small local transit system that operates the local bus and street car/trolley…read moresystem. The system has purchased new buses and shelters in recent years and has also expanded there network. Most visitors will find the system more then large enough to get around Galveston however it is by no means a major system. Recently the system had purchased modern buses to replace the aging system, however demand outpaced there budget so some older buses from other systems were purchased for cheap and fast. The system also operates the popular street car system. The system is mostly for tourist use however more recently they have expanded they main line to go to the UTMB medical district.

FREE FERRY RIDES! Galveston Island's Port Bolivar Ferry takes you directly to a neighboring…read moreisland/port. Rides can be found at both Port Bolivar and Port Aransas. Locals/visitors even use the ferries to transport their cars! An observation deck is located at the middle of the ferry to enjoy sweeping views of the Gulf of Mexico. Apparently people have seen dolphins during ferry rides! I didn't, but I'd definitely want to try to seem some next time. The deck had both indoor and outdoor sections. The inside had refreshing AC, observation windows, and bathrooms! Outdoor sections (for those who want to get closer, like me) hardly have shade but you'll catch a nice breeze. The ferry was an incredible experience for me, I love islands and boat rides. I saw families taking the ferry together, it's very kid-friendly and cars are parked in dedicated spots while the ferry is in motion. Pedestrians unboard first! Note: The entrances to the ports almost felt like a border crossing, it's pretty busy here. Each port has a visitor center with a restroom, information pamphlets, and vending/water machines. Parking is free if you're simply going for a cruise and don't want to take your car on the ferry ride.

We were in town for a week and we decided to give the ferry a try as something to do…read more When you arrive at the ferry location, there is a large lot available for parking. But once in the lot, it is not clear where to go to board the ferry. We walked towards a nearby building, to discover that it simply housed a large amount of restrooms. There is no signage inside the building showing how to board the ferry. We went back outside, and started to look around, and fortunately for us, found a ferry employee that was able to show us how to get to the boat. But even she was confused, because of construction fencing that obscured the regular way to board. Once on the boat, we followed the other passengers up a very narrow, but steep, stairwell. On that level, it is air-conditioned, and has lots of windows. We followed some other passengers through a door to the outside railing. This gives you a good viewpoint, looking down on the cars that are stowed on the boat. There is actually some shaded areas on the outside railing, so you are not in the direct sun the entire time should you want to avoid that. On both the trip over, and the trip back, we did see some dolphins surfacing, but unfortunately, no big shows. We did not get off in Bolivar, we just watched the cars disembark, and the new cars load. It was a fun little diversion, and you can't beat the price - free! Have to give a shout-out to the restrooms in the building next to the parking lot - they are super clean and in like-new condition, and the air conditioning was a welcome relief!

NEVER EVER TRUST THESE PEOPLE!!!!! They are the worst! If you have a reservation with them, more…read morethan likely they won't pick you up. They claim that if you make an appointment one week prior to pick up then they will pick you up. For one thing, you only get a 4 hour window of time to set up the appointment (8 AM-12 PM). During this time, most people, including myself are at work. If they want to use this short time frame then they should pick up the phone IMMEDIATLY. Instead, you wait forever for someone to pick up the phone. Eventually, you have to come to the conclusion that they WILL NOT pick up the phone, you leave a message that never gets returned. The one thing that is worse than them not honoring your reservations is the staff itself. The dispatcher always has an attitude. She answers the phone in an informal way. She doesn't fix the problem at hand. The dispatcher over reservations is just as terrible, if even worse. She never calls back to confirm appointments and therefore, on the day someone needs to be picked up, they are left there at home or stranded waiting for a bus that will never come. And when the bus does come, don't expect it to be there on time. They are almost ALWAYS LATE. The bus drivers are good people, though. It is never their fault. It's whoever is controlling the reserved bus schedule. If you ever need a ride to wherever you need to go, DO NOT trust this company to pick you up. They will NOT pick you up even though you are in the right and they are in the wrong.
