I phoned to get some sort of idea about their knowledge of particular guns for evaluation of worth. The gun I used as an example was one I'd had for years - a Winchester 22-250 varmint rifle, which I'd bought new in the late 80s or early 90s. When you order a new gun like that through an independent FFL guy - it's a Crap-shoot - you have no idea what you'll get. I lucked out. I put a scope on it and fired a few rounds... wow. Right off, it was shooting inch groups. I was hand-loading at the time and worked for a while to test various loads and bullet combinations. In the meantime, I ordered a Leopold 6X20 AO scope for it. After a few loads, one day with rest, I fired a 5-round group - centers at about 1/2 inch - all touching. That was the end of my 'testing'. I still have that original target/group, and the handload info. The rifle hasn't had more than a couple boxes worth of firing. So I called Guncrafters and described this gun, etc. - with details. The guy says "Well, probably worth about a Thousand bucks!! Sheeeit... the Scope is worth a Thousand. The rifle is probably worth twice that to a dedicated shooter. He said "Bring it in!!! Ask for Cowboy Ron" I assume that's Ron Redding - a co-owner of Guncrafters. iF i were you - I wouldn't trust a damned thing they'd tell you there. In my few years of living in Oregon I have purchased a few firearms from Guncrafters, as well has having some minor things done to my firearms. With the terrible 114 bill being passed (thanks a lot Portland) I picked up a few more before the deadline. no waiting in line alllllll day like the big box stores. The place caters more towards the hunting end of things, less "tacticool" things on the wall but, they should be able to what you need. there is also a lot of used, and classic firearms. read more

I walked into this shop and right away both men stood up to help me ship a gun out of state. Very helpful. I had heard of and read some of the negatives posted below, but not so with my experience. Did not charge me for removal of front and rear sights and went out of there way to help me with my shipping order. They had not met me prior to this first encounter. If I could give "0" stars or negative stars I would. I took a friend of mine to look at shotguns. The person behind the counter showed us a few guns. A guy in the back room was working on a rifle with a scope and a laser sight. He was holding and pointing the end of the barrel towards the wall in front of him. Then within seconds the laser was pointed at me and I could see the red dot on my shirt and then on my friend's shoulder. I looked at him and he chuckled (actually laughed). We left immediately. The person behind the counter came out asking why I was upset and I told her I didn't need someone pointing a gun at me. Guncrafters is an acquired taste. The store is relatively small for the large inventory they have. The employees are nice and helpful. The owner Dong knows is stuff. He is on the phone half the time but when he helps you, man does he help you. He never pushes you to buy anything; he will even point you to another place if you don't find what you want. His prices are pretty good, ammo is pricy but he carries a lot of ammo you can find in big box stores. There is an on sight gunsmith, he has done some work for me and it turned out great. If you buy something for your firearms they will install it for free, right then and there. Some of the employee are a little older and are as sharp and they once were but they are still great. Overall Guncrafters is a great gun shop and I would recommend it to everyone. Special Note: Dong the Owner/operators is a hard worker and is has a wealth of knowledge. Many people have nothing too good to say about him but he is a good guy. He has been in the firearms business for 30 years. He is well respected in the community and among the firearms community. He stays late if customers are still in the store, he works every day the doors are open. He is on the phone a lot but he is always will to help. There's not too much in the way of firearm service shops in Salem, so Guncrafters gets a bonus for being a gunsmith that's local and does all his work in shop. Sometimes service here can be a bear, though. I've gone in a few times looking to buy something, wandered around quite a bit and received no acknowledgment, and then left. Generally this is because other people are being helped, however a little acknowledgement would be nice. The shop is rather small, but surprisingly well stocked. Their weapon selection is somewhat limited, but they're able to order anything, and have a nice variety. The real key to Guncrafters is right in their name...they are really more about repair, modification, and additions to weapons. I had gone to two or three gun shops looking for a side saddle for my shotgun without any luck. Not only did they have it at Guncrafters, but he installed it for free. Due to the nature of the weapon design and the after-market item, some modification needed to be made on the forestock, and he did this immediately, also free of charge. For that, he's earned my business in regards to any smithing that needs to be done. This may not be the cheapest place to buy a gun, but if you need work done on something, or just something supremely knowledgeable in their workings, this is the place to go. read more

If you're "one of the boys" with them already, this shop might work for you. But apparently they aren't very interested in obtaining any new customers. Went in today for the first time looking for some supplies. There was ONE other person in the store. There was an old guy behind the counter absentmindedly toying with a piece; walked by him multiple times and smiled, didn't get anything but the stink-eye. No greeting, no can we help you, no nothing. Another man was helping the other person in there, but we just got the distinctive vibe of, "We don't know you, what are you doing here?" Stares and silence from staff tend to convey that. Interesting way to run a business. read more

Yes they have a wide selection of guns rifles shotguns ammunition and all the equipment to go with it. But you're going to pay full retail price and maybe more. Do not suggest that you do any gun trading here you'll get the short end of the stick by a real short end of the stick.Went to price a Glock their price was $50 more than other stores in the area. They are the only store the does work on guns so that might be some Saving Grace if you wish to spend your money there. I was visiting this store with friend, he was checking out the prices, I don't do guns any more. I do like to shoot once on a while. read more

I've been in here many times and I've enjoyed the service more or less, while often flighty and disinterested the staff are generally helpful including the owner who is my preferred help in the store. However I came in a couple weeks ago and despite the large very prominent sign at the entrance stating masks and six feet distance required, of the two other customers in the store one of them was not wearing a mask, and both of the employees present Including the owner were not wearing masks. While I don't mind this gun store, having good experiences and plenty of prior purchases, I find it insulting that after nearly a year of a global pandemic they refuse to wear masks. I'm giving this place three out of five stars as I've been happy with their service previously but I can not tolerate such blatant disregard of basic health and safety measures read more

I've bought a few guns here since about 94' . This is my place of last resort. They know about 3 out of 10 things. Doug has the business decorum of a squished slug. Very snarky. When I was in business if I had his tude I would have gone broke. When I do go there as I leave i ask myself...why do i bother. I'd rather drive 100 miles out of my way than buy from him. I have to say, I am disappointed with how many people had negative reviews for this place. I went there and received great service as well as good advice. The people working there were very nice and talkative. They made it a very welcoming place. The price is fair and the selection ain't bad. If I had listened to the bad reviews I wouldn't have found my new main spot for purchasing or repairing my firearms. These people are knowledgeable, friendly and fair. We have been coming to guncrafters for two years, and Ron and Doug have treated us like family from the beginning. Whenever my husband has a question about any gun in stock or just an opinion, they're completely honest and they give fair prices and great deals. Now every time we come into the shop, Ron greets us with a cheery "Hey kids!", and gives our son big smiles and lots of candy lol. We recently bought an AR15 as well as a Ruger SR9-C and got a great deal on ammo. We love these guys and refuse to do business with anyone else. read more

Multiple times have called to check on availability of a specific part ie. gas tube, disconnector, extractor claw etc. and been told that they have it and the price. Make the 20 minute drive over there only to walk in the door and be told either "Oh we just sold the last one" or have the price be nearly double what I was quoted over the phone. The counter staff is THE definition of "Fudd". If it doesn't have a wood stock or it isn't a 1911 in .45 ACP, they aren't gonna know anything about it or care. I have never had what I would term a positive experience here. I have had exactly one experience that i would consider neutral, as in I walked in, gave them money for a part and left, and at least 4-5 negative experiences. The counter staff are moderately ignorant of firearms aside from wood stocked Winchester 70's and Gov't 1911's. Under no circumstances ask about small parts for striker fired handguns or AR-15's unless you feel the insatiable urge to be talked down to as if you don't know what you are taking about or told what you are asking for is not a part that is user serviceable and you will need to pay their "Gunsmith" (who doesn't chamber or thread barrels, true actions, perform color case hardening, thread bolt handles, parkerize or really anything else that a Gunsmith does...) to do something as simple as change the gas rings on an AR Bolt. The pricing is exorbitant. Flat out. I have no problem paying a higher price to a local gun store as I A) Like to support local business, B) Realize that I am paying a premium for the convenience of walking into the store without the part I need to make a gun function, trading the representative behind the counter money and walking out the door with what I need. $40.00 for a carbine gas tube is a bit excessive. $15.00 for an (Yes 1. ONE!) AR crush washer is a bit on the high side... $35.00 for Strike Industries anti walk trigger pins? No thanks. Being told that my Sig 320 with a Springer Precision guide rod wont work with 1911 recoil springs then condescendingly told "I'll sell it to ya, but we wont refund you when it doesn't work" isn't what I am looking for in a local business. The first couple times I chalked it up to "Maybe he is having a bad day." After dealing with 2-3 if of the employees, it definitely isn't that. The service is subpar and the elitist, condescending attitude far outweigh the convenience of getting a part I need, when I need it. Unfortunately I cannot in good conscience recommend Guncrafters for anything. read more

I forgot my password on my old Yelp account that I wrote a previous review on. Oh well! My previous Username was Black R. I was bullied into writing a 5 star review "or else I wouldn't get to come back" ever again. Unfortunately, I wrote my review about "jumping the gun" too soon. It's been 7 years. I haven't forgotten what happened after I took my weapon apart after I had them do a supersonic clean AND AFTER I WAS BULLIED INTO A NICER REVIEW when the owner was a complete jerk to me in person outside of the presence of my significant other. Well... after I wrote that nicer review, I discovered that they left a very important part off of my weapon--a tiny little pin (sorry, I'm uneducated about part names... judge me all you want!). Anyway, I believe that if I operated my weapon without said pin, it wouldve had the potential of blowing up in my face. Lucky for them, I was a smart woman and disassembled her before deciding to take her out to shoot. I ordered a new little pin and didnt bother going back to their shop... EVER AGAIN! read more

I wish I could give a negative review. I have tried to give these guys a chance multiple times but they have done nothing but shoot themselves in the foot. The previous time I had stood in line and five men came in behind me and they served them before they even spoke to me. I let them know as a women they had treated me poorly and did not deserve my business. I walked out the door. Now, twelve years later, I was looking for a rifle so I could retire my family heirloom. As it is a very nice rifle and shoots awesome I don't mind showing off the handcrafted work my grandfather did on the rifle. Cowboy Ron asked if he could see the rifle and said he would be right back. He returned shortly, laid the rifle on the counter and said he had loosened and moved the scope and rotated it, then said, "No charge". NO CHARGE???? You worked on my rifle without permission and adjusted my scope and didn't even ask me before you did something!! Under what circumstances is it ever okay to perform work on someone's firearm WITHOUT permission??!!! He cockily said it would shoot with no problem and it was right on. My groupings (from two days prior) before he messed with my rifle were spot on. Now I can't hit the target. When I confronted him and asked him what exactly he did to my rifle he said, "Who's asking??" I said I am! It's my rifle! This guy was so cavalier about it like he was doing me a favor. Favor?? Ridiculous and disrespectful to any gun owner. Don't go there, don't spend money there! You can bet your bottom dollar he would never have touched any man's rifle without permission and the disrespect he showed me was ridiculous. He is even the co-owner of the place! Stay away! After looking through some of the other reviews, it appears I am not the only woman who has had bad experiences in their store! read more

I just stopped in to see if they had any ideas for making a Marlin lever action smoother getting rounds in the chamber. An older guy(not Doug) said to bring it in and they could take a look. I didnt have it with me so I asked about 9mm ammo. they said no, but I could see some on the shelf. So I asked and was told I had to buy a gun to get any ammo. Well I have bought guns there before and told him so. He said it dont matter. So I walked off and he said, be sure to bring in that Marlin. I replied with "Not if I cant buy any ammo, probably wont be back at all". Too bad because Doug is really good to deal with. He just has an employee with an attitude. read more

Would have rated them one star, but one star was "Hated it" and I really don't hate anything, that's just a horrible word! Now, here's my experience in this shop. I went in there the first time a few days ago and they seemed friendly, but the co-owner, Ron jumped between customers like a "cat on a hot tin roof". I was okay with that on my first visit thinking that he was just trying to be a service to all customers in the shop, even though they really weren't all that busy. There were a couple of customers in there that I talked to and they suggested that Guncrafters are very willing to horse trade as well. I looked at and really liked a handgun they had that was a used piece, but looked brand new. They had a price on this gun at the same as one can purchase it brand new everywhere else, so naturally, I was thinking that they should be somewhat willing to negotiate on price. Now I fast forward to today, when I returned. I came in bringing two mint condition handguns that I was considering making a trade towards the used piece I saw and to potentially purchase a second one on top of this as well. Keep in mind their used piece was listed as $1,099.95. The two handguns I brought in were a S&W 5906 stainless steel 9mm that's had maximum one box of shells through it and a Colt Woodsman Match Target from the early 1970's still in it's original box and in mint condition with less than a box of shells through it and not a mark on it. If you know guns, the Colt Woodsman is a very collectable gun with the Match Target being the sought after model. These are regularly selling in this condition for $1,200 to $1,800 easily. Ron tells me that he would be able to sell my S&W 5906 for about $350 and the Match Target Colt for $800 and therefore said he would allow me $1,000 for both my Colt and S&W, meaning that I would have to put an additional $100 towards the over priced used handgun I was interested in. Lets see, some simple math, Ron said he'd give me $700 for my Colt claiming he would only be able to get $800 for, which in reality he would no doubt sell for about double that and offering me $300 for my S&W 5906, which he was a little bit closer, but would still easily be able to get $500 for, means that good old boy Ron tried a typical Used Car Salesman approach on me and that is how I would characterize Guncrafters, Ron & Doug, like Used Car Salesman. Shop there if you choose, and I would have done so today if they wouldn't have tried to totally screw me. I would have been okay with a "fair" deal, but fair wasn't how these guys operated at all so I packed up and walked out and see absolutely no reason to return! I hope some people read this and will beware of this shop! read more

I recently purchased a 9mm from here, it was one of the most beautiful pistols I had ever bought. But the preformance was terrible. I tried to return the pistol the next day or trade it in for something else. The staff there did not oblige, they were very rude and arrogant. I get it, they think they are so cool. They sell guns, knives and ammunition but now you just lost a customer. read more

Several months ago I took my Beretta to Guncrafters because I couldnt get it to fire. I walked into the store and was immediately greeted and offered cookies and candy. A very nice gentleman asked me if he could help me and I explained that my gun wasn't operating. He took it to his work area, came out within a couple of minutes and my gun was operating...and...NO CHARGE!!! I am fairly new to shooting and while I was there I was given awesome pointers and information on how to shoot. I left that day with my gun now operating, help wth my shooting techniques and a handful of large targets AND it didn't cost a penny!!! It doesn't get much better than that you might say?? Oh it does...Oh, it does. Recently I was on a mission to buy a gun (took 3 shopping days) and because of my wonderful experience at Guncrafters I went there first. They have a great selection and the prices are very competitive. I had a gun in mind so I got the price at Guncrafters and went on my merry way to find the best possible price. I went to most every gun store in town, pawn shops and big box. I honestly looked for 3 days, but boy was I knowledgeable about prices. On the 3rd day I headed back to where I started, Guncrafters and told the gentleman (owner) that I was tired of looking at guns and I was going to buy one today because it's my birthday. The price on the gun I wanted was already less expensive at Guncrafters than anywhere else in town so I knew without a doubt I was getting the best possible price. But wait...there's more...... the owners gave me an even better deal!!!!!! I saved some big bucks that day and had fun doing it. I truly enjoy everything about Guncrafters, the employees and owners are so helpful and they have a sense of humor which I love!! I was really dissapointed in guncrafters... I stopped in there and after waiting nearly 30 minutes feeling very ignored... I asked about one of there guns that was priced way higher then a big chainstore here in town. I said I believe in supporting the local shops and asked if they could match the other places price and I would buy theirs instead... The guy was rude and told me to go buy from the big store then. So I left and thats just what I did.. not only was the other store very friendly but they said that they actually hear that alot from the guys at guncrafters.. I was hugely unhappy and will never go back or recommend them to anyone. get a clue or just get out of business. they just lost a customer. read more

Fortunately they wrecked my two guns many years ago and I have mostly gotten over it. At least until today when I finally had my 1911 repaired by someone who is a master pistol smith. This is a great full service gun shop that stands behind the firearms and accessories they sell. The owner/gunsmith will spend as much time with you as you need (although he might need to stop every now and then to answer another customer's quick question--or a question from one of the other employees who might not be as knowledgeable on the subject). I've read all the negative reviews, and I must say I've never experienced any of the negativity. They don't shout and smile at you as you walk in the door ("Hi, Welcome to Great Clips!!"), but they also aren't there to pressure you like a car dealership. If you have a question or want some assistance, you just logically walk up to the long U-shaped glass counter--and they'll get to you. I have a hunch a lot of the negative reviews are just price shoppers looking to go in for some free advice and then run over to Sportsman's Warehouse or back home to the internet to make a purchase. Can a local gunsmith, hardware store, or other local small business compete with the Walmarts of the world for price. Of course not. But for me, extended customer service after a product is purchased is part of the value of the purchase price for me. I made the mistake once of purchasing a Lipsey's Ruger slab-side 22 MK-III from Sportsman's Warehouse. Guncrafters had only the Hunter version and, yes, it was a little more expensive even for that model. I went with Sportsman's Warehouse (because the price was too good to pass up and they had the Lipseys in stock). But guess what? There was a problem with the firearm. I took it back to Sportsman's Warehouse twice for help, and they flat out told me they weren't able to offer me any assistance (and that I needed to take it to a local gunsmith). I took the gun to Guncrafters, and the owner spent at least a 1/2 hour with me trying to disassemble the main spring which was way too tight (even for a new MK III). And he also knew where I purchased the firearm. While he was able to disassemble and assemble the firearm, it was beyond my ability. I offered to pay him for his time, but he refused--just invited me to become a regular customer. I ended up having to send it back to Ruger for factory warranty replacement of the whole main spring and frame (which Ruger did quickly and for free), but it solidified my commitment to supporting this local business. His prices are fair (below MSRP), but they're not deeply discounted. I highly recommend this shop. I give them 4+ solid starts, and don't give them 5, just because they really could do a better job of greeting customers as they come in--a lot of first time firearm purchasers are a little tentative and uncomfortable (their school teachers, the media, and politicians have nearly convinced them that buying a gun might be illegal or at least improper). I also just give them 4 stars, because GunCrafters really could do a better job of greeting and welcoming customers who walk in. Support your local Gunsmith!! read more
