We loved the peaceful setting, the comfortable beds, and the beautiful mountain views from both the windows and the front porch. Breakfast was excellent and well worth the price. We tried the Palmer Farmers Omelet, Solstice Scramble, Breakfast Burrito, Halibut Benedict, and Sheep Mountain Pancakes. Everything was good, but the standouts were the Solstice Scramble and the Halibut Benedict. The breakfast potatoes were crispy and flavorful. The only downside was that their espresso machine was down, and the drip coffee was just okay. Dinner was decent but felt a bit overpriced. We had the smoked salmon spread, Olympia halibut cakes, meatloaf, grilled halibut, grilled salmon, and roast chicken. Everything was cooked well, just not particularly memorable. Service was friendly and attentive, and we never waited long to be seated for dinner.

It's very imposing yet inviting, and has wonderful mountain views As we had decided that our normal place to eat in Glennallan is no longer "on the menu" so to speak, we decided to try Sheep Mountain Lodge, on the way home from Valdez. It's a beautifully situated Lodge, nestling in the mountains. There's cabins too, and some RV sites. It looks like somewhere I'd love to stay to be honest. The main building where you go for dinner is pretty classy, i have to say, and fortunately, it's not crammed with tons of stuff on the walls. Less is more, in my opinion. Our server seated us at the far end away from the bar, and we had a good view of the mountains. I honestly wasn't feeling super hungry, so i decided to go for a couple of appetizers. I ordered the Crab, Spinach, and Artichoke dip with bread, and the Fry Basket. Blake got a Burger entree. I was presented with a medium skillet of dip, and eight pieces of bread, and an enormous tray/basket of fries. I ordered appetizers, as I thought they'd be smaller bites but these were enormous, and i admit to feeling somewhat daunted by the amount of food. The Dip was beautifully creamy, and the bread nicely toasted. Very moreish. Blake says I'm gonna get gout. The fries were wonderfully crispy. I was putting them between the slices of bread (What us English call a "chip butty") and smearing crab, spinach, artichoke dip all over it. I was pretty disgusting, i admit it. But the meager amount that i was able to eat, i did enjoy it. This would easily feed 2 people. I don;t know about the rest of the appetizers, but these 2 are definitely sharing plates - so a word to the wise. His Burger entree wasn't nearly so large as my 2 appetizers lol. But anyway, I would definitely come back, and in hindsight, I'd order differently than i did this time, because we had an enormous amount of food, and not an enormous amount of appetite. Warning this will be a long post…read more.. One word to describe this place is amazing. Our travel agent from Homer booked us Matsukana Lodge because we needed a stop between the long drive from Valdez to Seward. I looked at the website and was impressed by the best site of any B&B we looked at for the whole state (after complimenting Brenda on her website she said her niece who is a Web designer helped her). When we pulled in right after the 100 mile marker we were greeted by the majestic lodge. We were welcomed in by all their dogs which were super friendly and shown to the Glacier Room. The pictures don't do the place justice, the room was huge and beautifully decorated and appointed. We were given complimentary reusable aluminum bottles as well as luggage tags. The private bathroom was huge with a whirlpool bath and a separate shower. It was easily nicer than a $300+ boutique hotel you would get back in California. Not only was our room spectacular, we were told there was a mini gym and pool table in the garage. As we were on vacation I chose not to partake in the gym but the pool table was in an awesome game room above the garage. I absolutely loved the nice touch of Monopoly cards painted into the walls. The tour didn't end their, we were also shown the hot tub with majestic views of the private lake and surrounding mountains. Additionally there was a pool house with a kayak you could use on the lake. Basically I will close by saying Matsukana Lodge is a mini 5-star resort in the middle of rural Alaska. It will blow your mind and make you disappointed at any other B&B you ever go to again. I don't think I'll ever be able to top my one night stay here and look forward to coming back again to stay longer! Pro tip: the 2 downstairs rooms have more privacy but we loved the layout of the Glacier Room. You can't go wrong with any room.

I paid $169 per night and the Sheraton in anchorage was also the same rate. Pretty good considering it saved me time for my hike and breakfast was included. Quality- This lodge has a lot of character and personality of the owner. Lots of color and some pretty cool amenities: private bathrooms, jacuzzi and walking access to a nearby river. Quantity- HUGE ROOMS. Atmosphere- very cute. Also three dogs running around provides additional love. I also saw a moose in the backyard. Staff- The ladies are great. They are very warm and did anything they could to accommodate. For instance, I got in super late and they kept the light on for me to make everything easy for when I arrived. If you want to be outdoors in Alaska, but not camp, this is the place. Note: the lodge is located between mile marker 100 and 101.

Their pizza are creative and awesome. It must be the top three places for me wrt pizza. Thai me up is awesome. Our favorite. Then two italien sausage ones are awesome too. Cheesy ones are awesome. You know, we have 4 people and dined there for two nights. And they allow to order mix match pizza, i think we cover the whole menu almost. And everything is awesome! Their local brewed beer is great! Daily soup is warming me up and awesome. We also ordered fries. Me and another girl are big fries fan, and yay they have good fries too. The place is like a wooden cabin and have all the cute deco, spacious, bright and lovely. Definitely love it! And great to visit.

The hostess/owner of the business was on site and assisted greatly with some basic needs I forgot back at home, such as plates and utensils for the grill. They have two gas grills on site as well as a charcoal grill next to each cabin. They have a covered pavilion with an indoor firepit. Wood is for sale for $8. Each cabin is equipped with a coffee maker, a very small TV, and the lodge also offers complimentary K-cups and DVDs for rent. I cannot speak for the RV experience, but this is a great place to stay if you're on your way to or from Anchorage, or if you just want to get away for the weekend. Highly recommended.
