I took the Conceal Carry License classes with Sue Pate and Jerry Martin. Both classes were exceptional. The first class addresses pistols and safety. Sue took time and addressed the issues and answered all question. Her knowledge and skill on the firing range were outstanding. The second class, taught by Jerry Martin, addressed the law and real life possibilities. Jerry took the time to answer any and all questions. Jonathan Stahl made training FOID and Concealed Carry and even the shooting range the most informative, the most relaxed and he remained patient and understanding to all those that were involved. A newbie like me, felt confident and secure with Jonathon Stahls professional and educational knowledge. I needed the to take the Illinois Concealed Carry Course to upgrade my FOID. Gurnee Pistol Academy was my first choice. They teach at my favorite range, Five Star, so I had no qualms over quality of instruction. John has a great personality who is able to keep attention on the driest parts of the class. Then Sue, who qualified me on the range, is extremely knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable with the exam which I 'banged' off in quick time with a near perfect score. My instructor was Sue. She was very professional, informative, and positive. She uses a lot of positive reinforcement so you feel very comfortable with the training being administered. Very knowledgeable, not afraid of questions, and will get you an answer for any question you have. I would highly recommend anybody to visit Sue, when learning and for a refresher class. Highly recommended! read more

Jerry Martin is the best conceal carry educator out there. He knows more about gun laws and safety than anyone I have ever come across. Most people don't want to sit in a classroom for 8 hours at a time, I've sat in several of his and not once did I ever look at my watch to see when the class was ending. Very interactive, real life situations, videos on what not to do and vice versa, nothing like his classes out there. You are involved from the get go and the topics are awesome. His partner Sue is one of the best as well. Amazing range knowedge, an expert at teaching how to shoot, stance, holding firearm, and most important, safety. Great sense of humor and has a smile on her face always. There is no better teacher to learn how to shoot, Sue is the best. I highly recommend this tandem duo. We as Americans need to be as safe as possible and you can't go wrong with these two. Classes fill up quick so don't wait! read more

Great time with great instructors. I have a lot of friends with firearms and always felt a little uneasy using them. The instructors make sure you understand the way a firearm works, the laws around them, and how to maintain and buy one. They even called before the class started to see exactly what I wanted to get from the class. It felt like I had a private tutor teaching me everything I need and wanted to know. Also no one tried to force me into buying anything. They also brought multiple types of handguns so we could try each one out and see what works best. I highly recommend this place! read more

For anyone that is interested in not only obtaining there CCL but would also like to receive instruction on proper and safe handling of a weapon I would definitely recommend this class. Jerry, Sue and Mike ensure that not only can you be safe with a concealed weapon but also confident and proficient. They even make sure that you understand what your legal responsibilities are and what options you have to protect yourself legally in the event you have to use your weapon. They are also great coaches so regardless of to your level of experience they will make you comfortable. read more

Needed to take a 3 hour refresher course to renew my Concealed Carry License and wanted to do it before the end of 2018. I was not sure which course to take nor where I should take it so I did some research and found out that the head instructor was Jerry Martin - a Viet Nam Marine veteran. I also am a Marine Viet Nam veteran (1964 thru 1965) but I needed to know more about the course, the instructor etc. I have been shooting all of my life - before, during my time in the Marine Corps and for the last 53 years after Viet Nam so I know a little bit about guns and shooting etc. but I needed to check him out to make sure he was not a phony. I also dreaded the legalese of this course because the last time I took it - it was BORING and I was falling asleep in class. Not so with this class - Jerry made it very interesting, informative and used personal examples to accentuate the aspects of the course we are required to take. Worked out well and made me understand the law and the reasons for the different parts of the law. After the first of the year, I am going to encourage my wife to take his beginner shooting course and/or the pepper spray course. Look at their course schedule and pick what you need. You will enjoy it and you will not be sorry you chose them. read more

I just took the NRA Phase 1 and the CCL class and I am very impressed. Jerry, Sue and Dave went above and beyond the basic requirements to make sure I understood all the concepts and responsibilities. The class was very professional, organized and the materials provided were excellent. They brought the right amount of seriousness to the topics while also making the learning fun. Jerry Martin has worked in the Training Industry all his adult life. As a ski instructor, SCUBA instructor, & flight instructor. He received his firearms training as a combat U.S. Marine. Dave Barrow is a retired judge, attorney, deputy sheriff and town constable. He is extremely capable of helping our students understand the legal aspects. Sue Pate grew up in a law enforcement family. Her Dad was Chief of Police, and Mom was a Reserve Sheriff Deputy. She also enjoys photography and works in horticulture industry. Sue is also the main contact for the personal training .

My ignorance made me write the review what i didnt knw that i knw now is that Illinois has been over loaded with new applications and that for that reason its been a delay on reviewing applications. Not only is it time consuming but Illinois just don't have the man power to keep up with all the new applications. So the process can take a long time! Also with my application i switched addresses. When filling your conceal everything must match if not it will be rejected and sent back . Julio immediately reached out to me and he he took ownership and made my application a main priority. When new information came about he wld inform me and he wld reach out. I will not say the process was short . It was extremely long and u are kept in limbo with the state.. But i have my conceal to carry To present day!! Julio worked to find HARD to find my processing error the state never told me why my application was rejected... It was Julio that found the error and made the necessary corrections.. After i got my License Julio assisted me to apply for the remaining states ... I feel bad that i went to social media and slander this buissnes on my ignorance. I just hope as others seek this place and review my commentary that people will see its not about what happen but what was done in the service recovery that makes the real difference!. I was new to firearms in general but knew I wanted to eventually get my IL Concealed Carry license. Luckily I found Gurnee Pistol Academy. I have been extremely impressed with all of the training I received as well as with the three instructors Jerry, Sue & Dave. Their combined real world experience, knowledge and training make them excellent instructors. In addition, the training they provide make their students well prepared to safely handle firearms, understand legalities of firearm ownership as well as understanding proper concealed carry. During the process of signing up for the classes I had several questions. The instructors communication was excellent and they were always available via email or phone and provided quick responses. I love the logistics they have as well for the class, it is in a very convenient location (Gurnee Mills Mall), with the range certification being just down the way at the Bass Pro Shop gun range (also at Gurnee Mills Mall). I have now taken my IL Concealed Carry 16 hour training as well as my Utah Conceal Carry class with Gurnee Pistol Academy. I highly recommend the Gurnee Pistol Academy to anyone from beginners to experienced shooters looking to obtain their concealed carry license. read more

If you want a personal down home style of teaching with a strong practical approach, and teachers that have the background and know how to make you into a much more informed firearms owner and an improved shooter this is the right people to take classes from. Your immediately comfortable in class which leads to much better absorption of the topics and lessons. The lessons are well laid out and the atmosphere is one that condones an informative and fun atmosphere. The subject matter is taken seriously and you will not be disappointed. There is also range time associated with the class which was very good. I give the instructors an even higher rating than A+ if there was such a thing! read more

Took both of the CCL classes, the instructors were friendly and knowledgable. They were not the Rambo wannabes that I had in other classes. They presented a lot of material in each class and found ways to hold our attention through it all. We even had a Judge that helped write the laws as a guest speaker. We were taught how to safely and legally carry a firearm, how to avoid needing to use a firearm, how to accurately use a firearm. We learned how to identify threats and how to avoid or minimize them. If you are thinking about taking on the responsibility of concealed carry this is the place to learn. read more

Gurnee pistol academy has to be one of the best out there! I went in knowing absolutely nothing and now I'm a regular at the range and know all my laws and information. My daughter, Sara, and myself attended to gain our ILL CCL. The class was very informative, well run and downright fun. We both achieved our NRA Pistol certificates, qualified by shooting live ammo and left with our ILL CCL completion certificates. we also experienced ILAZER training which was very helpful as well. I took my 16-hour course with GPA a few weeks ago. The instructors were very knowledgeable and spent time with each student to make sure the basics were down. The range was in the same mall and was very clean and did not smell of gun smoke. A free NRA hat at the end of the course was icing on the cake. read more
