I was in town helping plan next August's senior games and needed dinner. Can't say I'll be recommending this restaurant to the 800 people coming to town based on the $35 I wasted here. I got a steak sandwich. How do you mess up a steak sandwich? Well one way is to pour so much salt on it that it becomes almost inedible. What the heck was the cook thinking? Seemed like a decent cut of meat, but ruined by the cook. House salad consisted of lettuce and a few chopped carrots. Wow. French fries were barely acceptable. Four reviews posted here in ten years. Probably that's a hint on the quality right there. But for the younger folks at the bar watching the hockey, I was the only customer having dinner at 6:30pm on a Monday. Another hint. read more

This establishment is due for an updated review. That said, yesterday I had supper here and found the place overall an enjoyable event. I had a couple of Medicine Hat Brewing Company "Blood Orange" draft beers and a couple of shots of Jameson's Irish whiskeys. I was going to order the Neptune steak but was warned against it unless I liked a lot of sauce. I was recommended to have the Peppercorn steak instead. The steak was a 10oz hand cut steak with baked potato and 3 stems of Broccoli. Now I will say this right away I've had better steaks but also, i've had worse. The real down side was the amount of peppercorns in the sauce that were also uncracked. The peppercorns added nothing to the sauce but instead were a unpleasant distraction to the meal. The processed bacon bits for the potato was unpleasant as well. The restaurant overall was warm and the staff were very friendly. Important too was the beer was cold. Did someone say steak? I had no idea where to eat in Brooks until I saw the large lit up sign that read "Steak & Pizza". How could I resist? I wasn't disappointed in the steak either. I grabbed the "mushroom steak" which, yeah you guessed it, comes topped with a bunch of fried mushrooms. My steak was cooked pretty well and the mushrooms were delicious but I had a problem with the sides. To start I was provided a tiny salad that could barely be considered anything more than a "bite". The vegetables I were provided was actually only corn without anything added to it. I also chose to have the baked potato which was undercooked and served with tiny amounts of the toppings that you would expect (with the exception of green onions which were not provided). Over all, if I really wanted a steak I'd still grab another one but I would know what to expect of the sides and maybe try the soup or something. The service I received was great but the lounge wasn't too busy. I hear their pizza is really good, so I'm sure I'll be back and try that later. read more

Took the family to eat at Gus' and we had a decent meal. Service is good - fast and friendly. The restaurant is one side of a pub / restaurant combo, and the menu reflects that. The kids had burgers - they were pretty good burgers with enough toppings to make for a happy, sloppy meal. My wife had the ribs - tender with a decent barbecue sauce. I tried a steak, which tasted good but was horribly overcooked. The food here is okay, but stick to the pub food, as the other side of the menu isn't as good. read more

Lounge service is usually really good, They make a good Caesar, Best pizza in town IMO.

Anyone who knows Gus' knows ya gotta do Lounge side for true experience. Great food. Great staff. Awesome regulars!

This place is a HUGE disappointment. I have never written a bad review in my life, but this one takes the cake. The restaurant itself is passable (the food is WAY overpriced for what you get, and the place is mediocre, reminiscent of a hole-in-the-wall diner), it was the service that was beyond awful. I would never return in a million years. We were there for dinner on a Saturday night while driving through Brooks, and the restaurant was about 90% empty (so I know the poor service wasn't due to a lack of staff or dinner rush). The girl who served us was either completely untrained, or completely oblivious to the do-s and don't-s of the restaurant industry, or the way she acted was simply common practice at this restaurant. My friend ordered the "Steak Guzone" and was asked what kind of potato she wanted with it, then was given a few options. All sounded fine and normal. I ordered a Guzone as well, except mine was the Chicken Cordon Bleu. The first strange thing was that I was asked if I wanted a soup or salad. My friend was only asked about the potato side. You would think we would get the same options as our meals was exactly the same but with different fillings. That was the first odd thing. Then my salad came, a sad looking, barely palatable out-of-the-Safeway-bag type with some sad dressing on the side. My friend was delivered a surprise Caesar salad that wasn't even mentioned. Then our meals came - our plates looked like two completely different meals.....because they WERE! My friend's meal was fine, the "Guzone" was on a plate by itself and a separate plate of fries arrived with it. My meal was an actual Chicken Cordon Blue meal.... I was slightly confused by my plate and then said to the server that I had ordered the Guzone, not the main course of the same name. She had repeated my order when I placed it so I know she heard me. The server looked confused and just said, "oh.", while still pushing the plate in front of me. No "I'm sorry", no "I'll take it back", no "we will give it to you at the same price as the dish you had ordered" which was about $6 less. Not wanting to wait another 45 minutes as we were tired and still had to get to Calgary by nightfall, I took the meal and said it was fine. I was annoyed but tried to be nice about it. The food was over-salted, tasted freezer burnt and was of very poor quality - I would've gotten a better meal at a Wendy's. My meal honestly looked like slop. The menu prices were ridiculous to start with. I cannot believe food like this would be charged at that rate, my meal was worth perhaps $5 as it was completely unappetizing and looked like a pile of you-know-what. When we were done our meals, a dessert was not even mentioned by the server. The bill was sort of just thrown at the table as she passed us. When our bill came, we saw that they charged my meal at a full price (seriously, even an apology about the mistake would've been nice!) which was quite a bit higher than what I had actually ordered. Not worth it in the slightest. They also charged us $4.00 extra for that side of potato that apparently didn't come with my friend's dinner but was presented as if it was! This is unacceptable. If the side was extra, it should've been mentioned, not just given as something that normally comes with the meal. The menu did not clarify any of this either. Does this restaurant encourage up-sell without telling the patrons that they will be paying extra?! Ridiculous. I always tip. And I tip well because I believe that (most) people in the service and restaurant industry work very hard and usually deal with jerk customers. I've been on that side of the fence before. Needless to say, a tip was out of the question here. I was extremely upset when we left. Never again. That was purely shameful. read more

Third times the charm. We tried two other restaurants on Monday February 17, 2014 based on the reviews before we decided on this restaurant but they were both closed.??? When we walked into Gus's it was completely empty and we thought we had hit another lost cause. We were pleasantly surprised however. The food was hot and delicious. Prices were reasonable. My husband had the barbecue burger and he said it was homemade and delicious. I had the Philly Swiss and it was one of the best I have ever had. Perfect roast beef, sliced thin and piled high on a fresh bun. Perfect au jus. Delicious gravy. A lemon slice in my water which is always appreciated. French fries were not homemade but they were cooked perfect and delicious. read more
