Stopped here for lunch after coming back from camping on Malcolm Island. We had been to Gus's on our last camping trip to Bere Point two years prior and remembered it as being pretty good, so after getting off the 11am ferry from Sointula this morning, heading to Gus's again was an easy call. We were seated right away; the place was mostly empty and the waitress told us to sit wherever we liked. We chose a booth with a window view. First thing I noticed was the overpowering smell of bleach. Ok, I get how lots of people just can't let go of the ongoing covid hysteria, but most other restaurants we've been to use less off-putting cleansers to wipe down tables. Really, how are you expected to enjoy your food after being clobbered as soon as you sit down with a smell that reminds you of toilet bowl cleaner? That aside, we got menus pretty promptly; the service overall was okay (but not great). Since my wife had looked at the menu online while we were on the ferry, we already had a pretty good idea what we wanted: I ordered their "Signature" burger, my wife tried the halibut fish and chips. The food arrived in reasonable time; as I mentioned, the place wasn't busy. The good news first! My wife thoroughly enjoyed her fish and chips. A large piece of halibut, lightly breaded, done to perfection. My burger, on the other hand, well, I'd rate it a solid 2.5. After the second bite, I wished I had ordered something else. The meat was greasy. Rather than using lean or even extra lean ground beef, their burgers are made with regular fatty ground beef. Fat grease literally dripped from my burger as I was eating, making a small puddle on my plate. Yuck! The bun was pathetic. You know, the ultra cheap white bread hamburger buns you buy for $2.00/dozen at Safeway. Not even toasted. Slightly stale. The bottom half essentially dissolved before I was even halfway through, with the fatty grease and the too thick layer of relish. Since we had been eating really healthy during our camping trip, I decided on fries with the burger rather than soup or salad. A generous serving was offered, but looked like frozen fries out of a bag rather than made in the kitchen (I make my own fries, so can usually spot the factory cut potatoes). But overall they were good, though a touch on the oily side. I guess, on balance, for pub fare in a small town, Gus's is a reasonable option. But if we were to lunch there again, I definitely would think twice about ordering another burger. read more

I stopped in Port McNeill, and had a terrible experience at Gus's. The restaurant was full, and seated in seats that weren't preferred hoping we could sit elsewhere. I asked the server if I could move into one of the empty booth seats and she rudely told me that I had to stay in my seat. But not just that, I waited over an hour for my food. But if I'm being honest the food was good, it's just not worth waiting an hour at the high price it's at and when the server presented themselves as rude. read more

Worst service ever!! We entered the restaurant and sat down. We watched as a handful of parties entered over the next 10-15 minutes and were given menus before us. Finally when the waitress handed menus to a group that had just sat down right next to us I finally asked for a menu. When I complained about the wait she said "I didn't see you." Are you kidding? She just handed menus to the table immediately next to us!! We waited, waited, and waited for our food. After an hour I pointed out that we had been waiting an hour. She responded that she couldn't control the kitchen. When I pointed out that if she had given us menus and taken our order in time we would have been served before the handful of parties that came in after us she rolled her eyes. She could care less! My wife needed a condiment. Waitress was nowhere to be found for a very long time. Finally my wife got up and asked another waitress and got what she needed immediately! As mentioned in a previous review she sat down with friends at a table next to us and chatted with them rather than taking care of her customers! I would say the food and drink were good! However, the management of the Pub is awful. We were a reservation for 14. The kitchen could not handle our orders. We waited 1 hour and 15 minutes for our food. During that time the server did not update us until we started asking. After an hour one guest asked if the server could bring us some chips and salsa. The server said they don't have those but then pointed to a guest who had a starter that had chips. The server actually pointed out that we could ask that guest for some chips. Clearly the server was under pressure. If the kitchen can't handle a reservation of 14 then DO NOT accept the reservation! read more

I like stopping in to local pubs because they usually give me a minute to catch my breath, while, I just sit and collect my thoughts for awhile. That was not the case, here. Apparently, there are still closedminded people here in Canada :( I was trying to have a quiet moment by myself at a cafe and a red-headded waitperson was talking about how another server about how she shouldn't post photos of her little nephew on FB with painted fingernails because he might turn out gay, inferring that showing any photos. of gay youth would be an embarassment. My brother is gay and has had to work VERY HARD to gain acceptance & he's a very normal, not overly effeminette seeming guy. He works in Construction and most people probably never know, unless he talks about it. This conversation between her and the owner's daughter (who seemed supportive but did not refute the older woman's statement) made me ANGRY!!! For a country that has accepted gay marriage for nearly 10 years, I am surprised to find such homophobic embarrassment, today! For a place that specializes in hospitality, especially such a SMALL space, you'd think they would be cautious about offending customers as they would likely be repeat customers. Port McNeill is the Big City in these parts and with such a great location right off the docks, Gus' has the potential to serve a majority of those who walk ashore! Undortunately, I won't be one of those & will encourage my friends and family to avoid this place, too. read more

If you're needing a keto meal this is the place for you. They load their Caesar salad up with more bacon than I have ever had in a salad and it was really satisfying. I complimented this with what were the best wings I have ever had. They're baked then fried to make them crispy without breading. After reading the reviews I was afraid to eat here. My friend and I had one night in Port McNeil before we went to Telegraph Cove and we wanted a decent meal. This place had 2 stars, but we walked around to a few other places and peaked in the window and they looked empty. Gus's Pub has a decent number of people in there so we decided to try it. It's a pub- so I had the fried halibut and chips and my friend had a halibut burger. We both had beers. My meal was delicious - couldn't have asked for a better fish and chips meal and my friend agreed. We were confused by the ratings. Our waitress was friendly and attentive We were pleasantly surprised I knew I had to do a rating of this place to make up for the other bad reviews Hopefully people give it a try! read more

I come here each summer and I always head for Gus' Restaurant. This year we went 3 times. Once in July. Two times in August. First time, lunch, just okay. I thought probably just the Monday cook. Second time, dinner, very good with charming and attentive waitress. It was the Gus' that I have come to know and love. Third time, dinner and it was the pits. The absolute worst. The sign said the dinner special was CRISPY Chicken Burger with guacamole. We asked the waitress, What is CRISPY? She said "breaded" and yes, crispy. Hamburgers that arrived were not breaded and not in any way crispy. We complained. My wife did anyway. I was starving. Waitress said sorry. We will fix that. Just a few minutes. It was at least half an hour before my wife's crispy chicken burger showed up. In the meantime, I had of course eaten my dinner. And I saw same waitress deliver 2 or 3 more NOT CRISPY CHICKEN BURGERS to other patrons. I do not know if they were disappointed, or if they complained. We left more than disappointed. And, on the way out, I noticed that the sign listing that night's specials still said that the special dinner was a CRISPY CHICKEN BURGER with guacamole. The only dubious review on here is yours! You have one review and your name is Sloth! Next time I suggest you grab a '2 Liter' and head down the park, you'll have a much better time! Myself and my wife and sometimes a friend go in usually every UFC fight night and we usually always end up with the waitress Dana. Regardless of how busy it is in there once we get one drink, we are ignored. She will take care of other people or sit at the table with friends. Never get checked on to see how we are doin or how our drinks are and she will walk right by our table with out even a look. I find it really rube when the customer has to call out to a waitress when they are walking right by or we would have to get up and chase her down. I would prefer to give no stars but i cant. Even if its not a fight night theres no service. Pretty much what it comes down to is if your not friends with the staff you will be sitting for nothing. read more

We are local Port McNeillers and not alcoholics (pointed at you Sloth) and we enjoy our local pub. It is a place to socialize and have some great food....We have nothing bad to say, just that some people should not generalize and comment on things that they know nothing about. A clean pub with good burgers, friendly staff and flat screen TVs for sporting events. Gus's pub is owned and run by Gus who can occasionally be seen behind the bar. Mostly standard pub food is of good quality and comes quickly when they aren't busy. On the down side, service can be spotty, glasses were not clean the most recent time I went and the Thai Wrap has waaaaay too much sauce. read more

On a recent trip to Vancouver Island we had wonderful halibut burgers at Gus's Pub. Terrific, BUT I asked for a little mayonnaise (to add to my catsup for my fries). Later when we glanced at the bill I realized that they added $1.50 for the mayonnaise! In addition to 2 $17.00 burgers - they charged me for a little mayo. Really Gus's? read more
