Mike Hamner, the owner of H & H Painting provided a lot of bravado before I hired him. He said he costs more because he does such a good job. He was hired to paint/stain my house and deck. The powerwashing that was done was mediocre. I had sanded a spot on the deck a couple of days before they powerwashed and the sanding muck was still there when they finished. So were cobwebs in areas that should have been powerwashed. When I questioned him about it, he became defensive and said "I did it myself, it was done!" They actually did a good job taping. They sprayed the house and it looked fine. They ran out of paint though and had to purchase more than anticipated. Like any contractor, if they are making money, things are fine and they will do a good job. But, since Mike had to buy extra paint, it seemed like he started cutting corners. The trim around the windows is a different color. I noticed that they were only painting the front, not the sides of the trim boards. When I asked Mike about it, he said that the sides had not been painted before and that it wasn't in the contract. Since I had actually painted the trim myself, and since I had photographs of the boards which showed that the sides were painted the different color, he conceded and painted the sides of the trim boards - but only around the windows and door. There was some trim at the corners of the house where he refused to paint the sides of the boards to match the front of the boards. Mike and his crew painted most of the deck flooring using rollers. They did not use enough pressure on the rollers presumably to decrease the amount of paint that he had to use (since he had run out of paint AGAIN!) and the imprint of the rollers was on the boards. When I pointed that out to Mike, he said "that is called stipple and it is due to the irregularity of your boards". When I pointed out to him that on the portions where they used a brush, there was no stipple, he had no comment. The stippling that was the final product was due to poor technique and had nothing to do with the boards.
If all you want is for them to spray paint onto your house, he did an adequate job. I feel like Mike took advantage of me since I did not try to argue with him when he made ludicrous claims about why he was doing such a poor job of staining the deck flooring and then would get defensive and somewhat hostile when challenged. read more
