BAD BILLING PRACTICE!!! There is only one side to this story. Let me begin. I went to see Dr. Jelinek for TMJ pain, which is covered by my insurance BCBS, and it was verified that he is in network. It was understood by the office that my treatment would be covered by insurance when using the proper codes for claims. Imagine my surprise when I received a massive bill because the claim was DENIED. To get to the bottom of this, I had BCBS do a 3 way call with Patricia from billing to ensure their office adhered to proper protocol (using proper coding and timely submission). The wonderful BCBS insurance rep walked her through on what codes to use. Despite this, Patricia still submitted the wrong codes (not even TMJ codes, but instead for snoring- a problem I do not have). This obviously resulted in the claims getting denied, leaving me responsible for the full balance. This is best case careless and worst case, fraudulent. She didn't have the decency to inform me that the claims were denied and instead sent the bill straight to a collections agency. Imagine my surprise when I received a notice from COLLECTIONS!! Of course the letter from collections is when I learned something was clearly going wrong. I reached out to BCBS and I called Patricia immediately and she claimed she sent a bill 7 times to my confirmed home address, but I never received any bills. I spent hours on the phone with BCBS trying to figure out what went wrong only to learn that ALL the fault was on the office's end. If Patricia had filed the codes correctly like she was told, I wouldn't be hung with a full bill. Collections was actually lovely, and gave me time to figure things out. In the midst of this, I had one appointment with Dr. Jelinek and during that appointment, he rudely tried to get me to pay the bill in full, complaining he hasn't gotten paid in months and he has to pay his rent and staff. I told him the new corrected claims haven't finished processing and he needs to wait for that to go through. He has a contract with BCBS in which he has to respect the agreed rate and write off the rest, but instead he balance billed me (charging a patient more than the allowed amount) hoping to get paid in full, which is illegal in the state of VA. Balance billing is unethical. He eventually got paid by insurance and I was ready to move forward with treatment. At my next appointment, he told me he will no longer deal with insurance and I would be responsible for paying each visit in full. He said dealing with insurance is a waste of his time, even though I was the one doing all the work. He told me he is not a bank and cannot wait months to get paid as he has to pay his staff. I had to remind him that the reason was Patricia and her negligence with the codes. He said he did not want to talk about it. I wish someone had told me of his new payment policy before the appointment because I would have canceled. He waited for me to arrive to tell me this, wasting both his time and mine. He has zero regards for his patients, scamming them hoping to get maximum payment. Patricia is a nightmare to work with, an absolute royal pain- so rude even the insurance rep was shocked the way she spoke to her and Dr. Jelinek is just outright unprofessional. Lastly, the office could use an update as the decor is stuck in the 1970's. read more

His office is full of nice and very helpful staff and he himself has proven to be a very capable doctor at resolving cavities, performing periodic cleanings, and explaining all the while what's going on and what he reccomends. Based on referrals, I sought treatment for my sleep apnea from Dr. Jelinek, Jr., DDS. Sleep apnea is a common disorder that results in the involuntary cessation of breath that occurs while someone is sleeping. I had severe sleep apnea and after several years of unsuccessful results from a CPAP machine, I was interested in trying an oral appliance. An oral appliance is a custom-fabricated dental device that moves the lower jaw into a forward position, increasing space in the airway. The extra space that is created prevents the airway from collapsing, which can help to reduce sleep apnea. Without treatment, sleep apnea can result in high blood pressure, which can damage the walls of the carotid arteries and increase the risk of stroke. I elected to seek treatment from Dr. Jelinek because he is one of only five dentists in the Washington DC Metro area who is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine. He is especially qualified and experienced in treating patients with sleep apnea who are CPAP intolerant. My experience thus far has been OUTSTANDING! Dr. Jelinek and his entire staff are extremely professional, courteous and caring. Every step of the process in obtaining an oral appliance was explained in detail with measurement procedures performed in expert fashion. I have been using an oral appliance for approximately one month. The results were immediate and life changing. I now sleep throughout the entire night, not waking up 3 or 4 times like I was prior to my using an appliance. I am now able to reach such a deep sleep that I experience incredible dreams, compared to no memory of dreaming when I was previously waking up 3 or 4 times a night. I would rate my experience and results from Dr. Jelinek and his superb staff as an A+. I am very pleased and deeply appreciative with my improved ability to sleep through the night. I now look forward to an evening's sleep where my prior sleep experience was a constant battle to fall asleep. I sincerely thank and am very grateful to Dr. Jelinek and his entire crew for their dedication to improving the lives of patients through the use of an appliance that provides restorative sleep. read more

Dr. Jelinek and his dental hygienists as well as staff are as good as it gets. I happened to come across their office through an online special that they ran, and I immediately knew I made the right decision with my choice of dentist in the Northern Virginia area. You are welcomed by a wonderful staff, and a calm atmosphere (that actually won awards for its interior decoration!). The set up brings ease it to clients in what can be an otherwise tense environment for some people. I was surprised to actually find my dental hygienist from Chicago, Nicole working there. Nicole brings such positive energy and love to the office and her patients, she's the best, I hope everyone gets an opportunity to be around her at some point during one of their visits. My husband has severe sleep apnea and struggled getting used to a CPAP machine. He heard about Dr. Jelinek's customized oral device to treat sleep apnea as an alternative to using a CPAP machine and immediately sought treatment. The oral device he is using is specific to his jaw and basically keeps his jaw in place while he is sleeping. He's been using the oral device for about 3 months now and the results are amazing! His snoring is almost non-existent. He wakes up energized every morning and no longer requires daily naps. My quality of life has also improved because I can sleep peacefully now. Everyone was pleasant and helpful. But I cannot honestly recommend this dentist to my family and friends. I had this uneasy feeling from the moment I entered the office the first time. The waiting room felt to me more like that of a law or investment firm's than that of a dentist's. Nice wood paneling. Delicious chocolate cookies (cookies, at the dentist, really??? At least I hope they were sugarless.) And I was provided with a very professional-looking packet of what seemed to me to be marketing and promotional material. I generally felt that I was the object of a marketing campaign -- that I had to be on my guard to avoid being taken advantage of. For example, this dentist recommended treatments that few if any other dentist that I've ever had, before and after I left this practice, have recommended. In fact, when I asked my periodontist about the recommendation, she advised against it. When I took no action to schedule the procedure, I actually received a follow-up call from this office several months later asking when I wanted to schedule it -- it really felt to me like a marketing call. Another example -- when I needed to borrow a device he has to monitor an oral situation at home, he wanted to charge me $300. A previous dentist loaned me the exact same device without any charge. I would have been OK with a nominal charge, but how is that one dentist can charge zero and this dentist wants $300 for a couple day loaner? I could have rented a $25,000 auto from Hertz for substantially less money! This added to my impression that I was first a source of revenue and then only second a patient. That motivated me to go and compare prices to those my wife was getting at another practice (she had abandoned this practice sooner than I had) and to another dentist and to the averages I was able to find in my area. I found that this practices' prices were, for just about all procedure codes that I could find comparison info for, materially higher. I lost confidence in the dentist b/c the practice felt to me more like a business and less like a practice. I found myself regularly wondering when the dentist made a recommendation whether it was primarily for my benefit or was it part of an upsell strategy and for his benefit. So, I decided this practice was not for me, and I am much happier now with my new dentist. read more

I have been a patient of Dr. Jelinek's for over 10 years, and he is wonderful! I am a HUGE needle-phobe, and the first time he had to give me novacaine he practically had to scrape me off of the ceiling! Dr. J. was very patient and a thorough professional. Thanks to him, i can now endure something that terrified me for decades. He is extremely proactive when it comes to preventative dental care, but I have never felt like I was being "up-sold" while in the chair. The one negative is the fact that while he will submit your dental insurance paperwork, you have to pay upfront and then wait for your insurance company to reimburse you. It's a pain, but I completely understand why he does it this way. read more

I moved to Fairfax last November and needed to find a new dentist. I looked up local dentists and lucked out with choosing Dr. Jelinek's office first. I have been there three times since and this has been the best dentist office I have had. Everyone is so friendly, professional, honest, and personable. The first time I went for a cleaning and initial patient exam, I noticed how thorough they were and were not rushed. I have had two previous dentists recommend procedures that Dr. Jelinek said were not yet necessary. One previous dentist said I need to replace two fillings, no reason other than they were older metal and the white replacement is better. That dentist also said the procedure to take out the old fillings doesn't require numbing and they just pull them off. That didn't sound very comfortable and I decided to wait until my next dentist to get another opinion. At my first consultation at Dr. Jelinek's office, he initially said the metal fillings were holding up and were not quite needing to be replaced. Then last month when I returned, he recommended one be replaced. He used a small camera to take a close up picture of the filling and displayed it on a screen in the chair for me to see. I love this feature because I have a better understanding of the situation and can actually see what the dentist is talking about. I setup a return appointment to have my filling replaced with the enamel and it went better than I thought. When I got there, I asked if he should go ahead and replace the second filling right next to the one being done. I figured both fillings were initially put in the same time, so the other will need to be replaced soon. I might as well get it over with and not have to deal with the same thing a year from now. He took another look at them, agreed, and said I'd probably have to get the other one replaced in about a year. We moved forward with replacing both fillings. I do not like the thought of dental work, but this was actually mostly painless. I didn't even feel him put the Novocaine needle in my gums. I had to return a few days later to have one filling drilled down a bit to correct my bite, but I was in and out of the office in 10 minutes! Even though they are not in my dental insurance network, their prices are reasonable and my plan covers most of, if not all of the regular cleaning. You do have to pay for the service out of your own pocket which was a first for me. They file the insurance paperwork and then I get a check in about a week from my dental insurance. To sum it up, this is the best dentist experience I've had, they are very professional and personable, have short wait times, they even ask if you want a drink when you come in, and they have reasonable prices. read more

I initially found Dr. Jelinek through 1-800-DENTIST about 15 years ago and I am still going to see him. One of my favorite aspects of the practice is seeing the same hygenist each time I go. They make a huge effort to make me confortable, including giving me a blanket when I am cold and offering me a water when I arrive. In the past I have had a crown, a few fillings replaced, and a cracked front tooth repaired. I have no complaints. They matched the front tooth perfectly....no one even knows that it is mostly bondo. In conclusion...I highly recommend Dr. Jelenik and his practice. read more

I have been going to Dr. Jelinek for the past 15 years. The entire office is very friendly, all appointments are on time as scheduled, and the atmosphere is relaxed and caring. I look forward to seeing my hygeinist three times each year. The hygeinists take their time and do a thorough, but gentle job. They have always been very proactive at preventive care. I had a few visits that were fine, no problem. On my last visit, he told me I had three cavities and at first, I believed him. Once he left the room, a front office person took me to a sitting area to go over payment and then it became a sales pitch ($1000+) to have my cavities filled. Dr. Jelinek stood nearby and I could tell he was eavesdropping so I became suspicious. Something wasn't passing the smell test, so to speak. I decided to get a second opinion and the second dentist found no issues. When I requested a copy of my x-rays be sent to me so I could forward those on for a second opinion, the receptionists kept probing for info on the second dentist and it got really weird. It has been about 18 months and I'm not in any pain and still no cavities. What happened to the three cavities Dr. Jelinek saw on my x-ray? I am not pleased with Dr. Jelinek or his office. I was a long time (15+ years?) patient of Dr Jelinek. I never had any problem with him or any of the staff. He put some crowns in my mouth and did other work over the years. In May 2013 during a routine cleaning the hygenist took a picture of a dark spot on my teeth. Dr Jelinek came in, looked in my mouth and told me it was a cavity and I would need two crowns as it was between two teeth and neither tooth could be saved with a filling. I was told what the cost would be (about $3600?) and it struck me as a bit high. So I decided to get a second estimate since I don't have dental insurance and pay cash. Curiously the office didn't put the estimate for the crowns in writing. I asked for my records. They agreed to send them if I paid $25, then they only sent some xrays, no actual records even though I provided the forwarding physicians information. Within a few days I went to see another dentist who was highly recommended on Angies List. This new dentist looked at the spot and told me it was a surface stain. He then cleaned off the stain for free. I've waited until now to write this review to make sure nothing went bad with my teeth. It's been 3 years and I've not needed any dental work, no fillings, no crowns, nor had any other problems with my teeth and have continued regular visits with my new dentist. My new dentist tells me I have very good teeth. What Dr Jelinek recommended could not have been preventative work since there was nothing wrong. I have filed a formal complaint with the VA Dept of Health. This whole experience was very disappointing to say the least. You're supposed to trust your doctor, aren't you? read more
