A lot of people know what's up, but Harold is one of the Bay's best-kept secrets. The dude is a guru. He doesn't look old because that's what resistance training does for you, but he definitely has many years in the game based on his scientific and just wise way of moving bodies towards greater health and looks. Harold knows what he's doing; he's in the game to help people and is willing to work with schedules and logistics to get you to your goals. He keeps it on the humble, but my wife says he's got plenty of awards for competition and training too. She has been going three days a week for a few years now and has totally reaped the physical and many nonphysical benefits. Non-physical!?!? Yeah, mission clarity and decreased stress how about that? So I started up a few months ago (I resisted, thinking that since I lifted in high school and a little in college I could manage on my own) and Harold gets me more out of my little 30 minutes a week that you would believe. I feel like Hercules; I can feel and see my body changing (ratcheting towards that LL Cool J, 1999 D'Angelo physique) as we go. That said, Harold didn't start me back to weight training like I would have... said he wanted us to build up smaller muscle groups and get me ready for bench press and all my old standbys. I'm glad he did because his method kept me from injuring myself (got some years under my belt now) and frankly he saved me the days of pain and soreness that I thought were just part of the game. Less discomfort and risk but better results.... hmmmm. The space is perfect for what I need, no nonsense Harold keeps a very professional and respectful shop; great equipment, clean and organized. I bike down most of the time, but there's free parking and tea with a friend at Peet's and a bunch of other good stuff is a few paces away on Fourth Street or there's aquatic park off in the other direction. When I first came to H2 Fitness, I was a bit intimidated as I never had a personal trainer before, but Harold was warm and friendly. He explained each technique especially what I had to look forward to as my body slowly began to transform. He helped guide me through what I needed to do to lose my muffin top and invited me to join a small boot camp just to inspire a bit more motivation and I meet some great people in the process. The rest of the trainers are also very approachable and at least we hear much laughter while working out. It keeps me coming back for more. The gym is quite small as it's located on the Spengler's parking lot near the Amtrak Berkeley Station. In the mornings can be quite noisy with the trains running by during commute hours but after a while your numb to the sounds of the train. This is not 24 HR Fitness as everyone there is either getting personal 1:1 training or in a boot camp setting. If your serious about getting fit then your in good hands. read more
