The oysters kilpatrick were phenomenal and the vine leaf wrapped rice dipped in tzatziki are a new favourite. The salad and seafood were ridiculously fresh and we finished off the former in the dip. I should have ordered more seafood, which I will next time, but I went with the sirloin and a side of the chef's special rice. It was a sensational cut of beef that almost melted in my mouth in its medium-rareness. The mushroom sauce perfectly compliments the sirloin with its freshly sauteed mushrooms and the special chai-infused rice on the side. My brother opted for a chicken yiros main which was deliciously charcoal roasted. We both ate our fill and had to take the rest home because it was too good to leave behind. The warm atmosphere and singular keep it secluded and fast paced. He is hot on his feet and attentive. It shows class when a single person can wait on so many tables and sit down to talk to the customers. It seems really quiet for the most part but there are steady customers getting takeout on the weekdays. These people know good food at moderate prices. Given their comprehensive menu and the freshness of their seafood, I will be making this an eat in/take out regular.

Both the lunch specials ordered were $13 - Chicken souvlaki and lamb yiros - and were served with a generous number of crispy chips and a green garden salad. The chicken was a tad fatty but the lamb was well done. Both lunches had great flavor and were enough to conquer how hungry I was after a morning of climbing the lighthouse and looking at the sights of Port Adelaide. In addition to a lunch special, I also shared a garlic mash potato appetizer with flat bread. That was very tasty but left me with quite a garlicky stench later in the day (I don't think that is a bad thing but others may disagree). Staff were friendly and service was quick. This was definitely a great choice and I really enjoyed feasting on Hellenic cuisine.

Run by Zed and his wife, Addis Ababa is a small mostly family run business that can be found just up Port Road a little further north from the South Road intersection. If you weren't looking for it you would never see it driving down the road. The only reason I even found the place was because I was at the vegetarian restaurant next door one day for a friend's birthday, but that's another story. From the outside, the dimly lit interior gives off a cozyambiancethat draws you in and once you're inside, the smell of the food from the kitchen is enough to make you want to stay forever. The first day I entered the restaurant I was greeted personally by Zed. He made us feel welcome and as they say, the rest is history. I have since introduced pretty much all of my friends to his restaurant and if I make more friends in future, I will be directing them his way. The main thing though that I love about the restaurant is the food, especially the Kitfo which is a dish of raw beef that is cooked in spices. The staple they serve is a home made sourdough bread called injera which looks alot like a white fluffy pancake. As I mentioned before, Addis Ababa is not the first Ethiopian restaurant I've visited in Adelaide. I have been to at least 2 others and Addis Ababa is by far hands down the best in terms of food, customer service and atmosphere. If you are a new customer, Zed will usually come over to your table to explain what is on the menu and to make recommendations, if you need him to. The first time I went to the restaurant I told him I liked spicy food but had a sensitive stomach so he brought out some homemade goats cheese and told me it would help if I ate it with the spicy food. He also recommended that I have some spiced tea to wash away the spiciness once I was done with the meal. Spiced tea tastes very similar to chai, but without the milk. The level of attention and customer service I got was unlike anything I had ever received anywhere else in Adelaide so it was a pleasant surprise. Since that first visit, I've been back to Addis Ababa several times, usually with friends who at the end of the meal all agree with me that the food is delicious and the service is wonderful. While they used to open for lunch, Addis Ababa is now only open for dinners everyday except Wednesday. The average cost for a dish there is about $15 and 2 dishes are usually enough to satisfy me and my wife whenever we eat there. The food is delicious, the atmosphere is great and the service is fantastic. You really couldn't ask for more.

The mezze platter was served on a wooden board and consisted of calamari, octopus and whitebait ever so lightly coated in what seemed to be a fine polenta/potato flour coating. It was melt in your mouth! It was heaven! *goes in to a food coma* Umm now I've forgotten everything else that was on that platter (looks for picture).......... oh yeah!! There were olives, Greek feta, tzatziki, pita bread, spanakopitas, dolmades (yumm these packed so much flavour punch!) and koftas. All were delicious in their own right. If I had to choose my least favourite on the mezze it would be the koftas. They were too small to get a real sense of flavour, okay honestly who doesn't want big fat koftas in their gob! We were adequately stuffed as we had to nibble on the kids meals to finish them off so dessert wasn't on the cards (changed my mind not too long after lol). Instead we ordered some lattes which were just the perfect temperature and strength. The lady that made them knows her stuff! In the end after I got in to my car I was beckoned by the thought of take away dessert. There is a spot in your stomach (there are studies people, scientific studies! Honest lol) that always has room for dessert, especially Cream Kataifi. So I ordered Cream Kataifi, and it was good. Now it's time to unbutton my pants and go belly up on the couch. One thing is for sure: when you're hungry (and cheap) nothing satisfies like a big, fresh, healthy (for the most part) Soonta Roll. It's da bomb B! It's as if a Vietnamese Steve Jobs with a passion for street food created Soonta, using his magic to turn inexpensive ingredients (carrots, cucumber, bread) into tasty treats. Counting carbs? If you venture here between 1 and 2pm you will come across a decent sized lineup. It took me 10 minutes to get through the line and out with my banh mi in tow. If you've got ten minutes to spare, it might be worth your wait. In the line I kept fluctuating between thoughts of 'oh, this is gonna be AWESOME!' to 'oh, they've disappointed me in the past, how bad is it gonna be this time!?' but ultimately I went in glass half full. A banh mi at Soonta will set you back $6.50 for most flavours (pork, soy ginger/katsu/grilled chicken/meatball). They have wonton soups, rice bowls and salads available. Smart business move keeping the options down, and using mostly the same spread of ingredients. That's how you maximise your profit margins! Soonta like to pre-prepare the banh mi rolls with salads - again, a smart-ish move...I say ish because some customers do prefer different levels of ingredients. But I digress...I was happy to take whatever they dished up. The roast pork roll was fairly tasty. The meat was warm, well distributed and in good serving portion. The meat (and the roll to a certain extent) had a good crunch to it too. The salad was a little on the light side, and no way near enough chilli (that was probably my fault, I was daydreaming and forgot to jam it in there!) The Katsu chicken roll comes with chilli and mayo (unless you opt not to) and is a different style banh mi than is typically offered. It's pretty good if you feel like something a bit different. My personal challenge to find the CBD's best banh mi is certainly heating up, but I fear that Soonta didn't quite smash it out the park. I only expect that I will find somewhere that kills it because it is well-known that a few bakeries in the Adelaide Suburbs can floor you with how good their banh mis are, and at a fraction of the cost of a CBD banh mi. I also note that whilst there is a ramp leading into the restaurant, it is pretty steep and, I suspect, it is there to facilitate deliveries and not people. Come on Singapore House, lift your game! Craving about to be happily abated. Facing a busy thoroughfare sits a deceptively large restaurant. There's a small 6 seat Bar at the door, a massive dining room, atrium patio, a secluded back room where people who are not supposed to be dining together are dining together and then there is the Butterfly Room with a 1,000 dead butterflies in boxes on the wall. Why that would be charming is beyond me, but if creepy prehistoric flying insects are your thing, you've reached Nirvana. The Decor is Modern Owner's Surplus Stuff. Tortoise Shells, a few taxidermied Ibex heads, a painting of some ancient Dutch dude, a large tchotchke cabinet crammed with oddities. Think Black Friday goes nuts in Pier 1 Imports. The Vibe: Who's havin' a birthday? Which Amah is taking the Little Dumpling grand daughter out for Dumplings? And then there are the locals who want to eat here on a Sunday even though it is not a Jewish holiday. The Staff: Amateurs who are sweet and willing but know little about the alchemy going on in the kitchen. Order the Raita, and you get a Rice kinda thing. The Bar: Some Tropi-cocktails, a bunch-o-beers and a variety of Vino. I tried aw Singapore Sling served small instead of traditional tall like you'd get at the Raffles Hotel Long Bar. Here, it's made with just Gin instead of Sloe Gin which can cause a quick death. My second effort was a Sunny Side Up with Vanilla Vodka, Pineapple Juice, Passion Fruit Pulp with plenty of seeds to spit at the table of Birthday celebrants at the next table. It was engaging until I started raging at the waiter for yanking it away before I finished firing Passion pellets at the partiers. The Food: There is a full page of the Singapore Street Food you were lusting for. Street Food Fish (Cod, my guess), was lovely. How'd they get the Banana Leaf in which it was steamed to look exactly like a fish? Pretty slick. The Fish was creamy yet firm enough to showcase the kitchen's skill. It was nicely spiced, and got your attention without closing your throat from excessive heat. The dish was complex and yet straight forward and took me back to nights wandering around the Newton Circus food stalls. It wasn't just delicious, it was defishous. The Crispy Beef was a good sized bowl full with a tangle of tender fried Beef strips bathed in piquant Sweet and Sour Sauce waiting to be rolled up in cold Iceberg Lettuce leaves like Cleopatra's first date with Julius Caesar. (She arrived rolled up in a Carpet like a taquito). The other side of the menu is mostly Indian. Well, that's close enough to Singapore isn't it? And the owner is, in fact, Indian, so why not? The Flat Rice Noodles (a Thai Dish that somehow stowed away on the menu) came with large Prawns, cooked well enough, along with Lap Cheong (Chinese Sausage), Bean Sprouts, Baby Shrimp, (which no one ever cleans for some reason. Hey, you change your baby's diaper? Clean the shrimp!), Chilis and Cilantro. It was basically a decent Pad Thai, which I do like BTW despite the Baby Shrimp issue. I did ask for some Raita, and out came Steamed Rice with Toasted Coconut. Rice? Raita? Oh well, close enough as they both start with a R, right? No big deal, I'm flex and the Rice was unusually fluffy which was fine for supporting the next course of Lamb Shank Jungle Curry ordered simply because I was intrigued by the name. You'll need an engine hoist to heave the Lamb Shank around or invite the Birthday party at the next table, with hair full of Passion Fruit Seeds, to join you for a nibble. This was a gorgeous hunk of meat on the bone with a green stew of Okra, Tomato, Herbs, Cilantro, Onions all with a Red Roo punch of heat. Get some Roti (think Narendra Modi fails Dominique Ansel's Cronut Class). However, it was still flaky and crunchy, so I give a passing grade. They had me at The Crispy Beef therefore I say "Singapore House is in the house...so, give it up".

We were seated under an eerie green fluro light, and then waited for about ten minutes, listening to the cheesy keyboard music and waiting for the waiter to bring the menus. After we ordered, the waiter took another ten minutes to get our beers. There was one other person in the restaurant. I would advise people to come here when it is busy or order takeaway because I've had a much better experience at those times. The service was quicker and more attentive and the food fresher. On this particular occasion we could hear the microwave click over - and the lentil curries tasted bland and stodgy. The injera bread was excellent as always though. I love the springy texture - thin like a pancake but aerated like a crumpet or sour-dough. The flavour is similar to sour dough too - deliciously tangy. Although this place is close to my house, I think I'll be trying out some other Ethiopian places further afield.

The restaurant is in an amazing heritage building the some exquisite original art work displayed on the walls. The decor is authentic, dining there was an experience in itself. The owner is a lovely man who assisted us to our seats and introduces our meals to us as they arrived. His knowledge on wines is astounding and his recommendations were some of the best I've had the pleasure to taste. The meals where the absolute high lite. Each meal came out perfectly timed, whilst your palette is still lingering with the last meal however your stomach is ready for the next. The food we experienced are far too complex and the tastes were far to extraordinary to explain in the small review. Each dish we were served was very different to the next, the flavours and delicacy of the meals were flawless.
