    Karaage chicken Don
    Wang R.

this is a Japanese restaurant but they don't serve ramen!!! So I ordered the Karaage (crispy chicken) Don. It was good but you need to drink water after this. This Don doesn't worth 12.9 dollars I think. But it still taste good!

This is a great and fast Japanese sit-down/take-out restaurant on Victoria Street. I stopped in around 7 with two others and there were plenty of seats available. We were really craving sushi, but unfortunately their sushi department is rather lacking and they aren't made fresh to order. I tried the Teppan Teriyaki Chicken Bento Value Set and the chicken was extremely tender. The rice was cooked okay and the miso soup was good, but the salad lacked any dressing. My husband and I also ordered edamame as well as our other friend and they only brough one order to us. After we explained it to them, it took about 10 minutes to get the other edamame and they had to verify with us 3 times that we actually did order two. My husband had the salmon ngiri which looked really fresh, and the Tori Tama (hot udon noodles with a fried egg and crispy chicken) which was really flavorful. I would come back for that! The restaurant serves beer (and even has a beer tower if you want to get crazy) and sake as well. This is definitely good for a casual, quick meal.

All dining guests are seated facing around the master chef, we found it enjoyable and had an intimate conversation while eating even with company of strangers, we both decided to order the Amaterrace special which is NZ 49$ that included an appetizer, soup, 5 hibachi entrees and dessert. We started off with cold bottle of sake, miso soup and has started making stir fried mix veggies, he then followed it with tiger prawns glazed with butter, Akaroa salmon with scallops, teppanyaki fried rice together with NZ premium eye fillet served with garlic mushrooms and marinated grilled chicken, we found it overwhelming but managed to finish all the dishes as they were cooked and served right before our very eyes. We then capped our dinner with a delicious ice cream with chocolate syrup. I considered our dining experience here as one of our best dinners while vacationing in New Zealand, The customer service was awesome, dishes were served in timely fashion in this pristine restaurant with a view. This place is a must try when in Christchurch city Centre!

However, they weren't particularly friendly, and seemed curt at times. But the restaurant is very spacious and great for groups. Banchan in comparison to what I am used to is sorely lacking. The dishes we ordered were not bad, but I have had better versions in other Korean restaurants, even all the way in Lake Tekapo. Another thing I found a bit surprising was this restaurant serving both Japanese and Korean cuisine when the two are quite distinctively different. We did not try any Japanese food though so this review is based solely on the Korean dishes we had.

First off, it seems like a happening place because it's open 24 hours and they allow you to BYO drinks so everyone was walking in with bottles of beer and wine! I noticed that all the wait staff was Korean so perhaps my expectations were a bit high. We ordered the lamb BBQ (since this is something I've never had at a Korean restaurant), the soon tofu soup, and the beef wraps. The lamb BBQ was the best thing we had, it had pretty good flavor. Unfortunately, the soon tofu soup was a disappointment, it was spicy but watery at the same time. Beef wraps were essentially bulgogi wrapped in rice paper. The banchan (side dishes) were a bit lackluster. I was glad to try a Korean restaurant in New Zealand, but unfortunately, my mum's Korean cooking is better. :)
