I've been coming here for years! It's super inexpensive food that's crazy good! Their fajitas (with steak or chicken) are my go to when ordering here, but be warned portion sizes are very high (you reasonably will have leftovers). The restaurant itself on the outside might be a bit sketchy, but the heart of the restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere. Kind staff, low wait times, great food, and as a gluten free person I've never gotten sick while eating here (though mind you their chips are fried, so don't eat the chips with their complementary salsa, they have gluten). Just make sure to double check your tortillas are corn, and you'll be all good to go! read more

Fast service for the most part. During the afternoon the bartender can get a little busy - this is a popular neighborhood hangout, I guess - but they usually have your typical fishbowl-sized margarita on special, and a spread of domestic and ever real mexican beers... The food? C'mon, you know what this is: stupid-fast tex-mex style whatever with beans and rice on the side, covered in mexican cheese mix and maybe some salsa with a splash of red sauce. I've had a bunch of their lunch specials, and a fajita or two, and they're alright but nothing extravagant. It's fast, fairly cheap ($10 or less for a non-seafood entree) and exactly what you think of when you think 'midwestern mexican restaurant'. The place could use a solid deep cleaning (the carpeted stairs leading to the subterranean bathroom were pretty nasty) but all things considered it's a good spot for the family dinner. You'll walk out full, within about an hour, and not totally broke. Let me preface this by saying that I really enjoy this place, which is why it is one of my go-to places.... but now that I have said that, let's get down to business. Had this been my first time here, I would NEVER be back!!! Not based on the food, the food was AMAZING, I base this rating solely on the service.....or lack there of! I won't mention her name, but her initials say it all, B.S.!! She was Johnny on the spot twice, when she took the drink order and when she dropped off the bill....I'll get back to the bill in a minute. We put in our drink order, a jumbo marg, a water and a large Dos Equis amber and good ol BS was off to place them. Meanwhile, the excellent servers were buzzing all around us delivering chips and drinks to people that came after us, one even stopped and questioned if we had placed a drink order yet. We sure as shit did, 10 minutes ago! FINALLY, the drinks arrived....well, except the water and BS apologized for the wait and said that the Dos Equis is a "hard beer to pour"......really sweetie?! This isn't my first el rodeo and it sure as shit isn't my first Dos Equis Amber! Even so, that in itself wouldn't be bad, but wait, there's more. (Starting to feel like an infomercial) Here she comes to take our order and of course does not write anything down because she has a superb memory apparently (insert huge eye roll)! We order the girabaldi, (which is quite honestly one of, if not THE best thing on the menu) with all beans and no rice, with a side of their house hot sauce. She promptly steals the hot sauce from the table next to us and walks away. My bad, I should have said HOUSE hot sauce....wait, I DID!!! Our food comes and what do you know, RICE! She didn't drop off the food and she was nowhere to be found but when we did finally see her TO DROP OFF OUR BILL!!!!!! We informed her that we were supposed to have beans and could we please get some HOUSE hot sauce and could we please get another beer. She snatched up the bill and low and behold, this Dos Equis was an easier pour and it came in under 10 mins.... still no beans BUT, the corrected bill was back.... so my date apparently doesn't get another marg which would equal more money for the restaurant AND a potentially larger tip, right?!?? BS ain't got time for that!!! Get em in, get em out is her philosophy! The beans finally come out and and we get another apology for the wait because we all know they make those from scratch for each order and there isn't just a huge pot of them in the back (insert another eye roll). The top of the beans look like the skin of a sun loving 80 year old Floridian woman, burnt, cracked and angry! I hesitantly scooped some with a chip and tasted what I can only compare to lava and SURPRISE, burnt the roof of my mouth.... again, not necessarily BS's fault, but had she grabbed them from the heater within a reasonable time, I may have been spared some taste buds. I sat there drinking my "easy pour" beer while my gf stirred the ice of her old marg around and reminisced about the times before when we had good service. We sat there as BS circled us like a vulture waiting for the payment, apparently she doesn't like to wait... weird! I contemplated leaving a note on my bill to let her know what she could have done better but I realized I had already wasted enough time there so I reflected my feelings in the tip. Mind you, I take no joy in leaving a bad tip, I am usually a VERY generous tipper, I just couldn't reward such HORR service. I won't say that I won't be back, because I really do like this place, but you can bet your ass I will ask to be in the no BS section from now on! read more

I want to salvage this place and give it 2 stars, but I seriously can't find a reason to. **MAYBE** give them a star because the chips and salsa weren't half bad, but ... even then, I can't bring this thing up from 1 star. The margarita -- I love margaritas. I've had amazing expensive margaritas and I've had cheap, homemade party margaritas. I'm not picky -- but I have my limits. This -- by far-- was the worst margarita I've ever had. Red Bull and Popov would have tasted better. I ordered 3 tacos -- carne asada and chorizo. I LOVE carne asada tacos ... and I LOVE chorizo. How can you possibly screw this up so bad? The carne asada was flavorless, the chorizo tasted old, and the whole thing was covered in melted cheese. Honestly, I thought I'd wandered into a Taco Bell ... maybe even a Taco Bell at a truck stop. To top things off, the check came with a total ... that's it. Nothing itemized. I manually did the math and knew the total was off. I requested the server itemize the receipt and bring it back to me. He came back -- with the total scratched out, a cheaper total written in, and no itemized total as I requested. I have no idea where these 4 and 5 star reviews are coming from. Maybe this is just the best Mexican in this town. But for my money, I'd get better Mexican food at Chili's... or even Taco Bell. Avoid. PS Oh, and there's no air conditioning. Just a little fan in the corner. I kept seeing the servers readjust the fan. I wish they'd just get some working A/C and spend more time focusing on the quality of the food. read more

On a positive note the drinks are big and the service is fast and friendly. The chicken fajita are good. Big portions of meat, beans and rice. For Anglo American Mexican food it's passable. Now the bitch session: This is the first time I've had hamburger meat in the beef taco and burrito in a sit down Mexican restaurant. If I wanted then I would have went to Taco Bell and saved myself $5. The burrito was buried in a canned red sauces trying to past for a salsas and topped with cheese. The taco shell came right from the box and the cheese straight from the grocery store. The hamburger meat must have been flavored with a Spanish dry mix from the local Hy-Vee store. I would have given the place a 1 star if the chicken fajita weren't average. Better than Chili's and worse than Chevy's but that's not really saying much. Tortillas are okay. Over all I'd say this is an okay restaurant. On a side note, I've eaten Mexican food all my life, even eaten it in Mexico which is different than American style Mexican food, so I'll admit that I'm picky when it comes to American style Mexican food. This place is Anglo American Mexican food, which I don't like. For Anglo American Mexican food it's average. I've had better and worse. This place is passable. read more

Me and a friend used to go to this placeall the time.Food is average for this area...bland big cheap plates. Last time I went there with a friend...before the place was burned down...went for lunch. Food was ...let's say OK....they left the check and left.When we went to leave...nobody around.Nobody at the register...at the bar.I even wenty down the stairs...nobody...typical of their service. Resolving to make the most invincible burrito in Iowa, the owner rebuilt using fireproof cinder block and gypsum construction. The gorditas here are a real treat. Do not order anything to go from the 1st ave location! Ordered with their on line app with very specific instructions for 2 of the 5 meals only to have it messed up again. Called to let them know what happened, was told to bring the 2 dinners back (which I found a little disturbing) after they had been eaten out of before realizing they were incorrect. Was also told the 2 dinners would be made correctly and come back in 20min. Returned in 20 min was greeted by someone who asked for the food and was told the replacement was being prepared. Waited another 10 min ( 30 total) to have a waitress argue with me and nothing had actually been made to replace it like I was told on the phone. I never once asked for any money back thru all of this, all I wanted was the food to be made correctly. Apparently it is too much to ask that maybe the kitchen help should identify on the lids an abbreviation of what they are putting in container. Ten years of patronage down the drain, never going back to either location. In some ways I am glad they never prepared anything like promised. Would not want to know what they could have done as a payback. No thanks moving on. read more

I love it here. Great tasting fantastically price margaritas. I love their shredded chicken. I have been going here since the place opened and I do occasionally get my order messed up (it's rare) When it does happen the quickly fix any issues. The place can be a tad "untidy" at times. I wouldn't say dirty but definitely not spotless. It has a neat interior and bar area as well as an always friendly staff. I haven't had anything here that was unediable or gross. I just can't give it a full 5 stars and feel right about it for some reason. However I do love the place and their queso dip. Which is waaaaaaay better here than any other Mexican restaurant by the way. read more

This place has good food. The menu is not innovative, and does not even include appetizers. However, the endless chips and salsa make appetizers unnecessary. The chips and salsa are above average. Salsa is served in glass bottles, and has a decent amount of spiciness. Entres were all well prepared, with chicken, chorizo, and steak dishes all recommended. The only not recommended part of the meal was the Spanish rice. While there was a lot of it provided, it did not seem fresh, or well prepared, or flavorful. Not a big deal, but I do like all parts of a meal to add to the total meal experience. If a giant spoonful of subpar rice just adds bulk and volume to a dish, skip it. The entres were served with generous portions, and the prices very reasonable. The cooking style is Americanized Mexican food, and no one dining here should expect authentic Mexican food. Well I have to say, this used to be one of my favorites. I still think they have the best salsa in town though. Its blended, not chunky, not that thats bad, and has lots of cilantro. Their cheese queso dip is very good also. Besides the fajitas, it is remarkable how similar the dishes look as many dishes are topped with a tomato, sour cream, guac, and lettuce with a side of beans and rice. Food does seem like it used to be a bit better quality than it is now, but is still pretty good in my opinion. As far as bad experiences, I was there once and our server was extremely intoxicated and got all of our orders wrong. Custom orders are not always correct, but usually no more than than any other place for the most part. read more

I love to eat here with my friends. Their chips and salsa were good and fresh before you start your actual meal. The food was great, what is the most important for restaurant, and warm. The amount of food was average, but for me it was quite a lot, but I am the person who don't eat a lot. We also order the drink, I liked mine, something Sangria, which was sweat and not too strong. My friends ordered some Margarita, it was good too. It is quite busy when I was there for dinner, and also noisy too.
