Every field, every table, every inch being utilized BUT not today! Today's generation doesn't like to go outside. A park goes to waste on them. It's a true shame. Tony and I walked around the small groups of people fishing and talking. We saw 2 turtles. I took pics of flowers and the beautiful scenery while our grandson enjoyed the playground with his mother. My only concern is that people are NOT using the trash cans. Pure lazy people! The cans were not full, people just chose not to take the few extra steps to throw stuff away properly!!

The groundhogs, however, despise this place since the lead groundskeeper of the groundhog community left many years ago to audition for the next Punxsutawney Phil role. He won the audition, which meant the rest of the groundhog community had surrendered their power and naming rights to Radical Ringtail, the leader of the Charleston Trash Panda gang. My MIL first sent us to another park that had a super rinky dink playground. I told my husband, text your cousin, he'll know the best playground in the area. Thank god we did, because he directed us here. Driving up I was a little concerned, because it is in the heart of a run down area. However, when we were there at 11 a.m. on a Thursday, it was completely empty. By the end one family came and joined, but I was surprised how few people were here. (I had the same thought at the Clay Center, so I've just accepted that I have no idea where the young children of Charleston are.) I just read online that it was recently renovated. No wonder it looked pretty modern and clean. None of that mulch on that ground that gives you splinters when it breaks your fall. There are two playgrounds so my kids (two and four) ran back and forth between the two. There's also a picnic area in the middle that is covered. Definitely bring sunscreen. I was surprised there's no trees or any type of covering. However, that seems to be the norm here, because the other playground didn't have any type of covering either. Being from out of town, I'm used to lots of shade at playground, so I'm glad I brought sunscreen. Parking is street parking, but there is tons of it. The park is fenced so that made it feel a little safer as well. This will be my go-to park every time we visit.

They have grades from V0 to V9 with some very challenging moves. The owners David & Julia Statler set them competitively and grade accurately. It's not the largest gym but they are planning on expanding and setting up some sport routes on a taller wall. We climb 2-3 times a week, they reset walls enough to keep it fresh. Once you get there it's easy to connect with other climbers and join them in some outdoor climbing/ bouldering. They're also very willing to spill their Beta if you ask. Very clean and welcoming atmosphere. They also have some gear and resources to help your climbing progress.

Routes are set very well and are graded accordingly. The owners set the routes for all skill levels…read moreand incorporate moves that will be similar for those that want to climb the New River. If you spend anytime at all in this gym it is super easy to get hooked up with the local climbing communities and good intel on the crags at the New.
