It is like a Tesco Extra dedicated to Oriental Foods. Need it and you will find it. We used to go to Chun Wing at Dobbies Loan but this place puts it to shame. There are only two cities that have a See Woo, London and Glasgow. Mainly staffed by Chinese and Poles, they can generally point in the right direction if you know what you want. The selection is impressive. Dry goods, frozen, seafood, noodles and spices, you will not find anything that matches this place till you hit London. Just go and wander, if nothing else to find out what things people will eat and insist on being imported for their consumption. Durian fruit or Shrimp Chips - everything is a gastronomic adventure. Think of it as a chance to experience something completely new and you just have to wander a little bit past the M8.

I get a bit like a kid in a candy store who happily throws the whole section of Japanese foods into the trolley, as well as endless packets of noodles. The supermarket is nothing fancy - bare concrete floors and a slightly odd layout can be confusing (I always worry I've missed something amazing). Over the past few visits we've managed to get some really good stuff though - they stock kewpie (delicious Japanese mayonnaise), cheap steaming baskets for cooking at home, frozen dumplings when you need a lazy dinner as well as a huge range of cheap herbs and spices. You'll never pay supermarket price again. I only wise they had more of a Japanese selection - but they do have a good mix of Asian food, as well as some European too. This is definitely a love-it or hate-it place, I can see that it might put some unadventurous people off, but if you like trying something different, have a look here and see what you can find!

From perogies (spelling?) to awesome sausages, tinned good and fresh fruit. I've been back, I'll be back again and would advise anyone who's in the area to pop in for a nosey. Although I'm not Polish, I've spent quite a lot of time there and am a big fan of the culture. As soon as you step through the doors of this deli - you feel a bit like you're actually in Warsaw, and not in the West End of Glasgow. Wood paneling and straw baskets make this place undeniably cute, and as well as shelves and shelves of canned and tinned goods (all in Polish - obviously) you'll also find fresh goods. This includes a meat counter to die for (what can I say? I'm a carnivore at heart) as well as a mini bakery and lots and lots of cheese. All these products are delicious - and also very reasonably priced. I also love the fact that they sell Polish newspapers and magazines here. This definitely adds to the sense that a trip into Polish Taste is like a mini-holiday to Eastern Europe!

First off it is cheap and it has lots of unusual types of food for you to try. The cheese selection is great and the olives are delicious, you can buy these packed but they still taste really fresh. There is also a wide selection of spices and herbs that are affordable. If you like experimenting with your curry then this is the place for you. Sadly it is not all lovely spices! The food can be a tad past it and the shop feels really small and stuffy. The staff are also quite rude and I have been made to wait on a number of occasions while the check out operator chatted with someone and I waited in the queue. There is also no obvious place to queue and as such you can get skipped from time to time.

One disappointment is that, although this place is supposedly licensed, no alcohol from the country is on sale here and indeed a fridge which is labelled "Fresh Beer" actually holds a range of Polish meats. Nevertheless, Polski Supermarket has earned another thumbs up thanks to the range of Polish magazines, newspapers and books it has for sale. This is something I haven't noticed anywhere else and ensures it's an extremely handy resource for Glasgow's extensive Polish community.

It is pretty much the same shop as far as I can tell. This shop is well needed in the East End as there is a distinct lack of ethnic/world food stores for all your cooking supplies & ingredients. I used to pop in here all the time when I lived closer for my favourite chapatis and also the odd spice or herb but this place sells so much more. They specialise in selling Kurdish, Arabic, Polish, Iranian & Turkish foods, fresh & frozen. They also sell Halal meat, which is brilliant in an area that hasn't many ethnic produce shops or butchers, let alone Halal butchers. I was on the hunt for some saffron one day & I'd tried so many supermarkets & shops that I'd almost given up looking and then I remembered this place (it's also handy in that it is open 7 days a week). Right enough, these dudes had what I was looking for and a great price too! Saffron can be stupidly expensive (I've recently seen some in M&S at a daft price) but in here they sold wee individual plastic containers of saffron for only 99p! Brilliant. Joojeh kebabs for tea!! Yas :) As well as herbs, spices, fresh foods, meat and the jars/packets they also sell fresh ethnic pastries/sweets and breads too. Lots of interesting items to get your oriental cook on but not the same amount of choice as others. There isn't anything fundamentally wrong but the place needs a good spruce up and a deep clean. What mostly irritates me is that they don't keep freak stock of products and things don't necessarily come back in stock. The second thing is the lack of staff on a checkout. They have 2 checkouts but I have only ever seen 1 in operation and always a queue of people waiting to pay. The final thing is the parking or lack of, there is about 10 spaces allocated to the shop and it can be full more often than not. It is definitely one to visit as this is an easy walk from the city centre or from cowcadans subway.

Aldi, like arch-rval, Lidl, stock a fairly limited range of mostly own-brand food, and weekly non-food special offers, such as DIY, motoring, outdoors, etc. By limited range, I mean that they tend to focus on a narrower spread of varieties of each product, I quite like this - because I tend to procrastinate... now which variety of houmous to choose? Regular, Peri-peri, red pepper, chilli-infused, etc. Keeping it simple speeds up my shopping no end! They now have a "deluxe" range too, like Tesco Extra Special or Sainsbury's Taste the Difference. For a city-centre supermarket, this is probably the best in Glasgow. Prices way cheaper than Asda, and a far wider range than the Tesco/Sainsbury's convenience stores. And with a proper fresh fruit and veg selection. This store is popular with students at the nearby halls, as well as Merchant City residents. Currently, twin pack red pointed sweet peppers are 79p - compared with around £1.80 in Tesco. 500ml Williams Bros beers are £1.60 or so, tinned tomatoes 30p, 6 large free-range eggs, 99p, cherry plum tomatoes 59p. The weekly super-six fruit and veg deals is epic, last week a bag of six oranges for 59p... amazing! A special mention has to be made for Aldi's Ribera del Duero red wine - this is absolutely one of the best budget (sub-£15) reds you can buy. Trust me on this, you'll impress the snobbiest of dinner guests with this one, it's awesome, and under £6. In summary, really good quality stuff, large range of fresh fruit and veg, good meat and chilled section, great booze, and who knows, you might pick up a bargain riding crop or air compressor!
