So this is one of those sketchy looking supermarkets that you'd probably rush past, in a hurry to get to the Tesco Superstore across the street. On my way to Tesco, I stopped by b/c there was a queue of customers waiting for ... wait for it .. a £3.50 whole roast chicken! Yes boys and girls, £3.50 for enough to meat to feed 3-4 people. Just pick up some chips from the chippy down the street (.. or Tesco's frozen section), and you're set. Or do what we did - had chicken and waffles for dinner!
Its a cash only place, and you have to order your chicken first. You'll get a number, but both times, I arrived around 6:30 and had to wait around 45 minutes - unfortunately, the wait is the downside :( Check with the guy to see what number is next in line, b/c there are probably lots of people ahead of you who are coming back to collect later. Even though the workers say its about a 10-20 minute wait, don't forget there are probably other numbers ahead of you. Next time, I'll order the chicken first, then pop by Tesco to pick up anything else I'm missing. The chicken is just roasted with lemon juice and herbs. Tender and juicy, could be more flavorful.. but hey, I'm satisfied enough!
Halal Way has an assortment of veggies, a fresh meat counter, a dairy section, and other ethnic goods such as nuts, tahini, jams, breads.. I usually get massive bunches of dill, parsley, or coriander for 70p. The veggies aren't the best quality, but they are probably OK if you're gonna eat them within 2 days.
Actually, my #1 find at this place was a box containing a 500 gram slab of honeycomb, for ONLY £4!!! The London Honey Co sells their own honeycomb, £10 for 170 grams... and after trying the stuff I got from Halal Way, my wallet is much happier and well, it still tasted like honey.
*tip on the honeycomb: eat it with blue cheese and crackers, it was a definite hit at a dinner party I attended! read more
