I absolutely love this place! It has become our favorite destination, so much so that we regularly make the special trip from our home--which is over two hours away--just to visit. The selection of used books is enormous and wonderfully curated, but the true standout is the cookbook section. It is nothing short of amazing! It's a treasure trove of unique community cookbooks from ladies' auxiliaries, churches, schools, and local organizations that you simply cannot find anywhere else. Beyond the books, the prices are amazing, the coffee is great, and the atmosphere is just perfect for browsing. It's the complete package. My only wish is that they would open a location in the RGV so I wouldn't have to drive so far! Until then, we'll gladly make the pilgrimage. Half price books is a venerable institution with years of great service and friendly employees. I can't sing their praises enough! The cafe on the other hand has a very rude and surly manager! She needs to find employment where interaction with customers is non existent! Today was the third day I came for a sandwich. Both previous times I paid with my credit card without issue via a very engaging employee. She couldn't have been nicer. Same goes for the young woman today. She told me "cash only" and I explained to her I didnt have enough cash. She went to the manager who came back, snatched my card from my hand (all along sporting a very sour visage), ran my card and then proceeded to THROUGH THE CARD in front of m. Then she stomped off most likely to take a much needed PILL!!! "Cash only"!! Maybe the IRS needs to visit this establishment's books!! Needless to say I won't return on the cafe. Only half price books in corpus. Only half price in South Texas besides Austin that is really worth checking out! Been coming to this one for years. Buy back rate was horrible 6 best seller books in the more recent section of the bookcase avg about 6 to 7 dollars a book and I got 6 dollars for 6 books... If I stick with them and sell back my books then I wont complain about the price but when you can only buy 1 book with the price they give you it sucks... Overall they had a good collection of items to read I spent a fortune on books that I probably would of paid triple for the amount of books I got (maybe 10 to 12 books). The overall customer service was not very pleasant. I think they could of been a bit more cheerful like they actually liked working there. A plus to the store was the Vinyl Records and DVD collection they offered since my boyfriend is a big fan I will bring him back to take a look at the selection. Nothing I would personally buy. The cafe was great but they didn't seem to be owned by the same people. I like that you can go and read in the cafe area and try out the coffee and desserts with a good book. read more

A little piece of paradise! This place has been my spot since I was a kid. Everyone that works here is on genius level, I love how much they know about everything. They offer every genre, and when they don't have a book you want in-store, they can transfer books from another location at no extra fee. I love 1/2 Price Books but the staff here weren't as friendly and nice and ones I'm used to at other locations. One dude berated a customer for returning a book. "Why are you returning it? If you didn't want it, you shouldn't have bought it!" I guess this dude never learned customer service skills 101. They were getting ready to close so they started clearing out the store pretty quick. I regret not pointing out the rude dude to the manager. read more

I was excited to have a half price books located so close to our hotel, however was underwhelmed by my experience. This location was very crowded, even at 10:30 on a Saturday morning. Not a lot of paperback best sellers displayed or any turning racks with recently published popular favorites like other locations. You have to really dive in and search for what you want- I like it when things are better displayed and easier to find-- this also opens my eyes to new authors and titles I didn't even know existed. I found a few books but the slow moving long line deterred me from purchasing anything. With a better layout, a little more organization and eye catching displays, not to mention more employees working the registers, several stars could easily be added. But until then, just a ho hum experience. read more

I always enjoy how the community has an impact on what these stores carry. I really enjoy the great selection of aquarium, marine biology, and nature books this location has to offer. I've never been disappointed with what I find. If I could make this store perfect, I would love to see some type of inventory system so that I can ask if they carry specific titles at the time. I know, it would be near impossible with the constant movement of books in that store, but that's what would make it perfect. It's now a treasure hunt for specific, non-mainstream titles. We were only in Corpus Christi for one day, but we stopped at the book store and found a bunch of great deals. My husband finally had to drag me away. This store has both used and new books, video games (thankfully my son didn't see that till we were already headed out of the store), VHS and DVD movies and television shows, CDs and records, and a nice sized kids' section. We did have trouble finding the place. Google maps gave us the approximate location, but then we had to call the store to actually find it. Aim for the northwest corner of the intersection of S Padre Island Drive and Staples - near the Pier One. (I just re-googled it and got a better fix on the place. I don't know why I didn't get that map the first time around. Oh well.) If you're a book lover, this is a great place to stop. read more

Great place to sit and browse since a cafe is attached to the store. A personal favorite of mine is their book boxes. Get a $10 microwave sized box with random paperback books inside of a selected genre. A great way to expand your favorite authors and get loads of books for cheap! Also has a nice friendly staff who can answer your questions. read more

I always love visiting Half Price Books, this one included. They are FULL of a large variety of books. They also have a decent clearance section. This location has a really quaint, and seemingly popular, coffee shop attached to the store. Smells so good! On this visit I was specifically looking for one nonfiction and one fiction. This year I've challenged myself to alternate between the two genres and with me being about halfway done with Jimmy Buffett's "A Pirate Looks at Fifty", I feel like I'm cutting it close and must have my next fiction ready =) Of course I had no problem finding one of each...and an additional fiction. But two were $1 each, so yay! The employee who checked me out was super friendly and helpful. Despite the fact that he had a nice line behind me waiting to check out he took the time to mention a particular area in town we should check out. i feel like i give 5 stars out like i eat gummi bears at the movies: too much. but seriously. this bookstore is my all time, hands down, #1 favorite place to purchase reading material. now, i love me the library, i love me some BookPeople in Austin and BayBook in Concord, CA...but fucking hell i LOVE Half-Price the BEST. there isn't a topic you can't find a great book on here. their clearance section is addictive, second to none and enables one to spend $10 and walk out with more than half a dozen books!!!! SAY WHAT? yes, exactly. they have a massive New Age/Wiccan/Pagan section and it's by far and away my favorite section. i would say at least a quarter of the books i've bought have been purchased here. i spent many hours here when visiting my family before i ended up moving here. my mother & i spent many happy hours wandering around after her chemo app'ts. i got a lot of good, happy, warm, fuzzy feelings about this joint. my niece and i would come and do her homework in the adjoining cafe'. i've spent a lot of time perusing the shelves. i've spent a lot of time wrapping up books to shoot off across the world for friends and family to enjoy. the staff is knowledgeable and definitely without a snotty, hipster type attitude frequented in bookstores. i have been a loyal customer to this location since i first visited on a vacation in November 2000. i go in here at least 2-3 times a month. when i feel like crap? i hit this place! please, CC locals...tell me i ain't alone in the HPB love! read more

Huge selection of not only used books but discounted books from large retailers. I was able to find a $27 cookbook for $10. I could not have anticipated the amount of items to look at in this store. If you are looking for a cookbook on many cuisines, you can find it here. Plus, there are new items at a discounted price. Stop by. You won't be sad. The downsides, there is very little room to look at the book comfortably. People are literally crashing into you because they cant get through all the stuff. Also, when you go to buy your item, there appears to be a line, but no stanchions. So who knows where to stand and whos first. Maybe a deli number system would work. read more

I don't know why people have awesome ratings but only put four stars, however, I'm putting four stars because as much as I love this place the majority of the people who work there aren't very social. I would be walking around several times searching for a certain section and none of they would ask if I needed help. By the time I find the section myself, one of the people there would ask if I needed help. Other than that I like that they are close by the grocery store and when I feel like I want to check out books, videos, or random gifts that's the place for me to go. It's almost like my second walmart, my third mall. Plus, sometimes they sell textbooks that I need for cheap. They're usually an edition older but it still works perfectly for class. read more

I arrived around 1 on a Saturday and it was PACKED. This book store is a book readers dream. The books are organized by theme and author. Best place to buy books in Corpus. Sometimes they don't have the exact title I want, but the selection is so large that I can find something else instead. If you go to the cafe inside, try the mocha almond cake. It is obviously homemade and completely delicious. read more

I browsed the cookbook and health section and they do have a good selection, but again, this location seems higher in price than others I've visited. I've had problems here with clerks not knowing how to handle a gift card transaction. Once, I attempted to use up the balance on a card and pay the balance due in cash. The clerk insisted I could not do that, although on another occasion I was told that I could. On my last visit, the clerk told me ( after my purchase) that I had a remaining balance of 0.01 when it was actually over $5.00. The people that work here are what make this place suck. In terms of books available pretty much no different than any other hpb I have been to. I've shopped at maybe 30 or so. The employees and management are total dicks. Every now and then someone cool will work there but they don't stay long. I don't blame them. I wouldn't want to work with a total bunch of dilholes either. On more than one occasion I have made my way to the register to have some d-bag clerk up-charge me on a book after saying "this is a rare book and someone made a mistake when they priced it at the reasonable price that was originally on it". Then they tell me that the new price is literally 8x the price on the book. Total d-bag move. I figured out real quick that when this happens they are just sitting it aside for someone they know that wants it. It is actually cheaper to buy on eBay when this happens. I hate this store but am forced to go here occasionally because there are no other used book stores in corpus. They suck...bad! This is based on fact and not my opinion of how bad this store sucks. I'll avoid it every chance I get. I'm sure that if you know someone that works there you will get good prices. Don't expect it if you are just a regular customer. I have also seen people who are friends with people that work there make offers that are significantly less than marked and then get the book for that offer. If you don't have a good "buddy" that works there don't bother. read more
