I'm decluttering and decided to sell some books. Most of them were on sailing. The store is in Kansas. They pay in part on resell potential. There evidently isn't much demand for books on sailing. I'm a big fan of Half Price Books. First of all, I love the idea of buying and selling used books, games, and movies. If you're anything like me you'll purchase a book, read it once, and then it's just collecting dust in your house. Usually it only earns us 5-10 dollars but you can put that towards a new book or game, which is often fun. This is the second time I have visited this bookstore and I always find a good book to read. They have a good selection of all types of various reading materials, including videos/cd's/records/magazines. I do believe that the Clearance section prices have gone up in the last year or so at all of the Half Price Book chains. The cashiers are fine, not particularly friendly but get the job done. The store is clean and bright. Bring a bag of your own if you're purchasing more than you want to carry or they have nice reusable bags for 99 cents. read more

Don't expect to be paid fairly for your items. I had over 55 DVDs, mostly new and still in the wrappings along with 35 music CDs, all in excellent condition and another bag of books which were in pristine condition and new as well. It was shocking to see that they allotted about 25 cents for each item when they turn around and make a 3,100% uplift! It was sickening and wrong to take advantage of people. read more

We had a big load of pretty old books to re-home and several people said that this is the place to go. Everyone was friendly and pleasant and they called us when they were done. I have never had a store agree to take all of my books when I bring in a load, so I was expecting to get some rejects. Nope. They took them all. We didn't get paid much, but we are so happy not to have to take them back and find a place to unload them. And happy to know others will be able to enjoy the books. Since I've received insulting cash offers on current hardback books before, I should've known better. But I took in 21 good movies on VCR tape. I know hardly anyone owns a VCR anymore, and said as much, but they insisted they wanted to assess them. Twenty wasted minutes later, their cash offer was 41 cents. Ridiculous! We went in tonight to pick up a Dog Man book for my son and they offered him a free complimentary dog man tattoo when they saw how excited he was about getting the boo. I came 2 days in a row, with items for resale. First I had a complete Columbo TV series along with all the follow up movies made until the early 2000s. I always sani-wipe the discs and boxes to present well...The sale offer I received was $1.25. On the second visit I brought about 9 DVDs, 2 of which were new in their cases - a History Channel disc, and the movie of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. There was Russell Crowe, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hanks.. I also had about half a dozen CDs of Tony Bennet, Montovani. A variety. The clerk offered .22. Twenty two cents? If any one of those DVDs sold off their shelf, the store would have made $5 or $6 easily. So, seller beware..the criteria have become so tight on what HPB buys back, you'd be better off just donating what you have to City Union Mission, or a hospital or library. read more

I can always find something here. You can't go in looking for anything specific, but the inventory changes often so there are always new treasures to be found. I have a collection of copies of Pride & Prejudice, and I can usually find copies here I haven't seen before. I just love all the different editions and artwork. I've even found German and French translations here. Good selection of magazines too. From last week to decades ago. Lots of home design mags which I love to peruse. They will buy your old stuff too. I just took in 6 boxes of books from my garage that at some point I clearly thought were treasures but now I'm like 'I don't want this! What was I thinking?!' and they gave me $50. You can take cash or get it in credit for store purchases. Don't ever go in expecting to make money, though, because sometimes I've taken in one bag and gotten $30, and sometimes I've taken in a carload and gotten $5. Just think if it as a recycling place for fellow book & movie lovers. read more

It's a great store with a huge selection. Personally, I think the prices leave something to be desired, but it's still way better than Barnes & Noble. It's always clean (including the restroom) and I can usually find something to read. The only issue I really have is that the vast majority of the folks that work there are a bit snippy, especially the guys at the book buying counter. read more

I wasn't prepared for all the treasures to be found here. I definitely should have come with a list of my favorite authors or titles on my wish list! I was quite distracted and could have done some serious wallet damage with some pre-planning. As it is I swallowed up a whole hour in what felt like 15 minutes. Wandering up and down the many aisles you'll find paperbacks and hardcovers on pretty much every subject. The store is laid out really well and the displays catch your interest as you walk by. Service was friendly and available without being intrusive, they really "get" the joy of just wandering the stacks. Oh, and yes all paperbacks are HALF price, but I found many many things priced even less than that. Score! read more

This is definitely the Half Price Books to visit (to buy) in the area. The store was nice and I found several books to buy. I spent some money. I am In from out of town and had to visit them all in the area to get a variety since I frequent mine back home. I found some different titles and the staff was decent. I don't expect much from customer service at any half price books, but the prices of buying are generally good. read more

This location of Half Price Books is very dangerous for me, since it's in a convenient location, where I can pop in, & either browse to my heart's content, or go in to kill some time ... either way, I end up dropping some bucks. The prices can't be beat! I always head straight for the $1.00 racks. I would pay more for books here, but 9 out of 10 times, I can ALWAYS find either a new author I've been wanting to read, or a new book by a fantastic author I haven't sampled yet! It always happens. I also love scouting out their TV on DVD section, to see what kind of bargains to be found there. Regular DVD section is good, as well as the CD section. They also have the fun stuff around (like book marks, calendars, & the awesome True Blood pins I bought on this visit, that I added to my man satchel (will NOT call it a purse! LOL) I took a pic of the items I scored on this visit -- one was a paperback that came out in 2013 -- yep, book was a buck!!!!! Wild!!!!! Employees are always nice & down to earth (for the most part!) I now read on my tablet, but will continue to browse this (& other locations) to find regular books I can hold. This is first and formost a USED book store. They do have some nifty new books, cards, bookmarks and nifty gifties, but they sell and buy used books. I've sold several boxes of books and have not made a mint, but more than I would have selling them along with thousands of others on half.com or amazon and I don't have ship them. My latest find was Thomas Merton's biography, which I've been wanting to read for a couple of years now and a new book mark. What is great is i can sell it back when I'm done reading it. It's a fun place to watch people and when you are done you can go drink coffee next door at Dunn Bros. My favorite place to hang out in Jo Co when I have time to kill between appointments and meetings. read more

The policy that you have to stay in the store while they count books really isn't a great one. I get that they want you to be around so that you have to wander and look at the books which encourages you to buy them... But when I have to be in the store for an hour, it just isn't a good business practice. Some kind of text message system would be ideal- you get a text when your stuff is ready and you can return. Otherwise I need to look for another book consignment place. read more

I came to this Half Priced Bookstore to sell back textbooks that were 2-3 years old. The store it's self was clean. There was a huge selection of books in a wide variety of categories. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of new popular books. I was also surprised with the amount of toys/puzzles/children's materials. I was disappointed with the amount offered for my textbook. It was much more convenient than selling them online and figuring out shipping. read more

I had no idea this Half Price books existed, until Yelp directed me here of course. When I walked in, it was stunning. And you say, how stunning can a bookstore be? Ceiling to floor covered in books, videos, music, etc. It was well organized, had clearly marked sections, and great items on display. I sold some books only to turn around and buy more books. It's my own personal curse. The man behind the counter was quick and friendly. I found an awesome animal photograph portrait book which I traded for the books I brought in for extra cash. The cashier was also helpful and nice. This is a super duper location that I will remember first the next time I need to trade some books. read more

Fantastic store! I like this location better than any other, even better than the one in Lawrence, KS. Great diversity of selections, excellent prices and I have gotten surprising amounts of money for my books that I brought in. I have found a great selection on Jewish related books; including Hebrew language books, Jewish secular and religious literature, Jewish history, etc. Of the locations I have visited, this specific location has had the best selection of Jewish-themed books. I am also always looking for books in German and French. This location has an ever changing selection of them as well as a respectable variety of language-learning books and software. read more

My bookshelves and garage always appreciate my visits to half price books. Not only can you peruse their vast selection of books here, but selling old and unwanted literature is a snap. I've taken countless books here over the years to sell back, albeit at a highly discounted rate. It's frustrating to bring three boxes of books and only get 10 bucks back, but it does free up unneeded clutter around the house. Both this and the Westport location have a fine selection of odd and rare books in addition to their huge amount of common and popular ones. Staff are always friendly and quick to make suggestions. Definitely worth hanging around for more than an hour to browse and find some stimulating reading materials. read more

This place is the bomb! I have bought so many books here my bookshelf is about to explode! I've also spent some major money on several records. Their books are very inexpensive. I've bought some used books that look almost new! They have hardcovers & paperbacks. They have every subject. Every age group (the children's selection is huge!) There is also a section of classic editions. They have DVD and CD sections as well. The time you spend in here will seem like minutes, but it will take up much more time than that! read more

I come here occasionally to pick up some cheap technical books and to browse their science-fiction collection and used game collection. This is a good place to buy paperback novels because they are so cheap (3-4 dollars). Plus, they almost always carry classics because people tend to sell those most often-I've picked up Dune, Foundation series, LOTR and Neuromancer from here. I've seen non sci-fi classics as well. Their programming book selection is also not bad, and being half-priced, it will save you quite a bit, especially since these types of books can go as high as $50.00 or more. I can sometimes find better deals online, but the ones that I did buy from this store were cheapest at the time. Additionally they have used video games and PC games. The selection can vary wildly, depending on what's brought in, but I have seen some good sales on titles like Dawn of Discovery, Drakensang and STALKER. This location seems larger than the one in Westport, and usually has a better selection for me. read more

If you love books, you'll love this place! Half Price Books makes it inexpensive to own some really great books. My hubby and I come here regularly to rummage through the great selection. While most of the books are used, there are some brand spanking new ones to be found as well. The best part of shopping here is knowing that if you don't like a book, you can bring it back and get credit towards your next book. The clearance section is awesome as well. Even if you don't find something in clearance you want to read, you might find something that will make a fun yet awkward gag gift. Another cool thing? Vinyl! They have a small selection of used vinyl and interspersed throughout are some brand new records. Almost my entire collection of vinyl was stolen several years ago and I've been using Half Price Books to replenish some of it. Definitely sign up with Half Price Books online. A couple of times a year they send out coupons for 40-50% off your most expensive item. These are great to use on those coffee table books you otherwise wouldn't splurge on or maybe a double album. read more

I love this place. Sorry B&N but I'll go here before I go full price. I can usually find 75% of what I want and what I can't find, I can find on Amazon still cheaper than B&N. The staff is kind of hit or miss whether they're helpful or not but I've come at times when they are super busy. As far as selling books...meh. You'd be getting a little more than garage sale prices for your books so if you're going to put them in a garage sale anyways, you can get store credit instead of cash... Better place to buy than sell, definitely! I've gotten some books for $1 for older copies. They also have games and kid's stuff, stationery/journals, bookmarks, book lights, etc. As well as first editions and autographed copies towards the front of the store. read more

Ahhhh, what's not to love? Aisles and aisles of reasonably priced books, from bestsellers, hardbacks, paperbacks and older books! If you have seen the book in any aisle in the bookstore/Barnes and Noble, you have a great chance of finding it here and at bargain prices. Kindle and Nook, beware! The books are sorted out by category, and you can find many out of print books that you might be looking for. Calendars, Christmas cards, bookmarks, and movies all add to more bang for your buck. Staff is always helpful and friendly, which should be the norm, but isn't, so it stands out! read more

I've found some real bargains at Half Price Books but I find lower cost books on Amazon. I'd recommend the store for book or software shoppers. However, I found the store sadly lacking when I dropped off books to be sold to Half Price Books. I went to 2 different locations of this bookstore. At this location I bought a few things which is why I am reviewing this one. I like the store's idea, it kind of combines the pluses of both a used bookstore and a new bookstore. They have a pretty good selection and reasonable prices - both good selling points. Plus you can bring in your books/CDs/DVDs and sell/trade them to buy MORE. If I lived in KC I could see going to this place for all of my book needs. read more

This place has been remodeled. Huge music, video & book section. My favorite things: they bought all of my books, I found a rare book to swap for, good stationary section, friendly and cool employees. Prices are reasonable to very reasonable, this is definitely a place to hang out and shop at least once per month. It's also large enough the stock moves fast and they get tons of new stuff all of the time. read more
