Kids climbing, laughing, and embracing each one with an eye of awe. I learned about the author of story My Fathers Dragon and it was fascinating. So much so I went to the bookshop to buy a copy, along with other books and prints. And that's where such a beautiful experience went south. When I asked the two girls working in the shop about a book and a limited-series print, they were incredibly curt with me. They condescendingly told me I had already passed the book, making me feel like I had done something wrong. It instantly reminded me of when your mom gets frustrated with you simply because you don't know the answer to a question you're asking. It's a shame that such a breathtaking museum experience was bookended by such dismissive customer service in the retail shop. This museum is exceptional! I felt like a kid again seeing my favorite storybooks come to life! Every single nook and cranny of this space was well thought out and artistically crafted. It was nice to have places for the kids to climb and explore. And there were also spaces to rest and be quiet. I like that each book was unique on display so it wasn't the same old thing over and over again. What I really loved was that they have multiple copies of each book represented in said section. So the ones we hadn't read and were interested in, we were able to discover like The Funny Thing and The Fire Cat. And ones we were aware if were fun to read while exploring like Goodnight Moon (my absolute favorite part), Babar, Frog and Toad, and No, David! The bus ride is a must; so creative and heart warming. We didn't purchase tickets for The Three Robbers experience, but peeking inside I wish we had, it looks great. The docents and volunteers were all knowledgeable of the books. And they were very kind when needing to remind kids of the museum rules. If I lived here I would by an annual membership for sure. The Rabbit hOle is a fantastic experience for all ages! The 21+ only nights are great if you don't have children to entertain (the entry price even includes a an alcoholic beverage that you can carry with you in the museum)! You truly feel like you are stepping into a storybook. There were a lot of classic favorites that I remember from my childhood -- like the Goodnight Moon room that you can walk around with your shoes off! But there were some new stories I had never experienced before -- like the Three Robbers neon special exhibit. There's plenty to explore! Expect to crawl around and climb! My summary of this museum is: about halfway through I realized it's basically a selfie spot for kids. When my family and I started stalking this business on Instagram in hopes of taking a day trip to visit, I was enamored by the cool displays! We couldn't wait to get inside and interact with our favorite stories and discover new ones. I really appreciated that there was a big variety in good literature represented here- It felt like there was something for all ages and across varying demographic lines. However, my outlying disappointment is just that I was hoping for a little bit more of an interactive nature. Don't get me wrong, the little nooks and crannies and hidden tunnels are tons of fun, but I think I was expecting more hands-on play to be incorporated with each story. Whether that's sensory bins for a few stories with their key props, or live readings every now and then throughout the museum, or even little crafts to do along the way. All in all, I'm glad we went, and I truly want to root for this museum concept idea, but I'm not sure it will be worth it for us to return for awhile. It DID look like part of the upstairs was still under construction, so I'm hopeful that they'll learn and add as they go, and we'd be eager to see more fun added. read more

This is a fun place for adults and children whom enjoy reading and share the love for the stories in these books. We loved our visit to the Rabbit Hole with our 1.5 year old and 3 year old. It is such a beautiful museum, lots of photo opportunities. My son's favorite book is "Last Stop on Market Street" so he loved the interactive bus you could ride for that exhibit. I think older kids would even appreciate it more, even as an adult I wanted to stop and read the books/buy the classics to read at home! There are so many cute reading books set up with copies of the books in the exhibit for you to sit down and read with your children which I loved. There is also an attached book store. Recommend buying tickets online ahead of time. Street parking was easy on a weekend morning. read more

Wow! Really enjoyed our first Rabbit Hole run. Different than we expected, in a good way. The kids (of course) had a great time and actually read a few books. Baba (grandpa), a retired English teacher fondly remembered several of the stories. We (the parents and adults) remembered being read to and had our memory jogged by two of the stories (Frog and Toad and Blueberries for Sal). There's a LOT going on to keep the young ones busy for 1-2 hours. All book sets are imaginative and well-spaced out so you can really soak one in before you move on to the next. Every great adventure has a beginning. Here - in an unassuming building in an assuming part of town - you can open a door and walk into The Storybook Land. This land is full of fantastic places - We walked to where the sidewalk ends. We saw Curious George and the Man with the Yellow Hat. We saw Madeline, Katy No-Pocket, and the Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig, too. Then we ended they day watching the cow jump over the moon. There is a lot to see and experience - we were here almost three hours. Reading is highly encouraged. All ages are welcome. read more

This may be one of the most unique places I've ever been. The Rabbit Hole brings children's stories to life with massive recreations and interactive experiences for kids and parents alike. The spot reminds me a lot of the City Museum in Saint Louis with its fun ways kids can play but this place felt more comfortable and way cleaner. You start your experience by walking down into a recreation of a sunken cave that you have to walk around to get to the main desk. Before you go down you should take a peak at the toilet. I know that sounds weird but trust me. The coolest thing about the Rabbit Hole was how it took so much creativity to make it all possible. The first major room you walk into looks like a hobbit hole and is super immersive. In the main room, you can tell the people behind this great spot took a lot of time to perfect their location. One thing you can't miss about this location is the bus ride. It's relatively new and has a really cool experience where you sit down in a small bus across from some children's book characters and then the narrator and characters act out the story. There's a screen simulating the outside of the bus and it's just a really cool experience. The book store is also a really great place to find books. There's a good range of books for kids of all ages and even a pretty big section of children's books in Spanish. I think it's smart to get your ticket before coming. Also, there is street parking around the business and a larger parking lot nearby. read more

The Rabbit hOle has been getting attention from everywhere these days and for good reason. It's essentially a one of a kind artist focused children's museum that brings stories to life for those young and young at heart. Now into the nitty gritty. I've been anxiously awaiting the opening of The Rabbit hOle for about five years. In 2019 when I was very pregnant I was fortunate to tour the space as it was under construction with a tour group. The tour ended with a ride on a bus from "Last Stop on Market Street" which was transformative, and as someone who has worked in the museum industry, totally awe inspiring for what this place could be. I've been on the hunt for more immersive museum experiences that can breach education and entertainment for over a decade, so to see someone taking this creative route right in my own backyard was thrilling to say the least. Of course soon after this tour covid happened and everything in the world was delayed. I've been watching from the sidelines though, cheering them on, waiting for this dream to become a reality. So, when I saw they were opening I waited about a week or so to avoid massive crowds, and then made my way there with my four year old, and husband on a Thursday (our kiddo's birthday). Our daughter had no idea what we were doing, and it took some prodding to get her excited for someplace new, but once she saw the pink rabbit feet leading our path to the entrance she was hooked. Once inside you check-in, pay ($16 per person), and then into the rabbit hole you descend. It might be lame but looking back, while the whole thing is fantastic, the dramatic entrance into the museum is a standout experience. You are transformed from a museum lobby into a magical story world and each of us really enjoyed that aspect of it. When you emerge into the core of the museum it's filled with tons of stories you'll remember from your childhood. Think Frog and Toad, Madeline, Caps for Sale etc. It was so fun to watch our daughter run around, explore, and learn more about books that were new to her. What was even more impressive was seeing how many young kids were actually sitting down and reading with their parents or grandparents. It did something that I think is very hard to do in the museum space - bridge that gap between fun, learning. Overall, after about two hours we had to pry our daughter away and ended up applying that day's admission to a membership. There is still a second floor they are working on, which will include that crazy cool bus I wrote about above, and a cafe that I've been told might eventually feature some food from children's literature. I know this is a long review, but this place is a slam dunk for kids and for KC. I'm so glad it's here, and I hope it continues to inspire kiddos and their families for generations to come. read more

We visited the Rabbit hOle while in Kansas City for a family vacation and had the most wonderful time! We weren't sure what to expect, but this spot definitely surpassed our expectations and our kiddos (4&6 yo boys) had a blast. You enter via the rabbit hole, i.e. a curvy rock tunnel with little nooks and crannies to explore, and it leads to a colorful storybook wonderland! I was so impressed by the artistry and interactive elements in each installation. They also lay the corresponding books around each installation so that you can sit and read the stories if you wish (or if your kiddos will allow, ha!). Our squirmy boys wanted to keep exploring. Make sure to visit the bookstore at the end because that is where the "Goodnight Moon" room is located and it is amazing. Also pro tip: There is a bus experience at the end that needs a "ticket" (complimentary) for entry and there can be a wait, so I recommend having someone go up and get a ticket for your group as soon as you enter the storybook wonderland. It looks like they are building even more fun so we will absolutely go again on our next visit. This was the perfect way to spend a rainy KC afternoon with kiddos! read more

Let me be the first (on Yelp at least) to welcome this epic addition to Kansas City! The Rabbit hOle is an "immersive literary wonderland" and I couldn't sum it up any better. From the minute you walk in, you'll find yourself diving into the rabbit hole, and following a mini-cave network until you find yourself immersed in stories; some are fresh from bedtime the night before, and some touch on that nostalgic nerve. While they're continuing to add to it, and it'll eventually be three stories, it's worth the price of admission now if you have kids that enjoy books and love to run around... okay so all kids. We loved the Frog & Toad area, a favorite among my kids although I have to say they were quite disappointed that the characters themselves were nowhere to be found. An aid told us they would be there as they add on. There's a fire pole to slide down, a Curious George area coming soon, Blueberries for Sal, Madeline (in two straight lines), Shel Silverstein areas, Strega Nona.. really too many to even recall, you'll just have to see for yourselves. Oh and don't forgot the Goodnight Moon room attached to the bookstore/library! I'm excited to see what kind of programming they add in here to keep us coming back. Additionally, there will be a cafe and several other things to come it sounds like which will be welcome (we walked down to Iron District nearby for lunch, but honestly it's not a great walk with big trucks and narrow, disappearing sidewalks.) You can currently get time slots and it's $16 per person. We opted to put our daily cost towards an annual membership for our family of four, because if we go two more times it pays for itself. I can promise we will go more than that, it's so much fun. Also, parking is abundant and just outside the area. This place just opened, so I expect the signage when arriving to continue to improve because it's slightly tricky to find if you don't know NKC very well. All in all, this place is a homerun, their ability to keep kids connected to books in such an interactive way is so impressive. My prediction is you'll hear about this on national outlets in the weeks and months to come! read more

I finally got a chance to stop in at the Rabbit Hole during a quick visit to KC. I was BLOWN AWAY by all of the attention to detail that has been put into each and every inch of this place. The art and craftsmanship truly is bursting is talent. I could've spent the entire day there, and still would've found new things during my next visit! It was so heartwarming to see kids reading books and playing together. Also, watching family's sit down and read together was something we rarely see these days. This place was amazing! I read about the Rabbit Hole before our family's spring break trip this week and we had to add it to the itinerary. We are so glad we did! Everyone loved it, even our 15 year old daughter! I love that it is a bit of a hidden gem in in an industrial area. The whimsy starts out in the parking lot and only increases as you find the entrance and start ti explore the wonders inside. The artists behind this project did an amazing job. So many classic books have been brought to life. It is equal parts storybook museum, playground, book store, library and selfie museum. Everyone we saw was having so much fun. And it's definitely a hit with the grandparent crowd! This is a must visit of you're in the KC area with kids of any age. And there's more to come! When your kid prefers this place over the Disney exhibit at union station you know you've found something special. You' ll hear just as many "this place is so cool" from parents as you will kids. This parent included. The rabbit hole brings boos to life, with scented from many different books that are very interactive. Touching is not frowned upon, but encouraged. Numerous copies of each book are located next to each exhibit. I don't want to give away too much so I'll refrain from much more description. Admission fee was very reasonable. The staff were very friendly. Parking was also a breeze. It's a bit of a drive from downtown but a must for any kid, local or tourist. read more

Accidentally purchased an extra ticket online because of their dumb site and the way it defaults to a time and they refused to refund though we went before that entry time and asked. Despite the timed entry, it was a 40 minute additional wait for one of the interactive "bus ride." There's a whole art exhibit that is hands off which is weird considering the rest of the space is very hands on. At $16 a pop, there are better attractions in KC. read more

There are books you can read along the way and little nooks to sit and read! A great way to instill a love of reading to littles! The workers there were really friendly. There's a cafe that sells book inspired foods and a bookstore at the end. It's just all so creative! Tickets are $16 per person for 3 year olds and older. Something to note- strollers are not allowed. Two of my littles can walk, but it was kind of a lot walking for my 1.5 year old, so I had to carry her a bit. For the price, I wish there were more activities for littles throughout the exhibit. There were some, but it felt more like just looking at the amazing art/ sculptures. There was a tiger carousel but they are waiting for parts, so it wasn't working yet. I also wish there were more cozier places to read that were out of the way.
