The paragraph below, I lifted from a different source which I found to be informative. The Texas Heroes Monument is located in Galveston, Texas, and was commissioned by Henry Rosenberg to commemorate the brave people who fought during the Texas Revolution. The monument was built by New England Granite Works using Concord, New Hampshire, granite and bronze. The total cost was $50,000, and it was shipped before June 4, 1899. The sculptor of the monument was Louis Amateis. It is located at the intersection of Broadway and Rosenberg Avenue. It was unveiled on April 22, 1900.

The house has survived a number of storms and hurricanes but was actually damaged the most by the 1947 chemical explosion. This beautiful church stands tall and is one of the more historical churches on Galveston Island…read more There is a small parking lot and there is street parking on neighboring streets. The larger marker reads, "Trustees of the Methodist Church purchased this lot in 1848 as a worship site for Black slaves. Meetings were held outdoors until a building was erected in 1863. At the end of the Civil War (1865), ownership of the property was transferred to the recently-freed Blacks, who organized the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Texas. It was later named in honor of the Rev. Houston Reedy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who served as the first pastor. The church survived several natural disasters, beginning in 1875, when the sanctuary was damaged in a storm. It was destroyed in 1885 by a fire that burned a large area of the city. Finished in 1887, the present structure was restored after the destructive hurricane of 1900 and repaired again in 1947 and 1957. More than 30 ministers have served the congregation including the Rev. J.E. Edwards, the Rev. Josiah Armstrong, the Rev. M.D. Moody, The Rev. W.R. Beamer, the Rev Louis H. Reynolds, the Rev. A.I. Henley, the Rev. R.C. Walker, the Rev. Erford Barker, the Rev. C.B. Bryant, and The Rev. Sylvester I. Green. Many of Galveston's prominent Black citizens have been members of Reedy Chapel A.M.E. Church. Today the fellowship includes several descendants of the original founders." The building was secured when I was here on a weekday evening, so I was unable to see the interior. June 8, 2021 One of…read morethe many historical churches on the island. It's very unique because it's an African "Methodist/Episcopal" church! A 2-for one...which I've never known of that before. Church dates back to 1848 when black slaves were given the land where the church resides. After slavery ended in Texas this church acted as a school educating freed men/women. It endured the storm of 1900 but the original building was destroyed in a fire in 1885. Point of reference Church is off Broadway between 20-21st and next door to RCC resale FYI Every year (to date) people celebrate Juneteenth here

Sitting in the middle of Broadway at the intersection of 23rd St. also known as Tremont Street…read moreyou'll find this World War II memorial. It basically lists those who lived in the Galveston County area who lost their lives during the war. Also accompanying this memorial are two benches that sit out front dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Korean conflict. Located directly across the street is a monument to the 10 Commandments that was constructed in 1957.

The bridges were replaced/updated between 2006 and 2008. This is the only way (other than the Galveston/Point Bolivar Ferry) to reach Galveston. There is no toll to cross the Causeway. Beautiful and cleverly designed, this bridge spans the Houston Ship Channel and joins Baytown and La Porte. It is named for the editor of the Baytown Sun, a local newspaper from 1950 to 1974. It is the longest cable-stayed bridge in Texas. The bridge replaces the Baytown Tunnel that was removed in 1999. There is no toll to cross the bridge. 7/4/2019 One FUNKY…read moreOLE bridge. This bridge STINKS! This bridge smells straight like raw anything. Sometimes it smells like snot, stale pork rinds, burnt hair, luke (however no one else knows the meaning of that), dirty socks though I know all it is, is pollution & chemicals that's offseting it. I'm always driving across this bridge and often have to hold my breath while driving across. The odor is that bad. You'll use this bridge connecting Baytown, to Mont Belvieu and Dayton. I drove across it every morning at 4 am to go to work. 5 years later, the smell has dissipated one day and back another day. Accidents occur on this bridge typically because cars in the far right lane don't merge over until the last minute to rush to meet their exit.

It's the oldest commercial building in Galveston. It was owned by the Firm of William Hendley & Co…read more It looks like one big building from the outside, but it's actually 4 buildings that are binded together. It's probably more known for its Greek-Revival architectural style. It was used as a headquarters for both the Union & Confederate Army during the Civil War. There was an enemy look-out point at the top of this 3-story building that was used by both sides. Yes, this part of Texas appears to be flatter than Florida. Is that even possible? It was used as a temporary morgue after the Great Storm. That may be why it's a stop on Galveston ghost tours. Yes, it's supposedly haunted. The building currently houses businesses such as the Hendley Market and Hendley Wine Co. The Galveston Historical Foundation's office is also at this location. It's not the most beautiful looking building on The Strand, but it is part of Galveston's local history that we definitely noticed while exploring this historic area. It's worth a stop if you happen to be walking past it.

The marker reads, "The commercial house of William Hendley & Co. was established in 1845 by William Hendley (1798-1873), his brother Joseph J. Hendley (d. 1887), John L. Sleight (1810-73), and Phillip Gildersleeve (1819-53). At the same time, they started the Texas and New York Packet Line with the firm of Brower and Neilson of New York, using a fleet of fast sailing ships. As brigs were withdrawn, the Hendleys and J.H. Brower built more suitable vessels of greater capacity and lighter draft. The firm spent $320,100 in just over ten years to lead in the growth of Galveston's maritime commerce. "The company had this three-story Greek revival commercial row built in 1855-58. It is comprised of four buildings, originally similar on the interior. Separated by fire walls, they share a uniform brick facade. The columns, cornices, and ornamentation are made of granite. "The row's cupola, since removed, served as a lookout post for both Confederate and Federal forces during the Civil War. After the war, Hendley's mercantile firm returned to the block. The row later housed offices of the First National Bank of Galveston, Col. William Moody, the US Corps of Engineers, the retail firm of Greenleve, Block & Co., and other businesses.
