We've been to the Rosenberg Library a couple of times over the past 10 years, during the time that my son has been at UTMB. Several years ago there was a great display on the history of Galveston, complete with a ship's steering wheel and probably a short term limited display of some quilts but both of these displays are no longer here. We were told they are doing some remodeling. We interacted with the security guard asking him some questions and he was so helpful! We stopped in to the Reading room and looked at some fun magazines! This historical building is so cool- literally and figuratively! It's a great place to escape the heat and humidity outside as well as to enjoy the beautiful architecture and displays. And it's free to enter with free parking! Readers are leaders!

I enjoyed my visit to this library. Their book sale was great also. I found about a dozen Mo Willems books for my granddaughter.

It was nicely laid out and you could walk up and buy a ticket with a self guided audio tour of the place that included historical tid bits about the family and what was happening in the area at the time they lived in it. They apparently have private tours of the upstairs/attic areas but those you have to book and pay for in advance. I enjoyed the audio tour and even bought a few items at the quite spacious gift store! At times I felt like I was the only one in the house because it was probably a non tourist heavy day. You can easily park on the street and walk in to buy a ticket the day of...well at least on the day I was there!

This should really be called the Gresham house bc that is focus of the guided tour. Being called…read morethe Bishop's Palace, we thought we would learn about this building's use as the Bishop's Palace. Instead we learn almost exclusively about the Gresham family and how the house was before the Bishop lived there. The stained glass of St Therese of Lisieux and the chapel room are beautiful, but you can see that on the self guided tour. You won't hear much about them at all from the guided tour. They had no idea why the bishop chose this saint for the glass, and only explained that it was added after the previous glass blew out. When in the chapel, the discussion is about what it looked like before the bishop lived there. It seems that the beautiful decorations in the chapel and its use are important and likely more entertaining than knowing a daughter lived there and had some stuff in the room. Again, if you want to hear about the Gresham family, then this is a good tour for you. If you want to hear about what the Bishop's time was like here, you'll be out of luck. I guess they continue to use the name Bishop's Palace as a bait and switch to get attendance bc this really should be called the Gresham House.

In highschool I learned to scuba dive and immediately began searching for any body of water deep enough to submerge. After highschool I wanted nothing to do with college but,I'd promised my grandmother. The only thing that truly interested me was the ocean. So after much research on schools offering such courses of study,I landed on Texas A&M Moody College of Marine Science. I didn't even visit. Just applied, was accepted and moved to Galveston. It's still a small campus but power packed. The hard earned reputation of being an excellent university extends to this campus located on an island adjacent to Galveston proper. I could not have asked for a better learning experience or environment to learn in. My physics professor went on to become President of The entire Texas A&M system if this gives an idea of the quality there . Fantastic School Note: Maria W. Gave a highly critical and unwarranted First review, based on many assumptions and her own imagined bias. I have ask the Yelp Powers that be to remove this as it's not in the Yelp spirit. * I just received an email Yelp decided not to remove this shitty review?

If you're an Aggie freak and want a more personal campus than the main location in College Station,…read morecome here. But the catch is, since it's located on its own island, all of the majors are centered around guess what marine life. How nice is that? So if you plan on becoming a doctor or anything in the medical field, you'll need to major in marine biology or sciences. If your interested in engineering, they have marine engineering. And the list goes on... The school caters most to freshmen as you can as if you were a transfer student, you could only transfer in 24 credits and most of them have to be liberal arts, no sciences. Yippee!! Also, the campus is dull, tiny, and looks and feels raggedy. I'm sure Raggedy Ann and Andy would love to call this their new home. No greenery, scenery, or beautiful art nor architecture. Just construction and Galveston beach. This university is home to more male residents than females. The same traditions they hold high at TA&M main is the exact same as this location and they claim the Corpus Christi, Commerce, West Texas, Kingsville, Prairie View, Tarleton, Central Texas, and etc isn't the same. Even the games, all that the same. Well, maybe not you may get more diversity in the student body than at the main campus. The campus tour was average Abe, I wouldn't wanna tour it anymore. As the building looked dull and lifeless. With tuition being so high, the least they can do is make the campus look more attractive. Even the visitor centre looked and felt dirty, old, and antiquity. Our tour guide was average, even though he was a senior he acted as if he didn't know much about the campus. Lots of uhs and asked a question. Oh yeah, this is strictly a dry campus. No one can have alcohol, not even if you are above the drinking age and not freshmen. I'm so glad I'm not into living the Aggie's dream in order survive on this earth.

I paid for my second semester but once I asked for a refund they denied me I spoke with the dean of the university and still lead me with no help I payed for a 2nd semester that was not given there a scam. Half of the things we were supposed to be learning was missing if you ask the professor for something needed to learn he would say someone stole it. The marker reads, "In 1871, twelve men formed the Galveston Historical Society to preserve the history of Texas by collecting important documents. The group and its archive grew, but in 1880, the secretary died, telling no one where to find the collection. In 1885, the Society found it and placed it in the care of Phillip C. Tucker, Jr., and his son. Interest in the group waned, but in 1894, new energy led to its reorganization as the Texas Historical Society. New members included Rabbi Henry Cohen and Elbridge G. Littlejohn, as well as several women. They began storing the collection, most of which had been salvaged after Galveston's tragic 1900 storm, at the Rosenberg Library in 1906. In 1931, they gave the library full ownership. "After several inactive years, the Society was resurrected in 1942 under its old name and turned to preserving historic landmarks, publishing a booklet in 1951 of the island's significant homes. In 1954, one of those homes, the 1830s Williams-Tucker House, was threatened. The Society, unable by its charter to acquire property, formed a new group, the Galveston Historical Foundation, which purchased the home and restored it. In 1958, the two groups merged as the Galveston Historical Foundation. Over the next 50 years, the group saved buildings and helped establish historic districts, including The Strand, one of the largest extant Victorian business districts in the South. "After celebrating its 130th year in 2001, the nationally acclaimed foundation continues its leadership role in revitalization, museum operation, education, property management and preservation advocacy." This is marker number 13717 and it was erected in 2006 by the Texas Historical Commission. Check it out when you're in Galveston. [Review 872 of 2024 - 627 in Texas - 21901 overall]
