Richard's wealth of knowledge is phenomenal. This was such a wonderful and fun experience. If you schedule a tour you need at least 2.5 hours. We were actually there for 3.5 hours and it was worth every minute. Thanks, Richard, for imparting your love for olives. Can't wait to return with friends. We planned a trip to see his farm on the last day of our trip. I sadly can't drink right now, so what else is there to do outside of family activities and wineries? Olive oil farming! It was a great way to end our time on the central coast. Richard started by telling us about his story of becoming the Olive oil man. He helped us learn about Olive trees (we had brought a branch from our tree), the olives themselves, and the milling process. He brought us into his tasting room, and we tried various oils and a vinegar, as wells as a few flavor pairings. We really have a new appreciation for not only olives, Olive oils, and farming, but Richard and smaller, non-commercial farmers. Every bottle is a labor of love crafted by him, his wife, and even his dog. The visit felt like we had visited an uncle, and we did buy oils (he definitely doesn't ask you to, but after tasting then and knowing the process, you definitely want to.) We were going to send some as gifts, but it's hard to appreciate something as much unless you've experienced it. We experienced the San Miguel Olive Farm and we're better for it. Thanks again Richard! We definitely will try to come up one October to experience the harvesting to complete the journey.

A valuable source of food in a town that suffers from a food desert…read more While they have a decent assortment of basic food choices in this out of the way immigrant town, it is far from a supermarket. While they thankfully sell gallons of milk, dozens of eggs, there is little decent protein, and alot of what is offered is highly processed. Some other things in the store can be bargains. I picked up about two dozen nice basic flowerpots that were on clearance, which was a great deal...and came out to be 25 cents to 1-2 dollars each. The cashier was very nice, and this out of the way store, while basic, surely helps this town.

The green is definitely roasted green pepper (and tomatillo?) as you can see the little flecks of tender charring in it. Yum, I think I'll get some today. When the stagecoach days ended, and the days of the automobile began, the new owners installed a "visible" gas pump, and it served as an important rest stop on U.S. 101. In fact, the driveway you go down is actually a SEGMENT of the ORIGINAL U.S. 101 roadway ITSELF! Not to be missed if you are in the area! Go there to see the history of travel before freeways.

The Friends of the Adobe are some committed historians to have done such a fine job in putting this place back together and collecting the artifacts to fill the museum. I cam through a couple months ago and the place was being put back together after some major building re-enforcement's, I spoke with a curator and was told of the once a year event Caledonia Day. I Came back for Caledonia Day, a late September event, and found the place fully back together, with the museum in good shape and the gift store packed, and lots of different groups supporting the events annual whoop de do. It included dutch oven cook off, old time engines, a small car show, ice cream. BBQ and more. Now back to the Adobe and grounds. There is an upstairs and ground level to the museum. It has many historical photos, labelled well, and even a mammoth tusk discovered nearby in 1969 WOW. The upstairs is a historical display of life in an earlier time. For those interested in the early California History it is a good display. The Rios Caledonia Adobe is California Historical Landmark No. 936. There is a very nice library and historical reference building that is available for researchers of California History.

Clearly, the universe had plans. But honestly, what impressed me most about Riverstar Vineyards wasn't just the wine -- it was the family behind it. Learning how each member contributes their own talents to the winery made the entire experience feel wonderfully genuine, collaborative, and refreshingly personal. There's something very special about businesses where you can still feel the people behind the vision. I also loved learning more about the Pleasant Valley Wine Trail collective itself... wineries supporting one another while also helping fund local agricultural scholarships and education efforts together. That kind of community spirit is exactly what makes Paso Robles wine country feel different. Warm people, beautiful wines, and a genuinely lovely evening all around. And yes... The Ríos-Caledonia Adobe is a historic adobe house built in 1835 in San Miguel, California. The…read moreRíos-Caledonia Adobe is open to the public as a house museum and library. The original building was made of adobe, had a roof of hand-made tiles, and used strips of rawhide to tie the pine rafters in place. It is located directly across the street from Mission San Miguel Arcángel. It has had many different owners, and the property has been a a stagecoach stop with a hotel and tavern, as well as an elementary school and many other businesses. In 1923, the property was purchased as a tourist attraction, and the new owner added the gift shop. The County of San Luis Obispo purchased it in 1964 as the adobe had fallen into disrepair. In 1968, the Friends of the Adobes formed to preserve and restore the adobe. The site now operates as a county park with a history research library, museum, and gift shop. There are plenty of trees to enjoy a picnic or an outing. The Ríos-Caledonia Adobe is right off the freeway, and admission is free.
