Unfortunately I find the shop can sometimes be a little dirty and the service not amazing. This experience has been fairly typical of visits into W H Smiths around the country though, so is not anything unique about the Berkhamsted branch. There's not a lot you can buy in W H Smith that you can't get elsewhere, with more choice, but the magazine section is large, which is probably the highlight of the store.

The whole shop front has a huge stand with all the foreign newspapers from allover the world. The owners say they are catering to a huge foreign student body and with the contempary dance school nearby and the Hilton Hotel passing trade does speak in many ways. The husband and wife team running the shop are are both charming and chatty . With a couple of cafes on the doorstep and outdoor seating available - this is an ideal location to read up on all you may be missing or happy to miss!

You can also buy your Oyster cards here or get a top up in the mornings. A word of warning though, there's usually huge queue on a Monday morning so either get it the night before or be prepared for a long wait - this has often made me late for work. I love this little newsagent's... it's always been really handy when passing through Clapham Junction.

One of the largest markets in the South East it's so popular that they actually run coach trips here! The market is mixed and contains stalls ranging from clothing through meat, vegetables through CDs. Some stalls, such as the CD stall outside Debenhams or Peter the Pleater's blind stall have been there for years. Others are newer. The market stands on a cobbled area and is fringed by the shops and, more recently, some living accommodation. The ancient St Edwards church provides a focal point and gives the whole area a rather historic feel. Market days are Wednesday, Friday and Saturday with the market place being used for car parking outside these times. Expect the market to be operational before 9am and to close up around 4pm or later if trade is good. There's an Eastend buzz about the place but it's not what it used to be!

Sometimes, however, 99p stores, no matter how cheap they are are just a load of crap - like a cesspool. (Let's dub this the review of bad humor and see how far I can carry it.) This store, happily, did not disappoint just like a good dead baby joke (I actually abhor those). What kind of things did they have there? Biscuits, soups, cereals, tea, coffee, toiletries, socks, toys, S&M paraphernalia, brooms, stationary, unidentified flying objects filled with strange little creatures and more. All for 99 pence a pop or less. This is an ideal place to go for snacks and household items if your looking to stretch your pound like the lines on the stomach of a woman pregnant with triplets.

The shop is really crazy, small with loads of old fashioned bits and bobs. It smells musty but appealing. The family who own it clearly never leave the place. And there are at least 4 generations in there, all working together at the tills. It is really sweet, I love familyish things and this is one of those rare examples in London where a little independant buisness is still strong on its feet. I don't think this is just because of our visits during Halloween. As a video shop they do have a big selection of stuff and good prices, I would go to them over blockbusters any day!

You need this shop in your life! It sells everything. Im sure if you went in asking for an Uzi 9mm and a packet of explosives, the helpful lady would just pop out back and get them for you. It also rents DVDs cheaply. In fact so cheaply its suspicious the latest titles as well.
