As the owners of a newer local lawn maintenance and landscaping business serving the Bayville and Forked River area, we were disappointed by our experience at Hammett's Landscaping & Garden Center yesterday. We visited the garden center to purchase trees, shrubs, and flowers for a customer project and, during checkout, asked whether they offered a contractor discount. We were then asked to provide proof that we owned a landscaping business. While my husband was wearing a company shirt, we were asked whether we had a business credit card, business paperwork, or company branding on our truck. We explained that we do have a business credit card, but do not carry our business registration paperwork in our vehicle. We also explained that while our daily-driver truck is not wrapped, our business trailer is fully branded and was on the job site. The employee then commented that my husband could have borrowed someone else's shirt and credit card and stated that "everyone wants to be a landscaper." She insisted that a vehicle with business logos on the side was required and concluded the conversation by patting me on the arm and saying, "Next time bring your paperwork and we'll give you the discount." We completely understand a business needing to verify contractor status before offering discounted pricing. However, there is a respectful and professional way to do so. The implication that we were being dishonest in an attempt to save money was both unnecessary and insulting. As a local small business, we make every effort to support other local businesses whenever possible. We had hoped to establish a long-term relationship with Hammett's for future landscaping projects, but this interaction left us feeling unwelcome and undervalued. As a result, we will be sourcing materials for our upcoming projects from other local garden centers. Hammett's has a beautiful selection of products and clearly possesses extensive horticultural knowledge. Unfortunately, customer service and professionalism are equally important parts of the customer experience, and in this case, those qualities were lacking. If contractor verification is required, that's understandable. But customers should be treated with courtesy and respect throughout the process. read more

We've been loyal customers even though their prices are high, the selection is very good. Female owner has bern short tempered in the past but recent experience confirmed well never spend another nickel there. Husband bought a crepe Myrtle last summer. It flowered once and died. Went in there (after spending hundreds on mulch last week) and was snapped at that they don't guarantee anything. Very nasty about it. Good customer service would have been to at least offer 50% back towards a replacement. Nope. Hammett may know plants but they don't know anything about customer service. Buyer beware! read more

Was a loyal customer for years until I had a return. Bought too much fertilizer that was a stocking item in their store. Went to return the extra bag and got denied . The person at the counter , whom I dealt with for years , had the nerve to question me whether I even bought the fertilizer there or not . I pointed out that the unopened bag had their price written on it with a sharpie , just like all their other Jonathan green products to prove it came from their store . Well I was told that maybe I wrote that on the bag to get a return. What nonsense, I spent many thousands of dollars there through the years and this is how I'm treated? Never went back. read more

My family always supports small local businesses... but this time I wish I didn't. This is an adorable location with tons of plants and trees & garden items, however, it stops there. I ordered close to $1000. of Veneer stone, for my mailbox. Once the mailbox was complete, I had two boxes left over. The owner refused to take them back due to her greed. She said she didn't want to lose the sale! Keep in mind on my receipts and online it does not state anywhere that you cannot return veneer stone. The owner suggest I sell the item myself online or come up with another home project to use this leftover stone! WHAT? CRAZINESS at its finest! I was left no choice but to file a claim with the Better Business Bureau which the matter is now pending. Save your money and go to Home Depot or Lowe's we are not given a hard time for a simple return. read more

Unfortunately we had a horrible experience with this Garden Center! Bought 2 trees... were promised that they would be delivered, installed and staked. After full purchase and payment, we had to argue with the owners to fulfill our order as promised! I agree with the previous reviews when they say the owner blames the customer for all their mistakes. Very poor customer service... Save your money and go elsewhere! They are a rip-off! read more

A year ago we had Hammett's install a paver patio that mates up to a deck and paver walls. After ONLY ONE YEAR the pavers are sinking, at least one inch, and the paver walls are sinking and crooked. We live on a property with a bulkhead and things sink after 5 or 10 years, NOT ONE YEAR ! Everyone I have talked to says it seems to be a bad install, EXCEPT for Hammett, who takes no responsibility for the install ! I have been told I should have checked out Hammett's before having the work done . Too late for us.....YOU DO IT !!!! read more

I came here last week with my grandfather to get an estimate on some bushes and flowers for our front yard. We were greeted by a friendly staff member that was very knowledgeable about everything we wanted to know. Due to this time of year we didn't get to see all that Hammett's had to offer. This place is quite small but does have a good selection of plants, flowers, and stone. read more

I agree with all the others. The paver patio job I had done started to shift and sink after one season (1 Year). I had to fix it all on my own!! Unfortunately I had a horrible experience with the owner screaming at me because his employee made my flowerbed too large. He blamed me for not recognizing the difference of 5 square feet. I outlined the size of the flower bed and the owner created an estimate. The employee had to dig below the outline and somehow it was my fault that his employee made a mistake. I can't believe the owner blamed me and tried to coerce me into paying for the difference by screaming at me and asking me if I thought it was his fault! He was extremely belligerent and unprofessional, my advice is to find another landscaping company. Don't take your chances with this joke of a company. read more
