The stallholders are mostly friendly and keen to chat about their produce, and prices are reasonably compared to health food shops and similar. A great thing to support that adds to the traditional feel of the more independent aspects of Oxford shopping and makes the big town seem more like a local farming market.

And I wasn't disappointed. The market is exactly what you would want a medium to large sized market to be. Offering a huge range of locally sourced goods sold to you by the actual producers of the items, you can get most things you would need to stock up the fridge, freezer and cupboards (with a good amount of locally made crafty things too). It's in a pretty setting and has a lovely community feel to it. We managed to find parking in the small shopping area just up from St Mary's Row at around 9:15am, but parking could be a bit of a nightmare if you were getting here later. The square area offered braces of pheasants for £6, cheese, wine, condiments and artisan food products and the High Street area (which we hadn't realised was there until we were leaving - D'oh) offers more of a crafty element. We had a nice little poke around the stalls and chatted to many of the business owners about their products and they were more than happy to talk to us and advise where the items are made and the ingrediants that go into them. We got some lovely locally made fizzy red wine (Did you know there are vineyards in the Midlands?) for £10 a bottle, some hot sauce from Pip's and was very tempted by cakes and unusual scotch eggs... We are definitely planning to go back. If you haven't been, you must go. Get there early if you're planning to drive but the buses down to Moseley drop you off right in the thick of the action, do that might be the best idea.

I've been attending the market for over three years now, and I rarely miss a month. The stalls always draw me back when I'm needing a healthy variation to my diet, and the price range is perfect value for money. Specifically regarding the Beans & Leaves stall, which sells a wide range of both coffee beans and loose teas. Most of these infusions rarely reach the £4 mark for 100g, which results in more than enough tea for two for several months! The tea stall holder himself is a bubbly yam yam who'll immediately strike up a conversation. It's just a shame that his stall is on the windiest part of Moseley, meaning that a lot of his tea ends up at the other side of the market! But of course, on first visit, you'll want to sample everything. Whether this be jam, ostrich burgers, bakery, alcohol or cheese (in fact, I highly recommend the Warwickshire Truckle), there's literally something for everyone. I've also tried a range of unlikely produces which sometimes appear at the market, such as a piece of fruit called a quince, and a green tea cake, both equally as delicious as the other. She'd limited her trip there to a single day, leaving before sundown. I didn't ask whether she'd visited Oxford's Covered Market but most who come to Oxford seem destined to make a stop here. I mean: how often does one have the opportunity to go to a historic market hall dating back to 1774? In truth, Oxford's Covered Market was a bit less interesting than the market I'd enjoyed in Swansea, where the vendors and offerings were quirkier. But Oxford's has cute shops, lots of places to enjoy food and drink, and if you look up, some cool suspended Alice in Wonderland-themed art (Alice's creator and Alice herself hailed from Oxford). With all there is to see and do in Oxford, do give yourself more than a single day and during that time I'd recommend a visit to their historic Covered Market where I ran into the only other people I knew in Oxford. The diners were all young people and all were oriental with all attaching offal with chopsticks. Many of the kids were wearing their university gowns. As I passed by there was a whiff from some of their food so likely some of it is an acquired taste. I've had sheep's brains, various sweetbreads, fish eyes, heads and lips, chicken's feet, and duck's web but I find as I age I'm reverting back to what I grew up with. It's a closed in marketplace on ground level and there's no spare space. It could be a pickpocket heaven. They also have butcher's shops and they sell a lot of meat pies in the market. I enquired from a few sellers and the pie casing is now vegetable oil - based rather than lard to meet changing tastes. I decided against. It always surprises me for such a small island with some of the finest fish in the ocean around it that fish is not more in demand. If you are nearby it's sure worth an hour.

We don't make any profit and plough any surplice back into the next one to keep the cost to stallholders down. We have a mix of delicious food to eat there and then, to buy and take home, and a great bunch of local artists, crafters, makers and growers selling stuff to adorn you, your house and your garden. We are small and perfectly formed but growing well. At our summer 2014 market in August we had 27 stalls, a good footfall and a great atmosphere. Look out for our Christmas market in December.

JQ business Vee's deli are there with their great selection of cheeses that you can try before you buy and then there is the markets' own vegetable stall which occasionally sells carrots! More often than not I'll pick up some flowers and whatever vegetables I want with the Sunday roast the next day. Sometimes I'll pick up a homemade frozen meal or at the very least a dessert from the frozen food stall before checking out the delights from the huge Squisito hot food stand. Finally it's the essential dozen eggs from the meat guy, who has a 10 year old clever side-kick who can calculate in his head faster than I can with a calculator. If you're coming along, I'm usually there around 12, when occasionally they have live music so be sure to say 'hello.'

In fact, this is such a permanent and well loved fixture of the Cardiff local flavour, that even when the market is not in session, you'll find a series of fruit and vegetable sculptures in the same spot. These cross sections of cucumbers and apples can be looked through to see the grand Millennium Stadium beyond. If you're a fan of keeping your carbon footprint as small as possible, then this is the place for you. All of the products on sale here are very high quality and extremely local. This is a fantastic way to while away a Sunday afternoon. The only problem is that I'd like it to be larger with a better selection!

It was perfect for a lazy, sunny, Sunday. I have to admit I didn't end up buying much apart from bread and cakes, but they did have a huge selection of cheeses and deli style foods across the 30 odd stalls. It also has craft stores and flowers and really, really good coffee. This is probably not the place for people on a budget to do the weekly shop but a great place to pick up some really special ingredients and a fantastic way to spend an afternoon away from the city centre.
