Historic fort and trading post along the California, Oregon and Mormon trails. The fort takes up…read moremuch of the outdoor displays including parade grounds, officer quarters, commissary, etc. One area is dedicated to the Bridger family property who ran the Trading post. This area includes a well, ice house, wash house and other out buildings. Many of the buildings have plexi-glass at the doors and windows that you look in during our visit. We were able to enter the Commanding Officers home, Bachelor Officer Quarters, the Museum and the trading post. A wooden walkway or concrete pathways make the property mostly wheelchair accessible. The trading post is across grass, gravel and a wooden bridge. A couple of signs near the Bridger property have braille. We spent a couple of hours on property and could have spent more. All staff were friendly. Plenty of local and national history. Parking is a dirt lot. Three RV's were parked long way next to the concrete stops when we arrived while cars parked head-in. Entry is eight dollars non-resident plus 3% credit card fee. Four dollars for state residents.

The building itself inside is medium size (one room) but does have a good amount of displays. Quite a bit of history especially the Lincoln Highway, coal mining and John Wesley Powell's expedition to the Grand Canyon. Museum is FREE and situated downtown with shops within walking distance. If you have spare time, there is a place called "Expedition Park" which was the launching point for Powell's venture in 1869. The park itself is only about 1 mile (possibly closer) from the museum.

Sweetwater County museum in Green River, WY is another museum that I planned ahead to visit while…read morehanging out in Green River / Rock Springs, WY, while learning more about the history of the area. After visiting the one in Rock Springs, this one in Green River had one thing that the Rock Springs one didn't: a gift shop. The museum itself was FREE, which obviously you can't beat that price. The museum was small, but it had different stuff versus the Rock Springs one. Just different, but similar histories. Both museums had the Chinese worker massacre highlighted in both museums, which was unfortunate and sad, but that's how it was back then, and parts of it is happening now - in 2013, with illegal immigration in the United States. Located on the main drag on Flaming Gorge Way, they provide a private parking lot which was great. There were about 5 slots, but on a Friday afternoon going to a museum? Plenty of parking options. They are open from 10-6 daily, so I got in and had my fill. As mentioned before, the entire exhibit was limited and small, but plenty of exhibits that highlights the history of the area. The poignant exhibit of the Chinese massacre struck a cord, as I am Chinese too. Maybe its because the Chinese was brought in for cheap ass labor and the white unionized folks got angry and jealous that they were undercut somehow, which brought on this resentment and subsequent attack on these immigrants back in the 1800's. There were other parts of the museum that focused on the mining and the home life of the people who lived in Sweetwater County, which includes Green River and Rock Springs. The railroad and the Lincoln Hwy (I-80) was also displayed. Also, there were displays for the prehistoric man of how they may have lived way back when. Also there's also Native American exhibits as well. Compared to the Rock Springs museum, I would like to say that they provided a lot of everything to the table and each provide a nice historical representation. I have learned plenty during my trip so far to Green River and Rock Springs, Wyoming and hope you will too. The woman who was working at the gift shop was nice and welcoming. It was great to have visited here and soak it all in and immerse myself into history. Good times and good memories to be had. I must've spent a good hour before leaving. Thank you for being free though. I also left a donation before I left. Hope to come back sometime soon, when my travels permit me to do so. The gift shop sports various items that tells the history of Sweetwater county and its heroes, sights, and history. Mainly books and keepsakes that basically has a history or just apart of the area. They accept cash and the 2 major forms of plastic, so that's a great comfort. I didn't buy anything, but I feel fortunate to be able to visit and get reacquainted with my history again. Overall, recommended to go if you have a moment to spare and want to learn something. What you read in history class is exploded onto visual representations for all to remember and enjoy. It's great to smile and think that I remember this stuff from high school. I enjoyed coming here and hope you will too. It's great if you have the time on a lazy Friday or a long weekend to enjoy. Possibly a little too scary for some audiences-usually those that are shorter than a yardstick. The indoor area of the museum is very well done with lots of displays and exhibits that educate guests on the different pre-historic beings. There were far more than I could have named on my own with my basic "Land Before Time" dinosaur knowledge. Upstairs, you'll find rocks and gems, which is well done although maybe less interesting to some folks. However, take a peek at the dinner rocks-there's a whole display of rocks that are in the shape of food. I got a kick out of that. Outside, there's lots of wide open space with paths that wander throughout the trees. There are dinos dispersed throughout the property, and a few benches to sit on. Lots of the grounds were covered in weeds, which may have been what the dinosaurs preferred to eat. However, in modern day, it just looks unkempt. For a kiddo-or adult-that has a fascination with dinosaurs, this could be a fun place to spend an afternoon. For the rest of us, an hour or two is probably plenty.
