This was a great way to spend an afternoon in the dreary fall weather of Door County! No reservations are needed, and there is truly something for everyone. All of the prices are available up front, and you only pay the $5 admission per person if you decide to do a project. The owner "Boss Lady" gave us the rundown when we arrived, and couldn't have been more friendly and informational upon our arrival. There are a wide variety of projects to choose from amongst the different buildings, they give you a laminated map to help you keep track of what is what as it can be a bit overwhelming. If you are part of a larger group and want to split up, that's easily done as you use a small sheet to keep track of what projects you are working on. We split up between ceramics and wood signs, the latter is the basis for my review. There were two young lades in our barn, Cheyenne being the one that primarily assisted us. They were patient with us newbies and offered tips to get us going and throughout the project. The prices were fair for what we got and they weren't stingy with the paint when we needed more of it. The only reason I have to go four stars instead of five was that the staff isn't always attentive to newbies coming in the door. We actually saw a couple groups sit down and then leave because staff didn't come help them get started. A little more organization here would go a long way as we had to wait quite a bit to get our project going as well. read more

Arrived at 3:33, last project time is 3:30, they refused to accommodate. I'm not joking, 3 min past. Plus, we spent 3 min walking back and forth as they rerouted the enterence. So, thanks for that. How sad am I? Not very. They have the same ceramics every year. I have 6 snoopy banks at home. The kids spend 16 min painting, and then you end up making 3 more to keep them entertained. It's a $200- 250 day easily no matter who you are. That's almost a 4 hour boat rental! The real slow down is the lady who hands out the paint colors. She is slower than molasses. Unbearably slow making the experience slightly painful, hence the time limit I suppose. Terrible holiday hours. Check your calendar, no consistency. We come here out of total desperation for something to do. Save you money! The door has better things to offer than this. If you have 5 unicorn banks at home, go elsewhere or rent a jet ski. read more

We went to the Hands On Art Studio for their Friday Drunken Art Night (they brand it "Adult Art Night"). They have several barns/workshops with different categories of art projects in them. The night we went, we made unique designs using fragments of colored glass on clear templates (like bowls, platters and lawn ornaments). The process is: drink some wine, choose different glass pieces you like, glue those pieces to your template, drink more wine, think you are a genius artist, drink more wine, want to start all over again because you piece "sucks", drink yet more wine, panic at running out of time to fix your design because the studio is closing, drink more wine, then get into the backseat of the car contemplating your whole existence. Fun! You are going to want to go here earlier in your trip, so that your beautiful works have time to dry or be fired in a kiln; they take about a day to be ready for pick-up, which should give you time to talk yourself down off the ledge of ARTISTRY. All in, this is a good time. Plus, you get to take your pieces home with you and remember your vacation in a more personalized way than buying something in a shop. (Artist tip: work by yourself. Every single time we are in Door County, we have to go to Hands On. It used to be just painting little figurines, cups, plates etc. where they then get put in a kiln and you can pick up your projects the next day. Over the years they have expanded to glass making, metal making, throwing clay and more. Last time I took a metal flower petal and welded it all by myself into a beautiful lawn ornament, which if you purchased already made, you would pay upwards of $60. I made a stained glass hanging another time. Many times we will go to Hands On multiple times a week, it is always the highlight of our trip! read more

What's one to do on Black Friday in Door County? Well, Hands On is the place for entertainment and fun. I came here with my fam during one of their Adult Nights. It's pottery painting meets music meets BYOB. My parents had been here before a couple of Thanksgivings ago, but I missed it. This time around, I was determined not to miss out on the fun. I painted two medium sized bowls. My fam painted a gnome picking his nose and a Packer themed bowl. The bf painted a man sitting on a couch remote control holder. At the end of the night, the pieces are arranged for firing in one of their many kilns. They also ship them out if you leave Door County before your piece of art is ready. The remote control guys and bowls were delivered in about a week to us looking beautiful and shiny. While painting and relaxing, a local band played music and we were served pizza. Since I had some leftover pumpkin spice cake balls, I shared them with the group of pottery enthuaists. The owners loved the cake balls and were extremely helpful. It was such a laid back experience mixed with pottery and beer. My Dad and bf checked out the other converted barns which included glass blowing and metal working. My bf promised that next time, he'll do the metal working. I had a fun and memorable night at Hands On that I'm definitely returning. read more

This place is like my mothership. My husband and I attended a Friday "Adult Night" at the Hands on Art Studio on our vacation to Door County for Memorial Day weekend. Pulling up, the facility is reminiscent of a hippie commune (in the very best way possible): multiple barn-like buildings, quirky sculptures everywhere, a bunch of cars parked in the drive, and a silo that's been encrusted in multi-colored ceramic and glass tile. Of yeah, there's also a bunch of indoor-outdoor cats and friendly farm animals. Once you arrive, you wander around from building to building, petting animals along the way, until you find the type of project you'd like to work on. There's a barn for metal working projects, a jewelry making studio, a ceramics studio, and painting of all varieties. We decided to make a mosaic glass plate, because that's a medium that we've never considered trying before. Also, the Adult Night is BYOB (or wine, or liquor). You can also buy beer at the concessions stand, and the staff drinks as well. Getting loaded while making art has never been more fun. The staff at the Hands On is awesome. They all appear to truly enjoy being there, and will answer questions and help you as much as you need. They also know when to step back, and they don't try to over-direct you or stifle your creativity. My favorite part of the experience was the lack of rules at Hands On. Want to get up from your project to go pet the sheep out back? Fine. Want to deviate from all of the examples and create something totally unique that you dreamed up in a half-drunk stupor? Hey, it's your party, and the staff are happy to help. Carl, the guy that helped us with the glass projects, was truly a beautiful human being. Carl was an excellent coach who taught by example. He was great at explaining the technique for cutting glass and his teaching style made you feel confident that you could achieve your goal. He was very helpful and fun. The base cost is $7 per person, and the project cost varies depending mostly on size. I was pleasantly surprised that you can share a project, and that if you wanted to, you could probably get out the door spending no more than $15 on the project if economizing was important. In other words, it's not a huge scam to make you spend a bunch of money, and the projects are charged based on a flat-rate per size of item. (No add-ons for using the "good" materials). That said, if you want to make something really cool, it's probably going to run about $30-40 per project. Like I said though, you can share projects, so my husband and I spent about $55 on the whole experience, and made this awesome plate in honor of our demon cat, Wilbur (note the red eyes). At the very end of the night, we went up to the ceramics barn to watch free live music offered to all patrons as part of the $7 fee. What a way to end the night! Evil owners! Stay away! My wife and I took a welding class (if u want to call it that). They gave me leather gloves with 3 fingertips missing, an apron, and glasses that I struggled to see through. While welding (my first time) I burned my fingers badly. The instructor looked for SOY SAUCE of all things. None could b found. I was told to go to the main building across campus to ask for the first aid kit. While there I spoke to a woman who told me she was co-owner. When I asked her why there wasn't a first aid kit in the metals building, she proceeded to blame her part time college student / employee. Rather than owning it and moving on. I raised my voice to that and was told to leave the property. First aid was refused. I was not allowed to tell my wife. I was escorted to my car. When I called my wife, she grabbed our belongings to leave the studio. The woman met her at the door and my wife was then verbally assaulted. The lady (I don't really mean that) followed my wife to the street, yelling the whole way. When I read other reviewers negative postings I can see where they r coming from. Especially the one lady who wrote about the road rage in their company vehicle. These owners need to move away from such a peaceful area. THEY DON'T BELONG! read more

What a fun place! It was expensive, but our two kids had a blast. When we first arrived we took a tour of all the various studios before deciding what to do. Had the best time here on our annual Ladies Retreat. This will definitely become part of our annual trip--in fact, next year we're going to do more! I agree with some the single star reviews. We use to love going to Hands On, it was a "must do" on our annual trip to Door County. But in recent years, the prices have gone up, the customer service all but gone and replaced overall with a kind of nickel and dime greediness. Charging parents and family members to help their kids...as if we would leave young children alone. We found that the materials are incredibly scarce by early August as if they were already preparing for the end of the season. The same comment is given..."the shipment didn't arrive". First year maybe, but after several years, the pattern is obvious and insulting. I hope they get back to what they first started...their brand is now diminished. read more

My family loves this place. This is a unique art studio where the patrons are the artist! There is a little bit of everything for everyone, ceramics, painting, glass work, tie-die, welding and pottery wheel. We love the ceramics so much that we have never gotten around to trying any of the other art studios. It is reasonably priced, you buy a wrist band when you enter and select a piece to paint, the paints and firing are included in the price. The price can vary based on how large a ceramic piece you select. It is located on a small farm with out-buildings for all the various art studios. It is appropriate for children five and older - although I have seen younger children painting ceramics, obviously it is more work for the parent or guardian with a young child because you need to watch your child, it is a ceramics studio with many fragile items. There are college students available to help pour paint for your convenience and offer tips on achieving your best work of art. We have been here approximately five or six times - every trip to Door County includes a trip to "Hands On." If you go on a rainy day, go early because it can get very crowded and the staff will not rush anyone from the painting tables, you can take as long as you like, in fact the staff will encourage you to put at least four coats of paint on your ceramics. This is a unique, "must do" Door County adventure! read more

This is a paint-your-own-pottery studio that I absolutely fell in love with on my most recent trip to Door County! The studios themselves are actually in a converted barn. The top level is filled with tables and chairs for you to work at. The entire back wall is covered with different pieces you can paint, starting at around $3 a pop. The staff was wonderful and answered all of our stupid questions with a smile. When they found out we had planned to eat there (the kitchen was closed for renovations) they even made us a pizza because they felt bad. Friday nights are "Adult Nights", where you pay a $6 studio fee for the whole night plus whatever the price is for each piece that you paint. They pipe in music and encourage you to bring wine and beer to enjoy while you are painting. It was a ton of fun and this will surely be a destination for me to return to. read more

Mom and Dad: Wow!!!!!!! What a cool concept with the multi building art colony. This place has it all. Get creative, while having a little structured support if you want it, so not too risky for the apprehensive artist. It was such a special time with the kids. Love the quirky, whimsical vibe. Age 13 boy: I made a sword! I learned a lot and had lots of fun making the sword. (Mom insert....Dad's idea on the sword. Mom already has laid down the law that it may never come off the wall and may not go with him to college.) Age 9 girl: I painted a unicorn! You pay a $7 per person studio fee and pay for materials. Don't expect to get out of here for less than $30 per person but the experience is worth every $$. You can create tile mosaics, paint pottery, fuse glass, paint (spin and traditional) t-shirts and canvases, make jewelry, and have full access to the welding shop. The staff is friendly and accommodating. They let us assist our kids so we only paid $14 in studio fees ($7 per kid). Plan on picking up projects the next day but there are some that can be done in one day. We did two large tile mosaics (mirrors) and a canvas spin art for $155. read more

Love Hands On Art Studio! Everytime we make a trip to Door County, I always try to stop by and create some art... I had heard about Hands On a few years ago while reading a magazine on Door County and decided we must give it a shot. We went on "Adults Night" (Fridays..in the summer they have live music). We were welcomed by the two owners, given a tour, and were offered suggestions. You can do so much here- metal work, mosaics, pottery, glass fusion, jewelry, etc. The first time we did glass fusion- and since then we've done 'spin art', and mosaics. It's so fun here- the employees are so helpful and don't make you feel rushed, or like they're watching over your shoulder. Also, they have lots of examples of work so you can get better ideas for your own projects. Food/Drink: They serve the Capital Island beer here, and maybe a few others...but it's also BYOB too! Also, they're more than willing to throw in a pizza for you and your company to enjoy. Facilities: It's so cool- it's an old barn-turned workshop. The location can be a little tricky to find (it's on Peninsula Players Rd), so keep an eye out- especially at night! Note: Many of the projects aren't ready the same day, so make sure you're able to either plan to pick it up the next day, or pick one of their shipping options. Prices: It's about $7 per person for the studio fee, and then the prices depend on the project that you wish to create. My kids and I had a nice afternoon here. There are a lot of options of projects and it has more set ideas for projects but also allows you to try out your own ideas if you want. I decided to do a painting from a pattern. Unfortunately because it was my first time I didn't look at the instructions but rather followed what the worker initially said to trace the pattern on the canvas. Then I looked at the instructions which had me paint the entire canvas in a darker color which completely covered my tracing and I needed to do it again. Frustrating! But, I did enjoy it after this and so did my kids. The glass firing didn't end up super great for one of my kids but they are relaxed about it so I'll only cut back one star to 4. There is also a cat my oldest enjoyed visiting. read more

My only complaint would be the tools. I have a fair amount of experience with artistic crafts (art school) and I would have just had an easier time if the brushes, in particular, had a slightly better range of options and were of better quality. I understand this isn't a necessity for many people, but as someone who was trying to get very detailed with my piece, I found it very frustrating. They're cool with you bringing in your own snacks or beverages. I came with a group of ladies and while we did different types of projects, they let us all do our projects together in the painting barn. It was so relaxing doing art and drinking our mimosas and the staff were super helpful. On my most recent trip, we did ceramics and ran out of time without finishing. We were able to come back the next day for an hour to finish without paying for a wristband. We made friends with the barn cat Squeakers and had a really nice conversation with a gentleman who I assume is the owner. Our projects turned out great. We will definitely be back! read more

What a fun place to visit! My wife and I, along with our three kids spent an afternoon at the Hands On Art Studio this past weekend. Everyone agreed that it was the highlight of our trip. We started off by exploring the different options - mosaics, spin art, jewelry, glass, metal, and pottery. We all agreed to each pick a piece of pottery to paint. The girl working in the pottery area was very helpful offering great advice on colors and how to paint our pieces. After painting for a couple of hours, we handed in our pieces to be fired in the kiln and picked up the next day. Everyone was excited to return the next day to see how everything turned out. We weren't disappointed. All of us (including mom and dad) are looking forward to coming back again on our next Door County visit. The only complaint that I have is how expensive the Hands On Art Studio is. In addition to the cost of the piece you're working on, they charge a $7 per artist "studio fee". This fee adds up very quickly when you have five artists in your family. It would be nice if they offered a family rate of $20 or so. When we came back to pick up our pieces everyone wanted to do another one. I would have loved to do it, but the thought of paying the $35 fee for my family again was a deal killer. read more

My parents made a metal sunflower and butterfly and I made an art piece where I took different shapes (and colors) of glass and then it was put in a kiln. People are there to offer assistance but it really is " hands on."
