Food choices are on blackboards around the pub which I much prefer to menus and looked fantastic - good old pub grub cooked freshly. On the bar, there was no Harveys but there was that dangerous liquid treat; Old Thumper. They had Horsham bitter too which was quite nice. They also organise beer tasting nights which sound really good. £30 which includes 15 beer samples, lunch and nibbles and a comprehensive bundle of tasting notes!

The Red Lion is situated in what was once the pre-Norman heart of Shoreham, before the port and town moved nearer the sea ('New Shoreham') in the 12th century. The river lies just a few yards away on the other side of the road, as does the original wooden Shoreham Toll Bridge, which dates from 1781 and is now a listed monument. However, what could be an idyllic spot is rather marred by the busy road junction in front of the pub and the noise of distant traffic on the new A27. The pub itself dates from the 16th century, and the old part has beams so low that anyone over 5ft 7in is going to have to get used to having to duck. There are two bar areas, a further room and two very cosy booths which sit four people (just about - you'll be very good friends by the end if you weren't at the start) alongside a passage off the main bar. There's an outdoor area at the front, which is fine if you don't mind the passing traffic. They serve a range of up to 5 real ales, which on my visit included two local brews, Adur brewery's 'Velocity', W J King & Co's Horsham Best Bitter, as well as Shepherd Neames' Kent Bitter. They have an extensive food menu of traditional pub grub, with a very wide range of starters, with grills, traditional meat and fish dishes, and salads. Vegetarians are less well catered for in the standard menu when it comes to main courses, although for £10 they sometimes do a mezze of starters which might suit two people. The pub attracts a wide range of visitors, especially at lunchtimes and weekends, but on quieter weekday and Sunday evenings it tends to attract mainly locals. The only downer for me was that the staff were a bit distracted on my visit - more interested in texting than serving. There's a small car park at the side (access from the rear) and the bus stop for the hourly 2A Shoreham-Steyning bus is located opposite the Amsterdam pub on the other side of the roundabout. The return stop is literally in front of the pub.

Other friends have eaten the fish dishes here and burgers and everything is really good quality. The perfect place to hang out for a drink. Try out the quiz (on a Monday I think), listen to live music (Friday and Saturdays I believe). The music isn't too loud so you can't hear yourself speak, just a good atmosphere. With the new menu we thought we'd give them another chance and glad we did! We had a roast yesterday and it was delicious - lots of vegetables, loads of meat and a nice option for my vegetarian husband. We shared a pudding (brownie and honeycombe ice cream) and it was one of the nicest things ever! I wanted another one immediately but controlled myself :) Lovely staff and good table service. Everything from meatball subs to 10oz ribeye steaks were on there for more than half the price of most pubs which tells me its probably not organically sourced from local farms but sourced by a lorry in a cash and carry outlet. It did smell really good though and when you pay £3 for a sandwhich, you can't really go wrong!

It also has a beer garden which is ok. For some people not having sky television in a pub is a big let down but it does stop people from just watching the television. The area around is good and with the dog stadium a 10 minute walk away you could easily start here then go there after. The feel is good and local residents are pretty good. Early afternoon the 'punters' are the guys that come in from work and just want a quiet drink so if you want it to be more lively then go early evening. However, when it's quiet it doesn't feel empty so in my personal opinion I do not mind being in there at that time. I have given it 3 stars because its not the best pub ever but would be worth 4 stars if it had the odd night with something different going on.

It was strange as it was cooked beautifully. The fry on it was perfection with just the right amount of grease so it was not soggy... and crisp without being crunchy. I really thought it was going to be magical, but even stateside I have had better. Such a shame. Portions were large as well. A friend told me I had somehow managed to find the poshest fish and chips in England. I just wish it had tasted good.
