As a social worker I spend a lot of time going in and out of Detroit public schools. I see some…read morethings that really make the hair stand up on the back of my neck. And then, occassionally, I see a few gems. This school is one of those gems. UPA and University Prep High School both use project-based learning so that kids can really focus on the things that interest them. All students do regular internships which are supervised by a local field instructor and a teacher (they get school credit for the internship). This gives them a chance to refine their interests and get exposed to the work world. But, a few things to note. UPA is a bit overrated in terms of it's academic rigor. Although it is a world above most of the DPS schools I visit, not all graduates are going to be prepared to start at a mid-range or top tier university. I've seen kids advanced from grade to grade (particularly in math) who really don't have the basics down well enough. And, another important thing to remember about UPA is that their teaching approach does not work for all students. Some kids need a lot more structure and will flounder when given so much academic freedom and responsibility for their own education. Parents of UPA students need to stay in close contact with the teachers and review their student's work on a very regular basis. Overall, this is a great school. The campus is well laid out, the rooms are clean and things are in repair. There's not a lot of violence. The teachers and staff are very good at communicating with parents and they take a personal interest in their students.

I think its good for the city. Nice looking charter school. We went to take my god daughter b-day…read morecupcakes. You sign in and have to call to confirm. They require the kids to do an expedition project every month which is a good thing for kids to do in my opinion helps them to discover something new. You have to stand in a long line of cars just to pick up your kid but that's better than leting them run around and risk someone taking them. Great School Donate today!!!

What a low class school. Enrolled my son here because I heard the classroom were small sizes so I…read morewas thinking great for my son. So a few days maybe four, they had a small Back to school event at the school so the kids could meet there teacher the event was outside the school in the parking lot. Which is fenced in. I honestly thought the set up was cheap and gave poor institution unsafe environment for a school. But I was willing to overlook it. Because if my son was going to get a good education and be safe inside the school then I would be happy. I met his teachers who were very young but seemed nice. I meet the assistant principal who was interesting lady. I specifically asked her about bullying and fighting in school. Because my son is very nice quiet laid back kid . I needed to know there policy . She explained that they did not accept bullying and they really went on a point system. three strikes you're out so my son started school that Monday and then he had a OK day and then the next day the second day of school a boy in his class pushed him because he was asking them to be quiet while he took a test so a boy walked up to my son and pushed him and when I went to pick up my son from school that day, I asked him did he have a good day and he said yes, and one of his friends proceeded to tell me that he was pushed and a boy tried to fight him so then I immediately went to go talk to the principal and she invited another staff member inside the meeting, and I was proceeded to explain to them what my son explained to me that he was in a class with the teacher, and this boy started talking crazy to him and telling him he was dusty and all this stuff and then the teacher just sat there and listened and didn't do anything and then the boy proceeded to walk up to my son and the teacher just sat there and watched and then push my son and then she decided to intervene after the young man push my son, and I was never notified nobody ever said nothing to me. I felt like that was so unprofessional. I feel like it was unprofessional for the teacher to sit there why some kid push my child I feel like it was unprofessional for no one to call me and say anything about it and I just thought it was just like a horrible experience so when I talk to the principal, they basically let me know that was their first time hearing about it and I thought that was unprofessional because why isn't there an incident report about this kid who walks up on people and just put their hands on him and I asked them what would be the repercussions and all they said is you know they don't suspend kids for pushing it's like it should be a low tolerance for putting your hands on somebody that basically if my son would've hit him back and they would've gotten a fight then they would've got suspended so what type of failed system at that school that a boy gets to hit you and the only way there's repercussions is if you hit him back and you get a full fight, my son never been in a fight in his life so basically he has to fight to get some type of repercussion for the young man putting his hands on him so I immediately unenrolled my son from this school horrible experience do not recommend unless you do want your kids being hit and having to fight, this is not a good School to go to. It has bad leadership, unless you want your kid fighting don't waste your time. I would give zero stars -2 if I could.
