This is a family business: Ray does the prep, his wife (of 49 years!) does scheduling, and his adult grandson and wife assist in the practice. The office is filled with family travel photos and mementos, and small things to make customers feel well served and welcome: water bottles and soda are on the customers' side of the desk, with candy, phone charging cords, and pads and pens. I got a rubber jar opener that Ray gave out last year - his 30th anniversary client gift because I didn't get one then (not being a client). It's in a strip mall on the corner of Newport Ave and Beverage Hill and does t look that reassuring from the outside - but inside is a caring, professional, and friendly group of tax experts. As we sat doing my taxes, about 10 people came in one at a time to drop off, pick up, or ask questions about their tax forms (and one who needed to do amended forms for late W-2s). Grandson Austin handled most of them independently, but was very discreet when he needed quick info from the expert. Ray saved mea SERIOUS amount over last year's federal tax bill (by finding deductions TurboTax - and the CPA we used before last year - didn't offer/explain, at about half the fee I would have paid either of them). He also helped me learn how to pre-pay state taxes to lower my sticker shock next year: I'll always owe RI because my husband's MA pension isn't taxed by MA when it's paid but it's considered fully taxable income in RI. Ouch. Helping me avoid another huge bill next August? Thank you, Ray! Call early for 2026 - they cannot accept any more new clients this year. The office was in a charming historic building in down town Providence. Everything from the hallways to the elevator to the pendulum clock in the office just reminds of a more classical time in the history of Providence, perhaps a better time. Nikki is very kind and welcoming. She has a positive attitude. We sat with her and her father, Larry. They know how to ask all the right questions and they gave us a detailed and thorough consultation. I was really impressed with their professionalism. Best of all, the consultation was FREE! And here is how I know Nikki and Larry are trustworthy. They advised us against a specific business plan and showed us its shortcomings, although they could have made lots of money doing the paperwork for us. This shows integrity. They make it so easy. They send me a copy of my last year's return so I can see all the prior deductions and then I can fill in the current numbers for this past year. They also did my daughter's tax return for free last year. I drop off the packet with my new numbers and within two weeks I have my nice refund. We thought their pricing was reasonable and we decided we would try Jonathan Ucran's services. We were set up with a portal. I was proactive getting all of our paperwork together and uploaded. Once it was all uploaded I checked a few times seeing if there were any notes or things posted on our 'to do' list. Nothing. i reached out to the office and I was told they would get to our info soon and would receive a call withing a week. A week passes- no call. nothing. I call back again. Apologies, they said they were busy wrapping up corporate accounts and withing a week, again, we would be contacted. Ok. gain, no call. I had to call again! This is how our relationship went for the rest of our communication in completing our taxes with their office. We were told that our taxes were complete. They asked us to submit our bank account information so they could submit our taxes. I drove to their office and dropped off a check so I was not charged any fees. The next day we received our RI ax return in check format in the mail?! What?! I called the office. Left a message with an employee. No return call. Call again and refused to accept not speaking to someone. Apparently someone mailed in our taxes without our signatures or our banking information! They said there was a mix up in the office?! Also they tried to blame all our return call issues on Covid. To be clear... they were not returning our calls BEFORE Covid started. I have used TurboTax for years. This was my first experience with paying someone for my taxes. Bad experience. We were sure to alert our realtor about the service we received and next year we will not be working with Jonathan Ucran.

We went to an advertised "free" consultation. I asked a question, and was told it would cost $139 and turn into a tax consult if she answered. So, the free consultation didn't allow us to ask any questions, or else it would become a consultation and cost money...? Make it make sense. I said I understood, she didn't need to answer, yet at the end, after NOT answering my question about realtor commissions counting for cost basis when calculating capital gains, and telling us a tax document was incorrect and sending us on a wild goose chase (it said at the top DOES NOT CONTAIN STATE TAX INFORMATION yet she told us my husband's employer misreported his state tax info, which both other accountants I interviewed caught and explained immediately), she still surprised us with a $139 bill. We paid to avoid a scene as she had other clients, but do plan to reach out and ask for a refund, as we never agreed to pay after being advertised a "free" consult- that contained multitudes of bad information regardless! We were going to be MASSIVELY overcharged had we gone with her, as she was over 10x the price of the lowest option and nearly 10x the price as the next most expensive option, that included audit insurance. We had moderately complicated taxes, due to capital gains on a house. We are not self employed, do not have any investments, own a business, or have any other complicating factor to justify the insane price we were quoted. It took her the full hour to sort through our documents and she still wasn't near done- other accountants ranged from 45 min- 1 hour for a complete consult. She was going to charge us approximately $5,000. Other accountants quoted us from $300-600. (We went with H+R Block due to their audit insurance for an estimated total of $600, which still very much on the high end for filing taxes.) And before anyone assumes miscommunication- she gave us a printed bill with estimated charges totaling $4896. That was not our estimated tax burden, that was HER fee to file our taxes. During the free consults with the other accountants, they both answered all my questions (like one does during a free consult...) and both accountants pointed out factual errors in what we had been told. (See above, some 2024 W2s put state tax information on a separate page/document, and she was unaware of this change, for the most stressful example.) Anne Shade insisted we had to file extra paperwork and called it "difficult" when you sell and buy a house in the same tax year- even though most people who sell a house buy another to have a place to live- and both other accountants explained that in our case we only had to file paperwork on the first house, and any paperwork related to the newly acquired house would only matter when we go to sell. She also gave us information disputed by both other accountants and my own research about the medical exemption to capital gains tax, and the amount of up-front documentation needed to claim that exemption. She was going to file, and charge us for, a ton of unnecessary documents. I do not know how this "free" consult went so horribly off the rails. But I am not the only review online with a claim of being overcharged to file unnecessary documents.
