I'm by no means even close to being a good photographer, but I thought it'd be good fun just to explore a part of London I so love. After seeing the winning entries from previous competitions, we began worry we wouldn't be creative enough to come up with even one good photo, but we needn't have. That had nothing to do with my team's artistic talents, just that the clues and the locations and, heck, London itself are all so inspiring that every team had at least one outstanding photo... and there were over 50 teams participating! All in all, I had a blast, and I'd definitely love to take part in another of their events again. And here's the point I'll admit that one of the reasons I had so much fun was because my team took one of the winning photos, so we'd love to come back to see if we can do it again! Shoot Experience runs treasure hunts taking place all over London. The next one is Shoot Portobello taking place in March 2010. I think previous areas covered include Hackney and South Bank, and a couple of online ones too.

It's not often I need a photography studio. But as I'm writing a book, we needed to take photos of…read morefood and drink, and the publisher booked here. I've never been in a real photography studio before. But I like it. And specifically, I like this one. Everything is thought about. The workbenches are all on wheels which makes styling easier (see? I've been on a photoshoot, I can say things like 'styling'). The natural light in the upstairs studio is excellent - skylights as well as large windows. But the blinds are also adjustable, and they adjust to one camera stop each time (Very Good Thing). Howard's studio is downstairs, and he has an awful lot of props to play with, although it's difficult to bother him while he's working. But you've got lots of pretty things in your studio as well. It's a really well put together place. I have no idea how much photography studios cost to hire. My guess is £lots. But this one is good. Having spent two days in here, I can confirm that it's so well laid out about carefully thought through, it made our job easier. After a 10 hour day, that's a massive plus point on an already beautiful venue.

The gallery itself is very tucked away, if you think you're walking down the wrong street (past the Royal Oak pub on the corner of the flower market), you aren't you just haven't walked far enough yet. Every Sunday, Seamus Ryan opens up his studio. Which isn't a hugely novel thing to do at first glance. But then you realise that he takes photos of everyone passing through. Tourists and nosy people can then buy the prints after seeing them on the website later in the week. Brilliant. Yesterday he took photos of the contents of my handbag. Random. The portraits in the gallery are gorgeous. His print of Tom Stoppard (who popped in with his grandkids) is now in the National Portrait Gallery. The gallery is light and airy and interesting. It's also well air conditioned which is very handy to escape the sunshine for a little while and recover from flowery sneezes you'll get wlaking through the market. So go and be nosy and be in a photo project. They change every week so you know you'll be doing something new each time. Much more interesting than Smallville reruns on the telly.
