If you can see the photo associated with this review (take a good, close-up look if you can stomach it), the meat in the bun was truly weird...a kind of thin shell surrounding some brown gelatinous meat. It was like the inside was completely uncooked, but not red or pink as uncooked ground beef should be. And completely cold. The best I could tell was that it was maybe old, marinated beef (or just old), briefly deep-fried. The waiter (who I think was a member of the family ownership) was mildly apologetic. First he said that it was medium-rare. "Nein, es ist roh! Und braun!" ,I replied. I didn't have the German skills to explain that it is a health risk to serve burgers "medium-rare" in the way that steak is..but that would have been only scratching the surface of everything that was truly wrong with this weird and dangerous monstrosity. Then he offered a free espresso to compensate...but not the price of the burger as I'd eaten the fries. That was a mistake for him, an expense to me, but a great service to you and mankind, as I am now warning you with this tale of woe. I know Driegroschenkeller is supposed to be themed on 30s austerity and hard times, but it's meant to be just pretend, not real privation, disease and prison-grade food.

There is outdoor seating for the warmer months and a big bar on the inside, with lots of choices for spirits and beer. They have quite the selection of beer here, including some local craft beers. The waiter suggested one from a local brewery which was very nice indeed. The menu here is Alpine with a bit of Bavarian and Austrian cuisine, amongst other alpine dishes. The waiter suggested I try the beef cheeks (one of my favourite cuts anyway), and I immediately agreed. There are also a few vegetarian menu items and, a weekly specials card. The portion was decent and the beef cheeks came with a sweet and sour sauce (I suspect tamarind) and, a dollop of parsnip mash. The dish was really good and I loved it. Whilst I am not a huge fan of parsnip, the mash was a nice light accompaniment to the meat, instead of mash potatoes. For dessert we shared a Kaiserschmarrn and it was freshly made. I absolutely loved it and, would give the Kaiserschmarrn 5 stars....yummmmm. It was buttery, moist, sweet and nutty. We also tried their homemade "Almdudler" and that was also nice. Our waiter was very friendly and prompt and I really enjoyed the overall experience. I would happily come back here again. I would rate the food overall a 4.5 star. It's a shame this place is a bit further away from where I live. Prices are reasonable, portions are good and the service is very friendly.
