After reading the great reviews, I was disappointed. The ice cream, we had lemon wafer and pumpkin, was ok, but nothing to rave about. We also tried the chocolate and the maple nut fudge. Both of these were dry and hard, as if they had been sitting out for a very long time. I definitely suggest you avoid the fudge. read more

I'm so glad that my wife and I waited until we returned from a late summer (8/28/25) Hatteras Island ferry ride to Ocracoke Island before having ice cream at Happy Belly. I ordered the Brownie Bomb and my wife ordered strawberry ice cream. I haven't ordered an ice cream with a name like the Bomb since Northern Virginia's Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour offered the "Zoo" when I was a teenager. My Bomb included one scoop of chocolate ice cream, a warm brownie, wet walnuts and hot fudge. Because I'd read good reviews on Yelp beforehand and because we had waited all afternoon for this treat, I added a scoop of vanilla ice cream and I unashamedly confirmed that I wanted the full serving of the hot fudge on top, all for the very reasonable price of $6.50. When I saw that my wife's single scoop of strawberry ice cream could be doubled for a mere dollar more, I convinced her that a double dip was a better deal. I thoroughly enjoyed my Bomb. I felt pretty guilty feasting on ice cream, a brownie, nuts and chocolate fudge. My wife enjoyed her ice cream but also felt a little guilty as well and blamed me for our overindulgence, which I deserved. But hey, we were on a long awaited vacation and we didn't feel bad afterwards. The young folks who served us were friendly and helpful and we were served quickly. The portions were just what we wanted. The quality of the ice cream and toppings was outstanding. We were there around 6 pm on a Thursday evening and the store was clean and not overly crowded. I stayed in Hatteras this past week, and I made a visit to Happy Belly almost every night during my stay. I tried a variety of their ice cream flavors, and my favorite has to be the salted caramel cheesecake ice cream. The banana pudding flavor was also really good and is probably a close second. I also had their banana split sundae which was three scoops of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream topped with slices of banana, strawberries, whipped cream, and a cherry. It was very good but also overwhelming, so you may want to share it with someone else. Not only do they sell ice cream, there's also smoothies, truffles, brownies and other desserts. It's also a candy store, so you'll find different types of candies around the store. The staff were always very friendly and accommodating to our specific requests. It gets very busy here during the evening, and sometimes the line extended outside with about a 20 minute wait. Not sure if it gets as busy during the day, but plan for a bit of a wait if going in the evening. read more

Every year when I visit Hatteras, I have to make at least a few trips to Happy Belly! Their chocolate peanut butter ice cream is to die for, and so are their milkshakes! They have a very wide variety of flavors and toppings and the portions are very generous. The store itself is fairly small, but there's some tables available on the porch. When we went over the summer, the staff was doing a great job ensuring social distancing while keeping the line moving. Can't wait to visit again the next time I'm in town! read more

The happy belly will 100% make your belly happy. The first night my family and I went the line was out the door and down the steps. The second time we went, we walked right in. My pro tip to folks is to go before 8:15pm if you can. Anyway, the staff is really friendly and will let you sample whatever flavor. Since I am kind of an ice cream lightweight, they even did 2 half scoops to equal just one because I couldn't decide between flavors. I cannot recommend this place enough. When my very large group (18 people, kids and adults) walked in I thought for sure that the one person working behind the counter would be entirely overwhelmed. Not only was she not overwhelmed, but she managed every different order correctly and provide samples to anyone who asked. The level of service and efficiency was amazing.
