This is the tale of an inn, once probably glorious, that quit trying. The rooms were very basic--clean, but basic. We had a porch room and had light shinning in our face all night. Some blackout curtains would serve them well. The people above us partied until 2 am. The breakfast was a cold continental breakfast with cheese sticks and yogurt. I'm not going to ramble on about all the missteps. Let's just say the devil is in the details and they've missed all the details. Go elsewhere. read more

Upon arrival the lady at the front desk was extremely sweet and welcoming. We received our keys and were escorted to our room. When we arrived in the room the bedding and sheets had several yellow stains on it. We made the front desk aware thinking they would change the sheets and all would be good. She went above and beyond and upgraded us to a nicer room with a nicer balcony! We were very thankful for this. However this room also had yellow stains on the bedding as well. We decided to roll with it and just put blankets we brought down under us before sleeping. Breakfast was a little disappointing. We were thinking it would be more of a hot breakfast instead of grab and go items. Everything was processed and stuff you can easily buy at the store. The only other thing that we found strange was we placed the "do not disturb" sign on our door because we did not want housekeeping coming in but instead they came in anyways and folded our towels and changed the trash. I would've appreciated them respecting our wishes and not coming in as we were only there for two nights and there wasn't much trash at all. Stayed here for 3 days. Located on the river walk (Harbor Rd) very clean. I'll call it cozy because it's a bit dated and the room was pretty small. It grows on you as a quaint place to visit, and walking distance to the lighthouse, restaurants, the fountain shows and downtown shops. They also have a common area and porch to extend the room. Breakfast was fruit and a homemade bread/muffin. We really enjoyed our stay. On an aside, I think we paid a lot for the room. I would shop around on TripAdvisor etc for a better fare. read more

I just returned home from a seven-night stay at the Harbor House -- attending a Grand Haven High School Class Reunion. I chose it for its location -- walking distance to downtown, the boardwalk to the pier and beach, and the infamous Tip-a-Few (IYKYK). I was somewhat apprehensive based on some mediocre reviews, so I was pleasantly surprised by how lovely the place is. The spacious common room -- where a continental breakfast of yogurt, cereal, English Muffins, instant oatmeal, and delectable homemade pastries and breads are served around a toasty fireplace -- is tastefully and cozily furnished. My room was a knock-out: four-poster bed, comfortable seating area complete with a gas fireplace and big-screen, flat panel TV -- as well as a balcony overlooking the harbor -- was a stunner, and it was clean as a whistle with daily housekeeping. There are communal refrigerators, ice buckets, glassware, etc., which further emphasized the homey atmosphere. But what really made it special was the staff: Sally, Deb, and Chris (a classmate of mine) were so friendly, funny, and professional. And it was a bargain (of course, this was off season). If you want a taste of all Grand Haven has to offer, this is THE place to stay! read more

So I got married in August and my husband was trying to plan a beautiful night at this place that seemed to have rave reviews....I am now guessing that was from the previous owners. After a perfect day on ring lake getting married surrounded by family & friends, we arrive at The Harbor House Inn to check in and no one is around. We called the number, rang the bell and couldn't even get into the lobby. So there we sat, in our wedding clothes, on the stoop for an hr and a half waiting for a taxi, continuing to call with no response from the Inn. Thankfully we had a cottage to go back to, otherwise we may have had to check into a far away hotel or motel since most places are booked that time of year. The worst part about it is, no one ever contacted us back to apologize, no one explained why there was nobody at the front desk or to respond to calls or the doorbell, no one contacted us back via email as we called again and emailed to find out what happened the days following and we were still charged, then refunded but again with no courtesy of an explanation or apology, just a plain email with attached invoice. Surely this has to be some kind of legality for guests in case of emergency that we will definitely look into and file a report as we spent our hour and a half wait consoling a distraught guest who was also trying to get in touch with someone as she had issues with her room. For the price of rooms, they can afford to and legally are supposed to have someone available 24/7. Shame that this still, over a month later, has not been handled. We checked in and were shown to our room by the friendly receptionist. I am not sure how accessible this place is, so if you have trouble with stairs you might need to double check on that. Our room was nice size, very clean, and we appreciated the home-made caramels in our room. We slept great, and after a quick, very light breakfast, we checked out and went on with our day. We have stayed here two different times, 4 years apart. The first time we received a stay, as a gift. We enjoyed it, and had a pretty nice room. This recent time was very different. Our one night stay cost us $350.00 and the Inn did not meet our expectations with consideration of the price point. Our room was terribly small, and "noisy". We can imagine the location of this Inn drives the price but it could certainly use some updating and additional amenities. The "breakfast" is continental style and the coffee was terribly bitter. This morning I overheard two workers gossiping about other guests and their complaints which is quite unattractive. I will say the view is very nice and you have a clear visual of the musical fountain. Will not be staying here again. There are other options in the area with more competitive pricing if you're willing to forgo being on the water. read more

For $260 per night we we expecting a little more. We have stayed at the Pahmer House in Chicago, two different Hiltons in NYC, and countless other high end lodgings all over America. For 1/2 the money. At this price, I was expecting a little more. Expected the whirlpool and bathroom in general to be cleaner - stains in the whirlpool and the baseboard is either dirty or needs to be painted. We couldn't get the whirlpool to turn on - called the front desk at 8:08 am and got the answering service. They had no idea. The bedding, probably comforter or throw pillows smelled like old-person-sweat. Gross. The staff was friendly (if unavailable for our whirlpool situation), and the breakfast was nice. Nothing special, but good. Located near the downtown and musical fountain, but that does not justify being twice as much as the other hotels we have stayed at. read more

The Inn has a wonderful location and is within a very short walking distance to downtown. It is kept in immaculate condition. The room we had was lovely and overlooked the harbor. It was spacious and had both a whirlpool tub and a fireplace. The Inn is known for its caramels which are placed bedside in every room. Charming! The library on the first floor is cozy and has a nice selection of books and DVDs for "check out." We were disappointed with breakfast, however. The offerings were cinnamon bread, coffee cake, mini bagels, fruit salad, Activia yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cheese, and my favorite part, their "special cereal blend." That blend is really just a mixture of Multi-grain Cheerios, Cracklin' Oat Bran, and a couple of other cereals and dried berries. Now, I really have no problem with them mixing together cereals and calling it their special blend, but I think there is an issue when that is my favorite thing they offer. Good luck to you if you keep a gluten-free diet. It doesn't seem as though the price for our room ($170 for a Saturday night in their early fall period) was really worth it, especially considering breakfast isn't anything more than continental. We had a gift certificate, and I'm glad we did because I would be much more upset if we had paid for this ourselves. We likely won't be back - which is a shame, because it's so darn cute. read more

There are really TWO B&B's in Grand Haven. This place and Boyden House Inn. I've stayed at both. Would I go back to here, yes, I would probably not go back to Boyden House Pro's: Location Staff Decor Atmosphere Cons: Price Food (Breakfast is a continental breakfast, similar to what I get at a Holiday Inn, etc). They do have coffee out most hours of the day, and a nice screen in porch. But breakfast is 1 type of ceral, some fruit, yogurt, bagel, muffin, or bread. For the money I spent here, kind of expected a home cooked breakfast or something hot. Big letdown in that department read more

My husband & I were married in Grand Haven on Saturday 7/13. We stayed at the Harbor House on Friday & Saturday nights along with 12 of our guests! This is a beautiful place to stay. All of our guests were pleased as well. Our room was a corner room with a balcony that had a nice view of the channel. The breakfast was great in the morning with a variety of homemade goodies, fresh fruit, juices, etc. My only complaint was that no coffee was available until 8:00am when breakfast was ready to be served. It would have been nice to have some coffee available earlier than that. We would certainly stay here again! read more

This B&B is awesome!!!! The rooms are the cleanest rooms you have ever come across, and each one is decorated differently, some better than others!!!! But it doesn't matter!! Location is great and most rooms have a view of the boardwalk/channel and some have balconies. There is a decent buffet style breakfast in the morning and they always have some kind of home baked goods, snacks, tea, and coffee out during the day for you. There are several common areas and a porch for everyone to use where you can sit and relax and enjoy the scenery there. This B&B is a great place to stay if you need one in GH, you won't be disappointed. If nothing else stop by and get a bag of caramels- they make them homemade and they are to die for!!! read more

If your staying in Grand Haven I strongly recommend the Harbor House Inn. It was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast and was worried about service at first. The staff is very helpful, breakfast was good. Fresh caramels made every morning. You have a pretty good view of the channel that leads out into Lake Michigan, but is sorta blocked by trees. My wife and I stayed in room 23 which had a jacuzzi, gas fireplace which was easy to use, just flick a switch. The Harbor House is in such an awesome location. You can literally walk to bars, restaurants clothing stores. We didn't drive the 3 days and 2 nights here. The Harbor House is wonderful you will not be disappointed. O and we had an awesome balcony with chairs to sit and watch boats go by. Loved it here and will miss Grand Haven. read more

The location couldn't be better, right on the harbor front, within a block of the downtown district. We stayed in the cottage (it was an upgrade, not sure why we got lucky, but we received a free upgrade from our reservation), in the Riverview suite. It was wonderful, could watch the night time musical fountain show from our screened porch. Nice spa tub for two, very clean room, outstanding bed/mattress. Staff was excellent, very helpful, common areas were impeccable. The only disappointment was the breakfast, and that was relatively minor, just not as outstanding as the rest of the stay. The Inn was full, but you would think that is something they are prepared for, but the breakfast foods kept running out, and we had to wait to have it replenished. Also, it's more of a continental breakfast, no hot foods, but certainly a good breakfast is available. read more

This place is top notch. The room was spectacular! We had a spacious suite on the top floor with a jetted tub, fireplace, and a view of the water. Hospitality was wonderful too. We were welcomed at the front door and provided a brief tour. Shortly afterwards, our hostess made freshly baked chocolate chip cookies. The stocked mini fridge on the first floor had snacks, juice, and water which were perfect for when our friends met us to sit and talk on the wrap-around screened porch overlooking the river. The king bed was very comfortable and the A/C unit was easy to use and effective. This inn is centrally located and a very easy walk to several restaurants, the beach, and the lighthouse pier. read more

Very disappointed with the Inn in general. 3 stars because of the location,otherwise would have been less. Room was VERY small. Comforter had several spots. My room was located right by the rear exit and stairs, which made things get loud at times. Afternoon front desk were not friendly. I did enjoy sitting near the fireplace in the common area. Rooms way to small. Smaller than a dorm room. Parking absolutely f'n sucks 19 parking spots and 21 vehicles the night we stayed. When I called the after hour number to ask where to park no answer. So I had to block other cars in cause no street parking. Then the front desk called early morning and told me I had to park in the street. When I mentioned there is no street parking allowed the girl simply said move it to the street. And them to call it harbor house inn it should just be called harbor house B&B. The one thing shocked the out of us was there is no refrigerator in the rooms. All 19 rooms have to share a mini fridge that was already have full of bottles of water. Just enough room for a medium size pizza box. WE WILL NEVER EVER STAY AGAIN OR RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. Matter of fact to will be telling people to stay away. Now I see why the people I work with has never heard of this place. The site also say whirlpool tub in the rooms don't expect much. no bigger than a standard tub than you have at home. Room was cold due to wind blowing in from roof vents for the bathroom vent and fire place vent. Avoid this place spend a few dollars more and stay at one of the big hotels on the main road through Gand haven. This place was so bad and a rude front desk girl. We got out of there "3 and half hours earlier than the check out time" right after the girl said just go park in the street. read more

Not used to paying 4 Benjamins for a room for 2 nights, but felt it was well worth it. LOCATION: There is no better place to stay in Grand Haven, hands down. You are across the street from the Boardwalk/Canal, and a block from downtown shopping and the best restaurants. Sit on the porch downstairs, and you can view the Musical Fountain. You feel like the town was built around this place. VIEW: Opt for one of the balcony rooms, which looks down the boardwalk. Yeah, there are trees between you and the water, but we still loved sitting out there, looking down on it all. ROOMS: There are a variety of rooms available, so be attentive. We opted for a room (#24) with a balcony, fireplace, etc.. All different, all lovely, all clean. Loved the jet tub. Wish the TV was bigger, however. AMENITIES: Lovely library for books, newspapers. DVDs for your room, but you must see an attendant to get the disc. Homemade caramels in your room, and for sale (!). Coffee/cookies usually available downstairs. Some snacks, popcorn available there as well. Great screened in porch with tables/chairs. Wi-Fi good. BREAKFAST: My wife and I appreciate a lighter/healthier breakfast, and this is what HH provides. Fruit, breads, yogurt, coffee, juices, hard boiled eggs, cheeses, etc... If you feel like you need the whole bacon/eggs/french toast type of fare, you might be disappointed. The Dee-Lite downtown serves a good hearty breakfast, and is a quick walk. NOTES: The place stays locked, and your room key gets you in and out of the front and back entrances. While there is plenty of staff around, no staff spends the night there, and can be contacted quickly by phone if needed. Seems to be enough room in their parking lot. This is a 3-story building, and you will be walking up stairs. The elevator is for staff and luggage only. (?) I'm sure they accommodate special needs, but the rest of us walk. THINGS TO DO: Walk the boardwalk to the lighthouse. 2 ice cream stands a block away. Get a pronto-pup (corn dog) at the little stand. Musical Fountain at dark. Shopping everywhere. Restaurants galore. 10 minute walk to the best beach on the planet. Art Fair, Coast Guard Festival, BBQ festival. Santo Stefano's gelato. Kirby's wood fired pizza on their balcony (view!). Concerts on the water. Boat watching. I'm sure I've missed a lot of things, but the HH is into details, and have created a great B&B in a great location, in a great town. This place is great and the staff is super helpful. We stayed here the weekend before Labor Day and had a really good experience. The rooms were clean and spacious and very unique. We had a nice view of the river from our room. The continental breakfast is decent despite a lot of the complaints on yelp. The location is very good. Walkable to the pier, State Park Beach, Chinook Pier and downtown. I'd definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a unique place to stay in Grand Haven. read more

The two stars is for the location. It's in a great spot along the river and a short walk to the beach. We've stayed here 4 or 5 times over the last 7 years or so and this time was a big disappointment. The outside of the inn is in need of maintenance. Vinyl siding coming off and railings badly needing a new coat of paint. They used to have homemade cookies in the afternoons, now it's store bought dough. The worst part was the terrible hospitality in the morning for breakfast. The innkeeper both days we were there never smiled, never said hello and barely responded to any inquiry. What's worse is at 9:30 (breakfast until 10:00) there was no silverware, no cups, no dishes and little food out. We will be looking for another option on our next visit to Grand Haven. read more

Went at the last minute in August and pulled into here to see if they had a room; they were booked but asked the woman if I could use the restroom. She said she wasn't allowed to let me! Wow! I said aren't you a public place, she said no that is why she didn't have to let me. I guess if I am a paying guest, i can use the facility but not if I don't pay. I wouldn't want to be affiliated with any place that does not allow their employee (?) to let people use the bathroom. It wasn't like I had a whole crowd of people, just a friend and I. I am reminded of this as i am about to make a last minute visit again (off season) and won't be checking this place out. read more

Great location, clean, but very disappointed in customer service. Arrived earlier than check-in, so inquired to see if room was possibly ready early. 'Innkeeper' seemed bothered by the fact that we simply inquired. Fast forward 5 hours. We had checked in, spent about 15 minutes in room, walked the pier, downtown, and had dinner. Received a call that my husband's mom was in hospital and we needed to head home to be there for a procedure she was having. We let the gentleman in charge know we had to check out. Room had already been paid for. He said he would explain to Innkeeper. We didn't hear anything back from them. I know we had been in the room briefly already and it would be hard to re-book the room, but I guess we expected at least a little sympathy and/or maybe an offer to come back another time with maybe at least a small discount? Then I thought I left my hair straightener in the room. When I emailed them, I received no response about that or the fact that we had to leave early. I emailed back the next day apologizing for thinking I left it but saying I found the straightener. Still no response. Had this been a larger hotel I may have expected less, but being a small inn, I expected a little more of a personal touch and better communication. read more
