They helped me to get into a Shelter a little while ago. I had slept in my Car and the Shelter wasn't as bad as I thought it would be...because I never had to stay in a Shelter before. I want to take out the time and thank Dan and Juan and the other nice Spanish young lady...I cannot remember her name. However they looked out for me being a Disabled Senior Citizen. Really bad place. They look down on you like you are beneath them. They want total respect yet they raise their voice lie and treat you like garbage. The receptionist here was writing little sarcastic notes on my mail and when I told her that's illegal and please don't do that she lied and said it was the post office lol then all the workers came out and attacked me verbally yelling at me etc. I had to file a report with the cops and civil rights dept of homeless shelters. The receptionist is a nut case lol. They also have no way to forward your mail so if you get your mail there you have to change the address qith every company you get maul from lol its a pain in the butt. There's a blonde dwarf girl there and she's totally rude lol acts like she's on her rag and raises her voice to mentally ill people. Don't go here. There's better places than this. It seems nice because it's a clean nice building but the people in it make this place the most crappy place ever. Harbor Interfaith Services - Package with sarcastic notes from receptionist - Community Service/Non-Profit Near Me - San Pedro, California

The main office of Harbor Interfaith Services makes a conscientious attempt to be responsive to the unsheltered community in need of housing. However, Harbor's failing happens with Beacon Street Bridge Housing in San Pedro. The current so-named Director is a formerly homeless person herself who is functioning in a role that is far above her competence level She treats everyone like she's a jailer and we're prisoners. I stayed there in October and November of 2023. The Director's administrative skills are extremely poor and I reported this to the main office, which seemed not to do anything about it. I believe she's still in that role... And she really needs to be supervised by a clinical social worker who can advise her about how to properly and respectfully interact with homeless people. I found the "Director" personally to be rude, disrespectful, and arrogant - - and her only concern was to be popular among the people being served at that shelter. Never again what I want to go back to Beacon Street Shelter as long as that individual is still in that role. When she wants you out, she turns into a boot camp sergeant, looks up at you (because she's less than 5 ft tall) and hollers at you to "get out!" Such utter disrespect for everyone, except people who brown-nose her. Furthermore she encourages her administrative staff to behave as does she. I don't ever want to be in a position that I would return there. It's like being in jail with an incompetent facility manager. I don't know how anyone could ever successfully work with her in a compassionate manner because she has no compassion, just pride and strong feelings of grandeur at being in a role with a fancy title. The intake office in another block of 9th Street is seemingly staffed with one very conscientious caseworker by the name of eladio (if he's still there in this month of July 2024). The other "caseworkers"see merely to be functional such that if there are funds to assist a client of a particular category or age, they do it. If there's nothing available, they look at you and tell you in a somewhat apologetic fashion that they have no more assistance they can offer you - - such as housing Choice vouchers for Section 8, deposit and rent assistance sources Overall, Harbor Interfaith services seems to have good intentions, but not enough resources to offer clients, especially senior clients. Furthermore, there seems to be no proactive effort to change this situation. All housing benefits to clients seem to be offered on a first come first-serve basis and when those resources run out - - which is usually early in the year - - they have nothing more to offer. Much improvement needed here such that they can be responsive to the uncharted population that needs their help. read more

We are so fortunate to have Harbor Interfaith Services in our area. They serve over 10,000 people a year, and they've been serving more people who are poor or homeless than ever during the pandemic. They provide housing support, food, clothing, hygiene items, and access to medical and dental services. There are some problems with this place and we'll start with the problem that isn't caused by the staff. Harbor Interfaith is where churches and other organizations all over Pedro and Harbor City and Wilmington and the South Bay DUMP the people they have no means or intention of helping. That's right. A single mom whose been dumped by a landlord onto the street who goes to a church or even another nonprofit is going to be REFERRED to Harbor Interfaith. Don't matter what "faith." Hey, listen up, REFERRALS are not HELP. Referrals are an endless time wasting hope draining circuit. And single parents are the FOCUS of Harbor Interfaith. Single parents and children are the focus of many homeless projects. Where is the presence of these churches at this so called INTERFAITH? Do they give money? Do they provide volunteers? Do they even know what happens to someone who walks in the doors of Harbor Interfaith? Like the revolving door that hits you on the fanny on the way out? No, they just prefer to sigh with relief that it aint their problem and are way too eager to put "homeless" into a category they aren't in. A couple years back we met many homeless seniors waiting on the housing help of Harbor Interfaith around the Anderson Senior Center park. The average was two years outdoors - in the street. One woman we met said she was told that it was so dangerous out there and no place for single women so it was better to go through the whole eviction process and be evicted to "buy time." One man told us about being revenged by a local landlord with the big deal attorneys even though he was living with rats in the walls and roaches and had multiple health problems. As for the "help" that is provided, even mediocre canned goods help if you are on their Food Bank list, but Harbor Interfaith itself DOES NOT PROVIDE MEDICAL OR DENTAL OR GR or SSI or any of that. At best they can tell you where to go to sign up for government programs. Further, in recent times some young women told us about how they finally got Section 8 vouchers but the Pedro landlords, knowing this is illegal, were trying to make deals with them on the side to be given more cash than the voucher amount. These greedy you know what feed on their fear of homelessness. Of course, no social worker can refer people to shelters or other programs that do not exist, are underfunded, are full, or who do not take people who do not fit a category. We hear some people were making weekly visits demanding housing from case workers. Government money comes into these places too and so to qualify, you have to meet criteria. Such as already on SSI or SSDI, or in a program for mental health or perhaps addiction. If you've been clean-living and are out of luck, you have to be found in an encampment. You might have to be in that same spot for weeks before a worker comes out to prove you are homeless. Let's be clear. The stats are that a woman new to homelessness will be raped within the first three weeks of being out there. Harbor Interfaith has about three beds at a woman's shelter in Wilmington. Now, there is a wall of honor in there applauding donors but WHO IS DONATING NOW and where is the Board? The computer room, we hear, has one computer operating, down from four, and the seating in there has been broken and not repaired or replaced for years. There is no place to do Zoom interviews. EVERYTHING, I have been calling for days, single adult. When I first showed up over there, they said they had nobody working in housing for single adults. They were trying to hire somebody at the time so I called back four months later the phone just rings and rings and rings. No answering service comes on. Instead of assisting low-income applicants by suggesting, they reside in housing shelters, this organization, which works with Harbor Connect and places people in distressed motels with short-term room payments, the organization should consider assisting applicants that have income with rental assistance and deposit assistance. This would be a much more solid and productive way to deal with many individual applicants who are experiencing financial hardship, especially seniors who've been displaced from their apartments and homes by unscrupulous landlords. read more

After what I experienced today I wouldn't Recommend anyone getting help from them. I'm a DV survivor who is currently trying to flee a toxic home life from my sister and my child's father I told the intake specialist this and she didn't consider me homeless so she told me to wait for the case manager I went outside to speak to someone and I came back in they said their rental assistance program was full to compacity they gave me a bunch of places that could help with a deposit I just told them that I already been approved I only make 1.5 times the rent so I can't get in by myself I need help the intake specialist and the front desk girl was laughing in the office prior to me coming back in. So I left with no help after I was referred by my school and someone who works their I didn't even get to speak to the case manager it's hard enough being black in a world that was built against me but to be treated like that by a place that claims they help people is straight B.S and I was told to go in today by multiple people with all my documents I was hoping to move into my apartment but now that's not happening due to selfish inconsiderate people who don't care about your situation they hear you but they aren't listening, a waste of my time and gas smh read more

I was already pre-approved for $10,000. He didn't do his job and submit the application late so I was denied because they ran out of money. He cost me $10,000. What a jackass. Karma. This place sells lies. They don't help with anything! I filled out a application for the transitional housing program and they said that they are repairing the apartment I was approved for in July 2022. They kept giving me the run around about the repairs still haven't been fixed due to plumbing issues in several buildings they own and they are "short staffed" so no one can fix my apartment that I was approved for. It is currently march 2023 and I keep getting the same excuses. I have a 17 month old baby and they do NOT CARE. I have contacted the Director and left multiple voice messages. I don't get any call backs. I stayed in this building as a adolescent with my mother and she never had these issues. Whoever is running this place is stealing funding and now they can't help people! We ended up getting reffered to a scam artist landlord because Maria Cervantes told her that Harbor Interfaith was going to give her $4,000.00 to rent to us. The landlord, Alma Angulo Escobar would never give me a lease agreement back in February of 2016, which was requested by Maria to assist with security deposit. I was told my case was closed after this landlord moved us in around the end of March. I was cursed out by the landlord who told me in February not to worry about having a lease agreement. I explained to the landlord Harbor Interfaith needs copy of a lease agreement and asked what amount she needed for a security deposit. She told me not to worry because Maria told her that she would get $4,000.00. Why didn't Maria tell this landlord I needed a lease agreement? Because this woman is ridiculous! Now they are both blaming me because I never got a lease agreement to get deposit assistance. I can't wait to move. I have been called every name in the book by this landlord and Maria was no help in this situation. She could have told Alma "You need to provide a lease agreement." Instead she lied and said "I tried to help." She blamed me for everything. Don't tell me your short staff so playing with people and housing is ok. read more

Honestly I'd give this place 0 stars or negative stars if it were possible. My case workers were Latrina Craig before I was able to stay at the shelter and Carla Redmon while staying at the shelter. Latrina has a horrible attitude and does not want to help. Extremely rude. Being homeless is hard enough but having someone that is supposed to help you be rude to you on top of that makes it so much worse. Any time I would try to talk to her I was brushed off like I wasn't important. Once I was able to get into the shelter Carla became my case manager. She wasn't as bad as Latrina which is a plus. My problem with Carla is I informed her that I got a job but wouldn't be starting for a month (due to paperwork). She basically told me that I don't have a job and I needed to continue putting in applications. Also they say if you give them a list of apartments they will help you get into a place. Too bad they are all talk. They want you to give them half of your monthly income while staying at the shelter & when you leave they will give you your money back within 2-3 days. I left the shelter one week ago today and had to go down there to get my money back or who knows how long it would have taken. I went for an appointment today mind you I am disabled AND live upstairs so it is difficult for me to get rides let alone get help up and down my stairs. So anyway, I went to my "assessment " with all of my documents I was told to bring. So, they have some "scoring" system that they use which after going thru all of the questions I DIDNT qualify. I think they way they handle business is poor especially for disabled people. They could have asked me those questions over the phone and I could have saved myself the difficulties of the bad experience of the day. I think it is ridiculous to waste peoples time like that and then to be basically shooed away like some fly was very hurtful as if to say " oh so sorry, too bad! I am disabled and it would seem they could have had a little more compassion. I have to agree with the other reviews of this place and this was from my own personal experience. It seems like when you are down people kick you even more. I usually don't write reviews but I am tired of being mis-treated and not voicing it. I never write reviews but this place Isn't helpful I originally applied for help 04/2019 with Michael being my case manager he never helped i viewed one place with him and that was it He NEVER texted or Called me Back. So months later Ramon Rendon became my case manager he was also my intake worker. So Ramon applied to one place for me within 1 month of taking my case I got the unit 11/2019 but I guess the property owner wanted more Money so Ramon said they were shady and they didn't want to sign any other promissory notes for they unit he said he would look for a new unit. Well we are now in January 31, 2020 I haven't heard ANYTHING from Ramon or Harbor Interfaith. I have been calling and trying to see what's going on cause my job is now being affected. I called Harbor interfaith Today to see If I can speak to my case manager the receptionist told me to allow more time (let them try to assist you) I've been waiting almost a whole year my case managers were already switched 3 times and I still don't know who i need to speak with to help me. The program is amazing . The people that work there are terrible and highly unprofessional. The worker Latrina and her supervisor Sharon are liars . They don't send the companies portion of they rent on time and when you're apartment owner/ landlord ask you for a late fee Latrina and Sharon doesn't care that it was their fault their portion of the rent was late . They will lie to you on the phone saying they mailed the rent on time and they didn't . Latrina and Sharon talk to you as if you have no common sense and constantly say that 'you're very fortunate to be receiving anything' as if the services are there for certain people ...like it's a lottery when it's not . I was told by Latrina that my furniture check was mailed and a week later i was told by Sharon that she had the same check in her hand and it wasn't mailed yet . It took me 2 months to receive a stove because of the lies and inconsistent work that Latrina and Sharon did on a daily . Because of them and their lies the owner of the apartment that I'm staying in will never work with HIF again and that's not fair because homelessness is at an all time high but Latrina and Sharon doesn't seem to care because they lie about what services you can receive and they don't submit paperwork on time or mail rent checks on time . Being homeless with a child for 6 months is the worse but having Latrina and Sharon as your worker and supervisors work is is even more worse . Latrina and Sharon act as if the rent money is coming out of their personal check . It's like they don't want HIF to pay your apartment owner which can cause you to be back homeless . Like i said the program HIF and it's benefits are amazing and it really helps homeless people get back on their feet, but Latrina and Sharon doesn't need to work there if they are going to treat the homeless as if they are dummies and don't produce efficient work for them to not be homeless again . read more

I absolutely had the worst experience while I was homeless and seeking help from them cause 211 referred me. I had been signed up with this company since April of 2017 while I was pregnant and they told me they assist with security deposit, rental assistance, utilities assistance etcetera. They told me to find someone who will accept the program and they will help. However I didn't find any company that will accept the program until sept and by then I done had my baby sept 2017. Donielle spencer was my case manager and she is the worst!!!!!! She didn't communicate with me when I found housing or communicated with the landlord about anything . (But harbor interfaith supposed to be advocates for the homeless people) yea right!!!! Donielle served me attitude and lied about a check that was supposed to be cut within 7-10 business days. It wasn't sent to the property management and I got sent through the runaround meanwhile still homeless. I was approved sept 29,2017 they told me Donielle spencer had to inspect before a check was cut, she inspected the place oct 6 and that October 9 was a holiday and that they not working cause of the holiday. Alright cool . So here comes oct 25th no check and Donielle spencer said " I know you been patient, you could ask my director about the check) She supposed to be my case manager and she didn't manage shit but manage to lie and give me the runaround . This is so disappointing, I wanted to volunteer here especially seeing that the people in the lobby seemed to be waiting around to talk to someone for far too long. Unfortunately I dont think I'll be able to be a short term volunteer around people who are rude and disrespectful to clients who are in need. The intake worker came out a few times to get people's information and would talk to people (hispanics) who came in after us before seeing what we needed. I've been calling the shelter program for three months and not once have I received a callback or has anyone picked up. My sister was referred here because she last lived in san pedro. Rosetta finally came to ask her some questions, (in front of the everyone in the lobby) but got an attitude when she couldnt remember her last address. We've been in this area for about 2 years, but Rosetta continued to tell my sister that she couldnt be helped, she has to go to LA. Rosetta said "there are other people here waiting that I have to see" although we came in 30 minutes before those other people. These people definitely discriminate and have no compassion. read more
