Meals on Wheels helps those who are unable to buy groceries or cook. This enables them to continue living in their own homes, instead of having to live in a nursing home or some other facility. The program is well organized, and run very efficiently (there are only a couple paid staff, everyone else is a volunteer). I like that the leaders continue to drive and serve the clients. I myself am a substitute driver, and fill in when the regular driver is unavailable. It is a fabulous way to do something good, with a minimal time commitment. Without exception, the other volunteers are all good people as well. I strongly recommend it if you have the time. As for receiving the meals, I know less about that. I do know that they interview prospective clients to gauge their level of need. The food is tailored for the client, and they try to fit their dietary needs and food preferences. A food delivery is made on weekdays around noontime, including one hot meal. Call the office if you have any questions.

Over a full month I submitted extensive documentation, completed every intake form, and was completely honest about my finances and my hardship, including deeply personal information. I was denied. The reason: my income doesn't currently cover my expenses. Sit with that. This is a program that exists to prevent homelessness, and I was turned away for experiencing the exact hardship it's designed to address. I was told to reapply once my income covers my expenses...but if it did, I wouldn't need rental assistance at all. The program's own logic screens out the people who need it most and reserves help for those already close to stable. What frustrated me most was pouring a month of time, honesty, and privacy into a process that was never structured to help someone in active crisis. If this program only assists people who are already nearly self-sufficient, say so upfront--so applicants and the agencies referring them aren't misled. I hope leadership re-examines eligibility criteria that leave the most vulnerable applicants with nothing.

I've volunteered at various food banks and this is definitely one of the more challenging ones. Packing/sorting the peaches is a messy job and either that or the onions got some type of allergen on our forearms, making us super itchy. On the box packing assembly line I was given two stations so I worked like a dog as fast/hard as I could so I wouldn't let the rest of the line down even though I probably should've taken a break. It was like an hour long cardio workout and I was drenched in sweat by the end of it, but we got A LOT of boxes packed.

Sometimes theres people that slack but more times there is staff that really help. Ive seen a few adults with developmental disabilities get a lot of assistance from this organization to help them able to live independently, go to college, volunteer, work, go to social activities, etc. Its a great program that can access a lot of helpful services.

My experience with Harbor Regional Center has become extremely disappointing, especially since…read moreClaudia Villa took over as my son's case manager. My son's original case manager, Cameryn Miller, truly advocated for him and worked to make sure he received the services and support he needed. I felt like she listened to me as his mother and genuinely had my son's best interest in mind. Unfortunately, since his case was transferred to Claudia Villa, my experience has been completely different. As the parent of a child with autism, I expect Harbor Regional Center to listen to parents, look at the whole child, and advocate for children who cannot always advocate for themselves. Instead, I have felt like I am constantly having to prove that my son needs help rather than having a team working with me to understand and support his needs. One of my biggest concerns is how my son's evaluation was handled. Harbor Regional Center scheduled approximately an hour-long evaluation with a psychologist. However, the evaluation had to be cut short because at one point my son began displaying behavioral issues. The psychologist told me she would complete the remainder of his evaluation at his school. The problem is that my son presents very differently at school. We have since learned that he is able to mask many of his behaviors, so at school he can appear like a completely different child and be a perfect angel. When the psychologist completed the evaluation at school, her report essentially concluded that he was doing fine aside from a speech delay. This was also before my son received his later evaluation through Kaiser, which provided additional information regarding his autism and functioning. I questioned Harbor about this from the beginning. How can you get a complete and accurate picture of my child when the original evaluation could not even be completed because he was displaying the exact behavioral issues I had been reporting? To me, the fact that the original evaluation had to be stopped because of his behavior was important information that should have been considered as part of the overall assessment. Instead, it felt like what happened during that appointment was overshadowed by the fact that he behaved well when he was later observed at school. I brought these concerns to Claudia Villa. I also explained the later information we received regarding my son masking his behaviors in certain environments. I did not feel that my concerns were taken seriously or adequately advocated for. I felt dismissed rather than heard. I was also told by Claudia that although my son has autism, because he did not display significant behavioral issues in front of the psychologist, he did not qualify. That was extremely frustrating to hear considering his evaluation had originally been cut short because he was displaying behavioral issues. I am his mother. I see the things that cannot be captured during a short evaluation or school observation. My son yells, hits, bites, has significant communication challenges, and displays behaviors that require support and supervision. The fact that he can hold those behaviors in or mask them in certain environments does not mean those challenges suddenly do not exist. I understand that Claudia does not personally make every eligibility decision and that Harbor Regional Center has specific eligibility requirements. However, I absolutely expect my child's case manager to listen, communicate my concerns, and advocate for a thorough review of my child's needs. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience. What has disappointed me most about Harbor Regional Center is feeling like the system is looking for reasons why my child doesn't qualify instead of taking the time to understand why he still needs support. Parents of children with developmental disabilities already spend so much time fighting and advocating for their children. We should not feel like we also have to fight the organization that is supposed to be helping us. The difference between my experience with Cameryn Miller and Claudia Villa has been night and day. Cameryn made me feel like someone was actually in my son's corner and advocating for him. I cannot say that I have felt that same level of support or advocacy from Claudia. I am now having to appeal Harbor Regional Center's decision because I do not believe the evaluation or determination accurately represents my son's everyday functioning and needs. I will continue advocating for my son because I know what I see and deal with every single day. Harbor Regional Center needs to do better. A child should not have to display their worst behaviors during one specific evaluation in order for their struggles to be acknowledged. Children with autism can present differently depending on their environment, and parents' concerns, medical evaluations, behavioral history, and functioning across different settings should all be taken seriously
