They became an outlet for women to get out of the house and to assert their independence by allowing them to get involved in politics during a time when they were expected to be homemakers. Women's clubs helped to launch the women's rights movement. The Punta Gorda Woman's Club was formed in 1925 when three clubs consolidated, The Ladies Fortnightly Club, The Women's Club Civic Association, and The Married Ladies Club. They came together to be able to be able to build a one story Spanish Mission style building in 1926 on land in downtown Punta Gorda donated by Judge William Fenmore Cooper from Illinois. Throughout the years the building housed stage productions, dances, meetings and dinners. The building housed the first library for 30 years and during WWII it was used as a USO. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1991. In 2000 the Woman's Club transferred the deed to the building to Punta Gorda Historical Society. The building is available for rent for private functions from the Woman's Club.

We have never had a bad experience in the three years we've been attending Charlotte Park Civic…read moreAssociation meetings meals, whatever. We have found them to be a very welcoming funny kind group of people and certainly you get your moneys worth there. We are anxious to return sometime when we are in Punta Gorda.

I would like to leave a review for the Civic Center located on Pompano Drive in Punta Gorda here…read moreare the reasons why I left the one star review first of all they only leave you one garbage can for all your trash and expect you to take the rest of your trash in your car second of all they set the AC to 75 and lock it up so you can't adjust it knowing that it will get hot in the facility when a lot of people are gathered. Third of all the event I hosted ended at 10 PM, but took us an hour to clean up an older woman barged in and threatened my 15-year-old daughter, whom it was her quinceanera and threatened her if we didn't have the place cleaned up in 15 minutes. She was gonna come back with the police. When I tried to speak to her, she just looked at me and turned away and walked out a few other reasons why I would like to leave a one star review is the floors were absolutely disgusting they were not swept, nor were they mopped! My guest also were bitten up from sand flies outside of the facility. One of my guests had to go to the ER because of the amount of bites she occurred on her legs and back. I do not recommend this facility at all to be rented out for a special occasion last but not least the man who rented it out to us named Bob yelled at my husband on the phone and told him that "our kind" left the place a mess when we really didn't everything was picked up cleaned up both bathrooms were clean. Kitchen was perfect. The only thing we didn't do was take the trash, but we had it nicely piled up next to the trashcan in the back when Bob called my phone the next day yelling at me that we didn't take the trash my husband went there took all the trash, put it in our car and drove it to a nearby dumpster, I think that's absolutely ridiculous that they only provide one trashcan and expect you to take the rest of the trash in your car, and I was not told this until the day of the event!
