This means I get to sample a lot of cafes far and wide on my lunch break. Today I found myself on the Gold Coast at Chill In Cafe. When I walked in, there was soft, acoustic, blues background music playing, and a rustic atmosphere to suit. The atmosphere here is quiet, but peaceful quiet (not disturbingly quiet). I ordered a pumpkin, avocado and Halloumi stack for lunch. The meal was filling, the ingredients were fresh and oh my lord was the Halloumi oh so tasty. And not too pricey either! Coffee was quite nice, tasty and fresh as well, with no hint of staleness or bitterness. I noticed that they also sell beans here too. I wish I could've bought some for home, however I still have a decent amount of coffee to get through. Their online coffee store (www.coffeebeansshop.com.au) is worth a look, and I'll be ordering a couple of taste testers next time I'm running low. All in all I really loved the experience here. It's designed for coffee loving hipsters to type up Yelp reviews such as myself. It almost made me wish I lived down here. I will be making note of it for future work trips, and will also be checking out their coffee beans at some point in the near future.

The name intrigued him and I can now appreciate why this gem of a cafe is so popular. We both felt like the Eggs Benedict with Ham and the dish didn't disappoint. The eggs were perfectly poached, yolks runny when cut into, oozing a liquid gold down and over the ham, toasted bread base and scattered baby spinach leaves; it was delicious. Two small, flat white coffees rounded out the breakfast bonanza but my friend couldn't resist ordering a cinnamon muffin with fresh cream too. Suffice to say, we left sated and satisfied. From their menu, I had the BLT toasted to perfection with a complementary side of golden shoestring fries. Not only was the bread fresh and had character, the overall presentation and freshness that was from the lettuce and mayonnaise sauce with appropriate peppering. The cheese balls were delicious, a little different from the pão de queijo I'm used to but still melt-in-your-mouth good. My favorite two so far have been the Bisou Tropical and the Intense. The Bisou Tropical is one of the newer desserts. It has passionfruit and strawberry. The Intense has dark chocolate with raspberry. I recently just had a birthday and my partner surprised me with a large Intense cake. It was so delicious and lasted us several days as it was just us two eating it. I love the variety of options they have here and no dessert has disappointed us yet. I guess the reason it might be missed is that it does not really stand out on the main road. Maybe the owners need to think about new signage. But, apparently it does get quite busy on certain days of the week. When you walk into the patisserie you will see two framed awards for Excellence Winner in "SA Restaurant and Catering". Well, that is impressive! Then you are greeted with a smile and a mighty fine selection of very high quality pastries and cakes. They also have a number of large cakes available for purchase. Oh, and the croissants looked so amazing I have to return to give those a go! Each cake and pastry is made with precision and expertise. This is not your general bakery around the corner Yelpers. This is something you need to travel, see and try! Check out the pictures to get an idea. After a very hard decision, I settled with the Gateau a La Orange. I really love a simple well-balanced cake. So, I thought this was a great choice to test their expertise. And it definitely delivered. What I love about the cake is that it is not too sweet. Sometimes orange cakes can be overdone with sugar and a little dense. This one was neither. It was fluffy, moist and comfortably orange in flavour. In fact, I just didn't feel naughty eating it. So they are doing something right! Oh and their coffee comes out in really large cups. Almost mug size! Good quality too, so another tick for me. Aux Fine Bouches, tu as volé mon cœur avec un gâteau! Bien joué!

Just Soy Cafe in Sunnybank Hills makes the freshest, silkiest tofu dessert (dau fu fa) I've ever tasted. I know a lot of people pooh-soy custard because of its texture. Admittedly, it's an acquired taste but Just Soy Cafe offer an extensive dessert menu, not all of which is tofu based. In hot weather, nothing beats their Japanese Maccha frappe - sloughed ice flavoured with sweeteners, mixed beans and green tea ice cream. Alternatively, try their herb grass jelly or one of their ice-cream based drinks for something refreshing. This place is always popular and loud so take-away may be a better option than fighting the crowds for a seat or sharing one of the longer tables with strangers.

Despite the name, it is not just soy; indeed I have been there twice and not ordered anything soy, instead indulging in what they call a frappe (shaved ice with flavor and toppings and a spoon), something called herb grass jelly, and green tea ice cream over adzuki beans (yum). What do I like about it? Well for one thing, they have a lot of bean options for dessert, and these all taste good. Having gotten adzuki beans and kidney beans as well as peanuts added to my above selections, these are genuinely appealing desserts with some useful nutritional value. The mix of flavors is appealing. The place is next to a bus stop, and the ride back to town is quick even at night. It makes a great stop after any Asian excursion in surrounding Sunnybank. The prices are not bad at all, though it is cash only. I may yet find myself back there, but I may continue to sample their (large) menu for a while before I even get to their trademark soy custard.
