Stopped by for lunch on 1/3/2018 upon our arrival in Oamaru. This cafe definitely has it's own personality, I wouldn't know how to describe it exactly but hipster/hippie does come to mind. The cafe is a large open space with baby blue/green walls, mismatched tables, couches and chairs and random artwork on the walls. Where you order your food from has a deli like glass display of some of the pre-made sandwiches and dishes that they offer.
Based on this place's appearance I wrongly expected it to be vegetarian/vegan friendly but that was really not the case. I ended up ordering a bagel with cream cheese and some hash browns. Both were no more than ok. My fiance is way less picky than I am but he wasn't impressed either. The one standout was their frozen hot chocolate which was absolutely delicious.
When we got here it was pretty busy, we took the only two available spots at the time at a community style shared table. There were actually more spots we could sit at but the tables next to them were filled with dirty dishes which were not taken away yet. The cafe got even busier while we were eating and I've noticed that while they tried to clear the dishes and clean the tables in a timely manner, that often didn't work. It is possible they were short staffed that day. read more
