    Books everywhere you look!
    Mackenzie B.

This bookstore is so charming and has an extensive collection of books. And so reasonable! You'll walk out with an armful by the time you reach the register. The owner is very sweet and offered us some stools to sit on while we were looking through the bottom shelf of landscaping books. Pleasant experience and I'd go again.

Between here and there The Douglas Harding book and map shop is a cool place indeed, once an old train station, the venerable building is now filled with all kinds of great old books, maps and prints. We were actually looking for modern maps or an atlas of southern Maine, the kind that you use to be able to find anywhere. GPS is great but only gets you where you are going and doesn't give you all the cool stuff between here and there and the stuff in between is usually the most interesting. Maps like this are quickly becoming impossible to fine and I was hoping that a place like this might still have some. When we walked in the lady behind the desk pretty much ignored us, she was far more interested in doing whatever she was doing. But after giving her my most glaring stare she finally looked up and asked if she could help us. She wasn't a whole heap of help because they really didn't have much in the way of useful maps. Just a few atlases of the whole country with the major highways. But what they did have was a whole room of incredible old prints of maps from the last few centuries. A really impressive selection at really reasonable prices. Also lots of cool old books and even a kitty, who was unfortunately far more interesting in sleeping than entertaining us. A very cool and unique store, we ended up buying several lovely prints of Maine lighthouses. If we had more time I would have loved to look around more and would definitely have spent more money here. I saw some great prints of Maine towns that I would love to have. We did find some cool stuff in the store but ultimately we didn't find what we were looking for and our quest for a map continues. GPS is great for getting to where you want to go, but sometimes the journey is far more important than the final destination.

Nasty, mean owner. No thanks.. Prefer my books in a welding atmosphere. Will never go back there.

They are located in Kennebunk and if you find yourself in the area looking for your next read stop in. They have it organized into genres neatly so you will find your preference of books right away. In the middle of the first area you walk into you'll find tables with popular or books the staff want on display. You can then go to the back of the building and you'll find the books for the kids along with a fireplace set up and a couple of chairs. It's a very nice set up for those bringing their kids. Also off the main room you will find another room with additional genres including poetry, world history, essays and more. Then lastly around the check out you will find plenty of merch with their logo which is an octopus holding a book, which is a really great logo in my opinion. Also to mention outside they did have one table if you need to start your book right after you buy it! Price wise I felt as though it was about the same as other local bookstores. Just due to distance and the fact I have closer local bookstores to me I won't be someone who comes here frequent but enjoyed browsing and checking it out. No complaints and a bookstore worthy of your time!

Most impressive for me was the amount of books and variety. My husband likes sci-fi vampire books and he found one he was really excited about. My teenage daughter likes any book that has been featured on TikTok and they had those too! Along with greeting cards, gift bags and books it's a one stop shop. I'm a bit spacey and forgot my wallet so I was really glad that they took Apple Pay and I could just tap my phone. Such a cool store to have in Kennebunk and a must stop if you are in the area.

Gulf of Maine is one of my favorite indie bookstores anywhere!…read more There aren't many places in Brunswick that date back to my youth that I can say that I've been a fan of and someone who shops there. Gulf of Maine. Not even Bull Moose has been around since 1979, like Gulf of Maine. Back when my politics and literary tastes were still forming, I ventured into the store that Beth Leonard and Gary Lawless were running (on the other side of Maine Street, if I recall). They've managed to maintain a presence in downtown, long after many other similar stores have disappeared. For me, there is no other bookshop that carries such a wide array of what I'd characterize as politically progressive books and authors--Noam Chomsky, Ward Churchill, Howard Zinn, Barbara Ehrenreich and a host of others. But to label G of M as merely a political bookseller misses the point entirely. Both Gary and Beth carry a wealth of Maine writers, too. I mean, even a veritable unknown writer like me has had success selling his titles through their store. Plus, I now know who Ruth Moore his simply because Gary and Beth are a fan and I asked about the bumper sticker I saw on their car that read, "Read Ruth Moore." I believe that bookstores make communities richer, especially stores that don't just cater to the lowest common denominator, or stock merely bestselling hacks and their trade paperbacks, not that there's anything wrong with them. The next time you are in downtown Brunswick, park your car on Maine Street, walk up and down the vibrant main thoroughfare, bordered by an ample village green, independently-owned coffee shops and other unique shops, and make sure you stop in and see what a real bookstore looks like. That would be Gulf of Maine Books.
