I got a tattoo here with Jordan and it was the most pleasant experience from beginning to end. I had the tattoo written out of what I wanted and she took a couple of pictures printed it the size I wanted and placed it a couple times on my arm to make sure it was where I wanted. Had the "triple helix forward" piercing done July 2019 at Hardwire Tattoo. It was explained to me that it would take awhile to heal, I expected it. I was following all of the post piercing care instructions and treating this piercing like a baby. 8 months into having the piercing done, I contacted the piercer because my ear was still swollen, red, and crusty. The piercer told me to spray it 4 times a day and it should heal. Here I am 16 months later.. still red, goopy & irritated. This picture was taken today. Out of curiosity, I stopped by another piercing shop in the area today to have it looked at and the piercer immediately said "take them out ASAP, it was pierced wrong". Apparently the wrong earring was used, should have been a straight barbell and the angulations were all wrong. The second opinion piercer was super frustrated that someone in his Industry did this to my ear and then continued to give me poor advice. When I was told they go by rotation, I asked to see the other artists fine line work. I was told "so he gets a pass and I have to jump through hoops" which made it appear he was making it about race. I politely told the artist that I had seen work from the other person. When I mentioned that I wanted to see work similar to my request, I was told "we can all do fine line. It's like writing our names"- only I wasn't getting script, I was getting fine line with shading and stippling. The lack of ability to choose my artist, lack of work available to see, and the racial-esque comment caused me and my husband to leave without work. The atmosphere was pressuring to say the least. I stopped in the shop to ask about the possibility of a last minute appointment/walk-in and was told all artists book via instagram. I reached out to one of the artists who luckily had an opening while I was in town. On the day of my appointment I met with Zac, talked about what I wanted, show him some inspo images and he turned it into the perfect tattoo. Zac was super nice, made me feel comfortable, and assured me I could make as many tweaks to the design and placement as needed to get it right. So, we came here for a tattoo that was overpriced but it was a walk in so understandable. The girl at the front desk is visibly under the influence of substances. When we were called back for our walk in, they inquired if we had had anything to drink. The person getting the tattoo said 1 drink since we had a glass of wine at dinner. The girl at the front desk ran to the back to "ask the artist" and quickly came back and said they were unable to do the tattoo. The person getting the tattoo and I are medical professionals and alcohol does NOT thin your blood in low doses. Coagulation is not affected with 1 drink. It was pretty clear they wanted to close up and did not want to do the tattoo. I would not recommend to anyone. I think UNCW has some biology classes for the tattoo artists and front desk worker are interested! read more

If I could save at least one person from going here with my review then it is worth it. I have previously gotten tattoos here for the past two years and I have loved every single one of them. However, recently I decided to get my nipples pierced here for some stupid reason. First of all, I was pierced with the wrong size jewelry in both nipples, both balls on the bar had embedded into my skin because the bar was so tiny. There was NO room for swelling and I was not even able to say anything prior to the piercing because I could not see the jewelry. Secondly, when I was getting them pierced I expressed my concern to the piercer, I believe his name was David, about how one of my nipples tends to point towards the floor so I was worried that it would end up crooked. About a month after swelling has resided I realize that the one that I warned him about is pierced too far back and is unable to heal with any jewelry because the bar is not long enough. Also, my right nipple appears crooked as well. Thirdly, the price. I paid $140 for both piercings included with the Jewelry. I had no issue paying that steep because I thought I was getting a quality piercing but I DID NOT. Not worth it do not go here!! read more

To begin with...this review is for the Hardwire Tattoo Location inside of Independence Mall in Wilmington, NOT the Front St. location...since it appears Yelp! has not recognized the Oleander Dr. location near JC Penney. With this all being said, I was beyond pleased with the overall experience I had with Hardwire Tattoo today, plus it had been over 6 years since I last received some artwork. My artist / tattooer was Matt Fischer. Matt is very authentic, eclectic and has an amazing personality. Throughout the 45 minute session, Matt and I conversed multiple times, mostly about our passion for all things "Horror". This is where my tattoo came in to play. I presented Matt with one dozen Horror-themed ideas approx. 2 months ago and I went with the one he was most passionate about...Ghost Face from the Scream series. This was perfect!! Our youngest son's favorite villain is Ghost Face, plus...Scream 5 just finished filming right here in Wilmington in 2020. Matt nailed this tattoo...I mean, he absolutely crushed it and I could not be any more pleased with the end result. All of Matt's lines are super clean, proportioned perfectly and it looked like a sticker afterward. My skin did not endure much, if any, trauma and bleeding was kept to a minimum. This was a flawless tattoo session and experience all around!!!! The shop was very clean, all employees were masked properly and everyone was down to Earth and friendly. My friend and I got 3 small tattoos between the two of us. I got two on my upper right arm and her on her upper left. It took 2 and a half hours for us to get the 3 tattoos. That were each maybe 3 inches each. This was this past Monday the 1st. I got coordinates and a small quote and she got a small outline of North Carolina. He had the stencil sit for 15 minutes each time. Which as someone whose had over ten tattoos this seemed very weird as I've never had it have to "stick onto my skin". Also the house minimum was 60 per hour as we were told. Which normally means that even if you get multiple it costs within the time frame (every tattoo parlor I've been to is this way even for walk ins) and mine only took maybe 30 minutes from start to finish and he charged me for 2 hours of tattooing. And my friends was 12 minutes from start of the needle on her skin start to finish. The tattoo is nice but for what I was getting and how much it cost. I wish I had gone somewhere else. read more

NEVER get piercings done here. I got both of my nipples pierced here about a year ago. It was my first piercing(s) being done outside of my ears and nose, and I was extremely nervous. I told the piercer (who's name I don't know, but he looks exactly like Tommy Lee) how I was feeling. He took me into a room and closed the door, when I took my shirt off, the first thing he did was comment on my nipples, which I find to be extremely unprofessional and creepy. I stood completely still while he drew dots to aim the needle. The first one was fine, painful as expected, but no problem. The second piercing was muchhh more painful and I instantly knew something was wrong from the face he was making while I was looking up at him. ~ This it the important part ~ I stood up and looked in the mirror, to find that one of my nipples had been pierced entirely wrong. The second puncture went through my areola (the part around the nipple) instead of through the nipple. To make it worse it was also crooked as hell. A year and a half later, after months of healing in order to remove the jewelry, I was able to get it re-pierced, only for the jewelry to navigate back into the spot it was originally in. In conclusion, Tommy Lee lookalike fucked up my nipple for life. I paid $160 in total, PLUS A TIP. I called the next day to ask if there was anything they could do (like give me my money back) and I was told I could pay again for the same guy to re-pierce the nipple he had just fucked up..... This place is fucking rip off, with inexperienced, unprofessional, staff. Try Jade Monkey or ANY another local store before here. read more

Your company has a website with a questions tab, I'm just trying to give you money for a Tatoo and you catch an attitude like that ? I wouldn't have you tattoo my dog . Quickly got in as a walk in. My idea was conveyed pretty fast since I had an image on hand. I've only ever had one tattoo done before and this place was quite different in a fantastic way. I got to watch The Office as Will worked. Which was relaxing and nice to have my choice of Netflix shows to watch. Will was incredibly relaxing and knew his shit. He answered questions I imagine he's probably been asked way too many times with patience. Which meant the world to me. All staff was prompt and upbeat and relaxing. It was spacious too. Chuck has moved to Lexington and is no longer working there, but I knew the shop had reputable artists. I walked in and told them what I wanted and me and Sid started planning right away! I was in his chair for an hour and he was light-handed, funny, and made the experience comfortable for me. Yelping through a friends experience, I personally did not give this place my business. However, after seeing how my friend was treated, and the quality of business this place provides I can safely say I will never do business with this place. The shop appeared to be clean, but once you really see the place and the people that work here you feel just absolutely awkward. As a female you probably never want to step into a tattoo or piercing place and feel awkward. Also this place apparently is a favorite of Jenelle Evans who was on Teen Mom, you know the one that gave away her child to her mother? So you can see the type of quality this place provides by her tattoos, which isn't great quality. I'm from California and the comparison of skill from here to NC is just not comparable. Tattoos take more than an artistic eye, and by the looks of the ones coming out of Hardwire you just don't get that here. I highly suggest finding a much more comfortable place to get piercings or tattoos especially if your a female. There has to be much better quality of tattoos elsewhere. read more

For only having been inside maybe two other tattoo/piercing places in my life (purely to look around), this one looked about the same. It was a bit smaller than I had thought it would be, but downtown Wilmington is cramped anyway. They warned us they were in the middle of a remodel (or maybe even a move?) so the place was in a little bit of disarray. This was in mid-December 2007. My friend and I had chosen Hardwire from rave reviews we had heard. The people there were very friendly and upon hearing that both of us were there for nipple piercings, they jokingly announced it through the whole store. It seemed like a fun atmosphere. Appointments weren't required, but we had called ahead to see when their piercer would be there, because apparently he isn't there all the time. He helped us decide what jewelry we wanted and then took us back to the private room. They let us both be in the room at the same time (we wanted to take pics!) and the guy was great. Everything was completely sterile (taken from new packages) and well-done (from what I can tell, I mean, this was my first piercing aside from my ears 20 years ago in my aunt's kitchen). The only thing I wasn't thrilled with was the metal music being played VERY loudly throughout the store. I realize metal kinda goes with tattoos and piercings, but I really would have enjoyed some nice calming Enya or James Taylor, LOL. The process went very smoothly for both of us (but WOW, was that painful - for a few seconds) and they gave us a military discount (small, but a discount nonetheless), sold us the aftercare spray, and we were on our way. Easy peasy. Oh...note of caution on payment - although they say they take credit cards (I believe they had the Visa/Mastercard stickers on the door), they really don't...they have an ATM in the corner of the lobby where you can USE your credit card to get cash. Parking is inconvenient. (Well, keep in mind this statement is coming from someone who is used to smaller towns and private parking lots for everything.) There just isn't much street parking downtown. In fact, is there even any? There has to be parking - but I am not from the area, and it was dark when we went, and we parked in the parking garage down the street. I am not sure why the other person only rated them one-star. The place didn't seem sketchy to me - but then again, maybe a few years ago it was? I also didn't expect an extravagant, spa-like experience. Nor have I been in a multitude of tattoo/piercing places to compare them. But I personally see no reason whatsoever for a one-star rating. That said, I can't give them five-stars because I don't think it was fully a five-star experience. I would do three-and-a-half, but since I can't, I am going to err on the side of caution and go with three, for the insanely loud irritating music (yes, even though that's probably the type of music played at tattoo parlors everywhere) and not actually being able to pay with a credit card. The big question is...would I go back? And the answer is a definitive yes. UPDATE 5/9/08 - I am dropping my review to two stars because I have decided I am not happy with how my piercings were done. Meaning, they were not even - one is through the actual nipple and the second is through the skin behind the nipple. I was willing to overlook this at the beginning, because I thought "Well, it's kinda hard to get them exactly even" but the more I talked to people, apparently other places use clamps, to more accurately position the holes...and this guy just did it freehand. Also, the piercing through the nipple has slowly been working its way out, so much so that it's still very sore and I will likely have to remove it permanently so it doesn't rip through the nipple itself. So I will have gone through the pain and five months of recovery for nothing. read more

I went into this place Sunday while visiting Wilmington and got my tragus pierced on my ear. I got my cartilage pierced there a couple years ago and they did an awesome job, so I wanted to go back for this. FIrst the guy that was taking me back says - I have to go out and have a smoke first - which was rude, he stunk as his hands and breath were all over me. Then I pick out my jewelry, I asked for a stud b/c I liked the look - he says OK and grabs it and takes me back. His hands were so shaky! He said he had a coffee with 3 shots of espresso....not what you want to hear when someone is threading a needle through your ear! He goes on and then loses the jewelry after already putting the needle through...ouch! Then says....uh, well...what do you want to do? Um, I came in for a piercing so I say - do it again. He had to thread it through again, ouch again. Got it in (stinking and shaking the whole time!). I went about my day and night and came back to Raleigh....my ear was super sore and swollen....the next day as I am cleaning it, the back ball came off. I emailed the owner and asked for my $$ back b/c I figured I would need to take it out now as I couldn't get it back on. NO RESPONSE. I went to a local tattoo shop and the first thing the lady says was "You got this pierced yesterday?? With THAT jewelry???". She said the ball came off b/c my ear was so swollen (which it should not be) and that b/c he used an earring with "teeth" it probably cut up the inside of my tragus. She said she could re-do it with a hoop (what you SHOULD always use) but it was so big b/c of the swelling I took it out. $40 down the drain and my ear is still swollen and painful! I would NEVER recommend this place. read more

I went with my mom to get tattoos recently. We went in the afternoon on a Friday so we got right in. My artist, Mike, was great and I'm very happy with my tattoo. He kept the review at three rather than one or two. That's because my mom's artist, Syd, was a bit of a jerk. We aren't avid tattoo getters and he treated us like we weren't worth his time with our simple little designs. When my mom first showed him the design she drew, he simply said "no". After an awkward silence he explained that he wouldn't do a tattoo that small. He didn't really offer up a solution. After being told to "pick it up a little bit" when walking back to look at his drawing and then getting more attitude when we didn't really like his new design, they finally came to an agreement. Honestly, we wouldn't have stayed if I wasn't already in the process of getting my tattoo with Mike. If he's going to be at the most visible tattoo parlor downtown, he may want to get used to having boring white women ask for simple tattoos and try not to scare them out of the door with his rudeness. read more

We hit it off so well, chatted the whole time, and it made the experience go by quickly and made it enjoyable. I love my tattoo! Today, my daughter went to Hardwire and saw Phil and got her tattoo (she just turned 18), and he was great with her. She is very happy with his work and their service. How refreshing it is to know that once my pregnant ass is no longer with child, I will have a decent studio to get my back-piece finished! I came in here the other day with a girlfriend of mine who was staking out a new shop to get her work done, and was pleasantly surprised with Hardwire. This shop is huge and everyone that works here, or at least that was working this past Wednesday, is totally f-ing rad. I HATE HATE HATE when you walk into a shop and the artists treat you like you're retarded or invisible. Not here. These guys literally sat and shot the shit and talked tattoos with us for over an hour. They were extremely knowledgeable and professional and answered all the questions we had and more. We browsed through every artists portfolio and we both found ourselves an artist that will suit our styles. They will even draw up your idea at no charge, and seemingly can get you scheduled for a session fairly quickly, sometimes same day. My girlfriend will start her piece next week. Although I have about 10 months before I will be able to finish the piece my late artist started back in 2002, I have found the man who will do it, who is super psyched about it just as much as I am. I love this and I am so anxious! I also stopped in here this afternoon for a new nose stud and although I have not personally had anything pieced by their respective piercer, she was very nice in helping me find the perfect stud and let me use her mirror. In my opinion, one of the most of obnoxious things is when you walk into a tattoo parlor and the staff treats you like you're just not cool enough to be there. So I am very happy to say that that was not at all my experience when I walked into Hardwire. The lovely lady behind the counter (smoking hot smile) was very, very cool. I got my eyebrow pierced by Gooey, who was also very, very cool. My experience really couldn't have been much better. Absolutely top notch, and highly recommended. I got the owner Justin. He was awesome! Great artist since I wanted something not in the books. The entire staff is friendly, very knowledgeable and just the best. Did it hurt? Of course! It's a needle! Even the best (Justin!!!) can't make it not hurt...he did keep me occupied by talking to me. This is a 5 star establishment.
