As the photo stream will indicate, I've been to Vegeme quite a few times, and ordered the majority…read moreof their menu. Experience shows that their dishes aren't all equally good. They've got a bit of a Korean slant to the menu, and most dishes smell strongly of sesame oil, which is delicious but gets a little same-y after a while. At their worst, Vegeme can deliver something simplistic and lacking in protein; some of their dishes are rice or noodles with sauce and one or two vegetables and without a whole lot else. However, those are good as a light meal, and regardless, you can eat well for your money. At its best, however, this place offers some pretty nice things. Bibimbap should probably be considered their signature dish, and while I waited a while to try it, it was quite good and had plenty of variety with kimchi and bok choy, soybeans and tofu, and carrots and corn with plenty of sauce on the side and rice underneath, and served in a legit hot stone bowl. Other winners include their dumplings, carbonized bamboo rice cakes, corn fritters, their gigantic noodle soups, and the intriguing basil paste inari. And while one might expect a vegetarian restaurant that caters to dietary restrictions to be a small, dingy space hidden in some distant suburban strip mall, this one is a decent location between West End and the cultural center, and gets a lot of foot traffic. It fills at peak hours, but it's also open mid-afternoon when many other restaurants are not. The crowd ranges from Asian tourists to local hippies and quite a few random passers-by. For me, it's generally the place I eat when I don't know where I want to eat, and the real challenge is trying to order just the right amount to get stamps on my frequent buyer card.

Great variety of delicious items, very reasonably priced, clean environment, friendly staff.read more

HANDS DOWN, THE WORST SERVICE I'VE HAD in many years! We had…read morea booking for 5 and got there when only around 3 or 4 others were in the place and it still took well over an hour to only be served one bottle of wine. Other drinks and entree's were ordered, but nothing arrived....one of the 2 wait staff couldn't understand a word of english and was therefore more hindrance than help, and then they charged us $38 for the wine when we decided to leave and didn't care why we were leaving! We went across the street to a Thai place where they took us in at 8.30pm, served us very quickly and the food was fantastic. We were in, fed and out in just over an hour. NEVER AGAIN and I caution anyone against this choice. The food may be fine, but we never got the chance to experience it!!!

Having travelled to Sri Lanka a few times, and fallen in love with the cuisine, I wondered if they could deliver on the real thing, not a quasi version Indian style. Oh, this place does great food. The classic brinjals and cashew nut curry, lots of tasty vegetarian options but also the meats and fish, the hoppers, red rice and on and on. The desserts including jaggery cakes, were yummy. The decor is lovely, the staff truly nice, and the prices, including dinner sets and wines...very very affordable. They haven't been there long so it deserves being discovered. I cannot wait to go back.
