It's called Punjabi Grill and the minute you walk in it looks like a kebab shop as does the menu. Curry, Pizza and Burgers in the same shop. I usually stay miles away from places like this but in this instance I thought I would give it a go. And am I glad I did. I ordered a Palak Paneer, Sheek Kebab and two Tandoori Rotis and the total bill including a bottle of water was £6.20....wow :-)) The food arrived hot, Rotis were freshly made and they also gave me a side salad with mint yogurt to go with the meal. The palak paneer was divine and took me back to my days travelling India and eating at roadside eateries called Dhabas. The Sheek kebab was also tasty albeit a bit dry. All in all a fabulous meal and the place was full of Indian and Pakistanis and like me they were enjoying themselves immensely. One guy at another table was tapping his lamb shank bone to get every bit of marrow and sauce out of it. Another guy licked clean his Biryani and another the same with his pizza. All I can assume is that the other dishes were as equally good as mine. Definitely coming back here for a cheap feed when in Reading. Don't let the looks or the menu fool you ;-)) This place is not located in the best part of town and it is all about the food and nothing more. Drinks list is minimal water or fizzy drinks. Wish they had Lassi on the menu :-(

There were 4 of us there and when we got there we were told we couldn't get a table until 7:45pm (it was about 6:50pm), so we opted to hang out in the bar while waiting for our table. We enjoyed mulled wine and live music (the girl playing the guitar on Dec 7th was amazing) in the bar. At 7:45pm we asked about our table and were told it would just be another 5-10 minutes. Well we didn't actually get seated until 8:30pm. When we finally got seated, our server came over and took our drink orders but then disappeared for 15 minutes. We literally flagged down another server to ask questions about the menu and tried to ask him to take our order because we were starving, but she finally arrived back. We all got the 3-course menu and started off with the curry cauliflower soup and it was great, but it literally took 20 minutes to arrive. It's just soup, so we had no idea why it took so long. For my main I got the baked cod and it was mediocre at best.....dry, no flavor, just not good. For dessert I got the Bakewell tart at the recommendation of our server and it was dry and not great. I'd go back to the bar for a cocktail, but the food and service aren't worth the wait at all.

Unfortunately, after getting seated, it took another 30 minutes for the waitress to take our order, and another 45 minutes for our first course to arrive. Needless to say, we were disappointed by the slow dinner service. Famished, we rapidly inhaled our main course (my salmon kebab was delightful- I'd give the flavor and quantity 4 stars) & eagerly waited for the desserts to arrive. Again, disappointment set in when we took our first bite of stale, dry chocolate cake and an overly sweet tart. It didn't take us the full 3 hours into dinner service to realize that we wouldn't be coming back here again. Step up the service and dessert, and maybe we'll consider The Botanist the next time we're in town!

The crowd of people…read moremade me think it was great but I am really not impressed with this place especially since i came in with high expectations. I've heard that five guys was good while I was in the states but never had the chance to try them out. I did have In N Out burger often (which this place is very similar to in terms of style and serving and the limited menu which consists of burgers, cheeseburgers and bacon burgers) The difference here mainly is that you can add on a bunch of different toppings like grilled mushroom etc-(I'll post the menu) and that they have sandwiches and no delicious shakes or root beer. So I ordered and was excited about having my burger stuffed with deliciously grilled mushroom and onion, lettuce, pickles and tomato. I got the small sized burger which is essentially the same size but with a single meat patty. If I didn't ask I would have assumed they were kid size burgers. However, I was pretty disappointed with the result (photo posted) The tomato was green-which is a personal pet peeve. I need my tomatoes to be always be a rich red. There were only a few scraps of lettuce and the mushrooms lacked the meaty and grilled goodness that they should have. I wish the onions were cut thinner and caramelised properly too. They also don't ask how you would like your meat (mine was medium well from what I could see)however the meat was probably the only tasty part of the burger so I almost wished I ordered it without the bread which you can do. The bun really wasn't special and didn't taste fresh. Okay-so the chips were nice. They also post where they got their potatoes from on a board every day. They are big and chunky and you get a lot but was it worth 2.75? Not sure. There was a bit too much salt for my taste and I like them slightly crispier which these are bit on the soft side. I need to try the new shake shack in covent garden to compare how this place holds up but I have a feeling it will be much much nicer. If you're looking for a good burger in reading you're probably better off going somewhere else outside of reading since I don't know a place here with excellent burgers yet. Maybe if byron burger opens up or gourmet burger co. Although the one I wish will open here is Stacked burger which I had while I was in the states. The most delicious burgers Ive ever had. You can build your own burger on ipads on your seat and the variety is amazing. I miss it more now! So yah- you can get much nicer meals for the price (7.50 for one patty hamburger and little fries without a drink)

I've had it a few times in the states and have always enjoyed it so I was looking forward to a similar experience at the Reading location. I walked up to the counter and the lady who took my order was very friendly. I'm picky about what goes on my burger and she got everything right. I sat at the bar stools which overlook the river and shops/restaurants below, nice view and great for people-watching. Here's where the experience started to go downhill a bit. The lady behind the counter mentioned that they would call my number once my food was ready, but the music was blasting so I couldn't hear them. One of the six or so staff members standing around idly could have easily walked it over to me (there were about 10 other people in the restaurant and I was the only one without food so pretty obvious it was mine). I can kind of overlook this though, guess it's half my fault for not paying more attention. By the time I finally walked over and got my meal, it was a bit lukewarm. The portion sizes are good, I got the "little" burger and "little" fries and both were pretty hefty. The burger was really tasty, had no issues with it, same as I remembered. The fries were pretty limp, which was disappointing. My whole meal came out to £10 (drink included). Overall I was satisfied, but probably wouldn't come back to dine in with the annoyingly loud music. Good burger though, I might get just the burger (hold the fries) to-go in the future.
