Something kept beeping every half a minute or so - low battery fire alarm? The young waitress thought there was no free soft drink with the starter I was ordering while it was clearly mentioned in the menu. Aside the above minor points, the place was busy even on a Wednesday night. I picked traditional Nepalese dishes, bit unusual the wheat / flour mix I added a photo off, sticky texture , mouth-watering lamb curry, spicy sides, and a free mango juice that you have to drink straight from the carton with a straw. Really tasty food, friendly service, nice touch with the dishes pictures in the menu. I would try new dishes in the future!!!

We ordered about 7 dishes and shared them family style, 3 orders of naan, and 3 sides of white rice. It was enough for 6 very hungry people. The food seemed a bit sweeter than Indian that I am used to but it was a pleasant change. My favorite dishes were the fish curry (tikke masala?) and the butter chicken. My only big complaint was that the chickpeas in the chana masala weren't cooked all the way through....al dente. We didn't eat most of it. The dishes were all nicely spiced - nothing too outrageously hot. Nice selection of beers. We never got to dessert as we ordered way too much food! So in addition to a wonderfully warm welcome, we also were served delicious food with great portion sizes and small prices. The curries were hot and delicious, and so far we haven't found 1 thing on the menu that we have not liked. My personal favorite is the garlic naan and the Singapore noodles. Be sure to ask the owner to do an impromptu magic show for you as well!

The salads are brown round the edges and uninspiring, the curries are glutinous slop with gristle wallowing in them. Order three beers and you have just been cast in the role of resident alcoholic. The price though, is cheap. Completely and utterly rock-bottom cheap. The quiet and unassuming waiting staff (I'm guessing all members of the same family) and polite and helpful and totally charming. As such, it's an ideal place to end a night on the beers. You're not going to offend anyone, you won't be too much out of pocket and the food isn't going to have you on the Thunder-box the next morning. It's the first Indian restaurant you get to down the Reading road, and there's a taxi firm just round the corner. Decor wise, I'm guessing it was last touched, when the menu was last revised.

Technically a chain (because there are now two of them), this is a very small independent player, competing on Reading's "coffee corner" with six other shops within 100 yards (Starbucks, Costa, Coffee Republic, West Cornwall Pasty, Pret and the one-off independent Picnic). This location of Workhorse (the other is in West Reading) is in the historic King George Hotel, believed to be one of the very oldest buildings in Reading and dates back to 1423. The shop is a completely unique split-level and since they only opened recently, is still quaintly hand finished. Certainly a nicer character than the cookie cutter Starbucks. If the competition is only about the coffee and the service, Workhorse wins hands down. Choosing my beans (eight little tubs of Guatemalan, Ethiopian, Kenyan and more I can't recall), they were ground right then and there, put into a one-off drip filter and hand watered into my coffee cup. Talk about fresh! And the food choices are all local, which made my ham, chorizo and cheese ciabatta completely guilt-free. The guy serving me was happy to talk coffee. He was particularly engaging regarding their style of coffee making as well as my thoughts on french press. He didn't get drawn into comparisons with "the other guys" across the street. (Literally, across the street - you can see their bright green banner in the window in my picture!) All of that would be worth five stars, but I have to take one back because sadly, there is no free wireless available in the shop.
