Upon trying on a random pair, the passing staff member (who was actually serving another customer) threw over her shoulder at me "those are too big for you". I was confused, did she mean me? She then ignored her customer (who was hunting for a specific pair of frames) and listed out to me all these reasons the glasses I happened to be trying on were wrong for me. "They're sitting on the bridge of your nose" was one of the things she said to me. Are glasses not supposed to go on your nose? Should they be on my chin? "The glasses are too wide" The frames felt very comfortable to me and I told her so. She told me "well they're too big for you. I wouldn't sell them to you." I'm sorry, you won't accept my payment if I do like these frames enough? I could not believe she actually said that to me and so I told her "that's ok then I won't purchase glasses from you at all, certainly not with that attitude." She then turned to her original customer and started going on about why she was right in her assessment of the frames on me. I was fed up at this point and put the frames back and left the store. That was not customer service. Your job is to suggest recommendations, NOT shove your opinion down my throat. You did not ask me if I needed/wanted help, nor did I ask for help. Furthermore, when I told you I found the frames comfortable, you stop talking about your non-reasons for why I shouldn't buy them. Absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. If you need glasses, I suggest a different Specsavers branch because the people there are useless and rude.

Both of these window displays have been a cut above the usual mannequins and posters you see in every window along Ponsonby Road, and I can imagine they do their job well - they must work wonders on potential clients! I know I'm really tempted to change optometrists simply based on these works of window art! The women that work in Grace Lang also seem to be pretty lovely. When I stopped to photograph the windows they came out and talked to me and were completely fine about me taking the photos, as well as complimenting the artwork themselves. This friendly laidback attitude is another reason why I'm seriously contemplating changing to Grace Lang! Whether you wear glasses or not, I recommend popping along to Grace Lang just to have a look at their windows displays - they're incredible!

The creative window displays are impressive and attention-grabbing. Good selection of trendy glasses. Store assistant was nice and pleasant. Exam was uneventful. Grace Lang was professional, though not friendly, but also not rude. She caught that my prescription of 10+ yrs had changed. When it was time to pay, the amount was more than what was quoted on phone. The trial pair of contacts used in the exam wasn't included with the price. I wasn't told this during the exam, so it felt almost like a bait-and-switch. Some places provide complimentary contacts. Some will even give a few pairs for free to hold you over if you're low on contacts. Some will charge extra for a pair of contacts, but they usually ask you first. My experience with Grace Lang Optometry taught me to clarify the pricing extras beforehand. My longstanding online contacts supplier requires a prescription confirmation from the examiner before shipping the contacts. When I asked the Grace Lang store assistant if they could handle that, she said yes. A few days later, someone from Grace Lang Optometry phoned me to ask permission to release information to the contacts supplier that contacted the store. I granted permission. A few weeks later, I contacted the contacts supplier to find out why my contacts had not arrived yet. They were still waiting for confirmation from Grace Lang Optometry. I phoned Grace Lang Optometry to find out what the hold up was. The sales assistant placed me on hold, then came back on the phone and apologetically said that the store does not provide that service. Why was I not told that from the beginning? Or when the contacts supplier initially contacted them? The poor communication was a huge inconvenience, and greatly delayed my shipment. I have not returned to Grace Lang Optometry due to my negative customer service experience. Maybe there was a new sales assistant who didn't know the policy. Maybe the optometrist herself was having a bad day. In any case, I have since found a better and friendlier place to go for eye exams.

But three of my family members, who are not so lucky, have been faced time and time again with the daunting task of hunting for these 24/7 accessories. Nicholls Optometrists (we always called it "the Browns Bay one") proved a winner all round. After multiple trips into this place with my family I can safely say the staff here are as friendly and onto it as they come. The real stand out, I thought, was the honesty that came from the sales assistants who had no problem openly admitting that a pair of glasses looked ridiculous. And lets face it - when spending a huge sum of money on something that may define your face for near eternity you certainly want some honest opinions, even if they come out harshly. Moral of this story... I have traipsed through so many bloody optometrists with my picky mother, opinionated sister and couldn't care less father and every time we all ended up back here. The glasses may not come as cheap as some other places but the service, selection and dedication to the customer puts it clearly in the lead.
