While most of us are trying to get a well earned lie in or nurse a hang over there are many out there setting up stalls to sell their wares and even more getting out there to sample the fresh produce of fruit, meat and cheese sellers and hand crafted materials and jewellery. When the weather is good or the 'farmers' know there will be more tourists out on the street there seems a better turn out and the market is the best way to sample some of the areas best local goods.

There is always an excellent mix of stall here selling produce such as sweets, plants, coffee, cheeses, specialist sausages, specialist meats, beers, smoothies, cakes, black & white pudding and much much more. Many of the stalls have free samples to try and the smell that emits from the market is delicious. The produce on sale is often more expensive than you would find in supermarkets but this is to be expected. The produce is of an excellent quality and you wont find many of the specialist items in supermarkets at all. This is a great addition to the Lark Lane community.

This market, held on the last Saturday of every month, is bigger than its counterpart in Woolton Village, although it does suffer slightly in comparison as half of it is on the edge of busy Aigburth road. A great plant stall selling lovely and unusual bushes at very decent prices greets those who enter the market from Lark Lane. The kind of stall Woolton is missing out on. There's myriad cake and bakery stalls selling pasties, pies, pastries and bread and the ever present Savin Hill Farm meat stall, which sells sausages presumably butchered in Heaven. Last time I went, today (28 August), there was a fantastic flower stall with some of the sunniest sunflower bouquets I've ever seen for a mere £3. A very good place to visit every now and again, but it rarely changes, which is a shame.

It's the largest market in the area, with over 30 stalls ranging from vegetables, meat, fish and bread to chocolate, cheese and beer! There is nothing better than fresh local produce - you just can't beat it. So my favourite stand? Well I have a few. Bees and Honey, Born and Bread, Cottage Cakes, The Chocolate Garden, Mrs Kirkhams, Tiresford Yoghurt and I think I better stop there. But there are just so many really good stalls. There is plenty of space for parking, so don't worry about buying too much as you shouldn't have far to go to get back to the car!

No really they do.....listen to my story.... Early to bed, early to rise, makes you healthy wealthy and wise. I wish I had the discipline more often to follow this, because then I'd b able to get up to go to these markets as they are normally open so damn early. I'm an owl you see, a creature of the night if you will. How this happened I don't know, trust me I absolutely crave that deep breath of fresh misty air at dusk. Birds chirping is music to my ears. What is a man to do though surely when for 8 months of the year, it is just not possible!!! That dusk never comes, the moody clouds they doth spoliage my morning sun. The temperatures do so knock my spirits out "cold". I have thus, since as long as I can remember reverted to the warm comforts of my bed sulking and turning my back on the 6am singing birds. They call me still but I listen not!!! I am lost in the night..... Then comes the month of June and then July, when the sun returns and the birds rejoice as I call it water under the bridge and rejoin my fresh air friend and we begin again our summer affair. I return to the markets of am. Here is a good POA!! You see you go for a jog at 6am sharp in the park, there is no one around...perfect.... you want to be alone with your thoughts, none of this ipod rubbish, just listen to the purity of the beat of your heart and the surrounding life, birds,insects,wind et al. It is divine I tell thee. Nothing gets your energy levels back up faster than concluding your jog by a stop at this farmers market. Grab yourself some fresh fruit, some juice, some fish for lunch and anything else you fancy. The natural smells will whip up some natural energy and jump in your step and you are ready to take on the world by the time you've made it home cooked and slammed your breakfast. The market is a launch pad to start your weekend. It beats the hell out of a depressing nature of a loser hang over nursing an ego from another unsuccessful night on the pull...Ah the good old ignorant student days, I miss them NOT!!! There is ample parking as you would expect. The meat is local sourced and of an outstanding quality, I can't believe I used to waste my hard earned money on cheap supermarket meat, the difference in taste is all too obvious. The veg is also local sourced and surprisingly cheap, the veg will stay fresh for much longer than supermarket bought produce. The shop also sells local bread, orangic squash, chilli jam, chilli sauce, eggs, preserves and other organic produce. The Staff are cheerful and are always happy to help.

There's something for everyone on the second Saturday of every month in this village, which, I'm told, dates back to the Doomsday Book. There's a stall selling great meat, for sure. But better than that there's someone with a griddle cooking sumptuous and sizeable lamb sausages and burgers from the same stall. Cooking them perfectly, and putting them with onions, relish or blue cheese sauce if you so desire. Not a fan, then try the hog roast. If you can get past the full pig on a stick, it's delectable, especially with apple sauce. For vegetarians there's a smaller savoury selection, olives, but a great choice of desserts from the Pudding Compartment to the few bakery stalls. The Woolton in Bloom stall raises money for those wonderful ladies who make this archetypal village look so good, hanging baskets and flowers adorning almost every wall and lamppost. If there is a problem with the market it's that it rarely changes. On the odd occasion the crepe man turns up, though, it's a real treat.

Selling produce picked, harvested or slaughtered as close to the grounds as possible, this charming little farmyard is the kind of place you expect to see a jolly children's TV presenter leaping out from behind a tractor to tell you some fun facts about ducks. The shop was alarmingly not as pricey as I anticipated. A lot of the produce cost the same as it would in the dirty city, only it hadn't been mercilessly processed by unemotional machines and tasted deliciously fresh, as opposed to artificial. We went strawberry picking one fine saturday to Kenyon Hall Farm. The farm is not too far from J22…read moreof the M6 and has a decent sized car park. The only way into the picking area is through the farm shop and cafe. You queue up, choose a picking basket and follow the teddy bear to get to the strawberry fields. Spend as much time as you like, pick as many strawberries as your basket can hold and then return to the farm shop and pay for the day's haul. The farm shop also sells locally sourced meats, sausages, vegetables, preserves, jams etc. They also have a cafe selling hot and cold food and drinks, which are reasonably priced. In addition to picking your own, you also have the option to buy potted plants and bring them home. I think we got some basil, mint and chilli. I thoroughly enjoyed the strawberry picking experience, which was enhanced by a sunny day. I would definitely recommend this place, especially if you have little kids that need to be entertained on a fine summer's day.
