Andrew staircases and…read moreladies As with many towns and cities, the first hint of a public library in Manistee started in around 1885 when an enlightened group of women decided the town needed a place where the citizens of the town could have public access to books. So they just sort of started storing the small collection of books wherever there was room but realized a more permanent location was needed. So in around 1903 the women get serious and managed to get funds for a library from the famous philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. By 1905 the grand library was open for business. The library was designed by the famous architect G Harvey in a cool Beaux Arts Classicism style. The building featured a grand and massive entrance as well as elaborate staircases and other interior detailing. The library of course has changed a lot throughout the decades and now has the latest computers and digitalized materials. However it still features the elegance and aesthetics of the original design. The library has friendly and knowledgeable people working there and a very logical and easy to use system to locate books or other materials. Lots of places to sit and read or just loiter around. A wonderful library that has a unique appearance and a spacious interior that allows the visitor to be comfortable while conducting business or research.

The building is designed in a charming arts and crafts style and also serves as a starting area for the wonderful biking and walking trail nearby. The library has Internet equipped computers, adult and children's sections and a sunroom area with magazines, newspapers and comfy chairs. Any time I have orders items, the librarians are willing to check the status of the items and are pretty helpful. The one improvement I would like to see would be a few really comfy chairs or couches. The ones they have are Stickley style and have wood arms, which makes it a little more difficult to curl up in with a good book.

The details in this library are absolutely breathtaking inside and out. Come here just to see all of the beauty, and wonder why people don't put nearly as much love into making buildings today. Prior to the shutdown, I visited and looked for several books for my son. I did notice that some of the kids books, at least in the "dinosaur" section were pretty worn and old, so I was already worried about germs. Post pandemic, they are open limited hours and don't allow browsing in most sections, but I have still popped in several times to pick up books. They "quarantine" books upon return to make sure they are safely ready for the next visitor. Reading is a great thing to do during the pandemic, so keep visiting the library!

I had a great experience here this morning. I was taking out a book and a book-on-CD to listen to…read moreon a long drive. I'd planned to mail the items back when I got to my destination and was done with them. But the librarian suggested that I renew them such that I could keep them until I return. She then marked them as due Nov. 6 which works perfectly. Nice customer service!

I am continuously amazed by this place. The staff is excellent. For a smaller library they have a…read morehuge selection and what they don't have they will get you in such a short amount of time. Every summer I am doubly impressed by their children's summer reading program. They go the extra mile to involve the children in reading and make them readers for life. I just attended a children's program--Rainforest Animals and it was wonderful. The kids enjoyed it so much. It's an excellent way to keep them occupied during the summer so that they aren't getting bored. I know that most people already have their own assigned library but I believe that you can still come here, especially for the children's programs. If you are from out of town I highly recommend coming to this library. Best staff, best selection, best programs.

Carnegie fires and…read moredairies The first hint of a library in Ludington was in 1872 when a collection of books was shuffled around various places in the town. By 1877 a local hall served as a kind of permanent location but when the hall burned down the books once again became vagrants. Fortunately the incredibly wealthy Andrew Carnegie was tossing around zillions of dollars for libraries at this time and the town of Ludington managed to get their hands on some on the cash. So in 1906 and nice new library was built and stuffed with books and other libraries thingies. It served well until the town start expanding and the library became a bit cramped. So the library had a major expansion and renovation in 1975 and presently is in the process of planning for another spurt of growth. The Ludington Library had a bit of a scandal in 2011 when a librarian wrote a rather candid book called Library Dairies, which exposed what "really" goes on in a library, complete with local drunks, dossers, light skirts and perverts. She ended up getting fired but received a settlement after suing. I didn't see any drunks, dossers, light skirts or perverts when I was at the Ludington Library but I did see a pleasant little library that functions well and is a convenient place for the community to get some books, do some research or just relax.

A friendly atmosphere and coffee out for the patrons on the honor system add to the good vibe. Not much of a book collection, more of a community center. If you're here to study or work, keep in mind there doesn't seem to be any kind of silence policy except maybe in one of the reading rooms.

Although we are up North at our cottage only during the spring, summer, and fall, the Onekama…read morelibrary is a constant for us while we are here. Besides having free WiFi and a great place to work (which makes extended stays possible), this library offers an amazing amount of resources, given the size of the town. Of particular note is the adorable kids section, which is quite handy during rainy days when kids feel cooped up inside (yes, speaking from experience). The staff is so friendly, and the front entryway always has info on summer events. We love this library!
