It seems a bit smaller than the other, but is always beautiful on the inside and stocked with one of the wider selections in Dartmouth (especially compared to the ancient-by-comparison store on the Forest Hills Parkway). The staff is friendly and accommodating, usually with one or two people working the floor specifically to make sure customers find what they're looking for - a welcome change compared to other store policies of "we'll help you, but you have to find us first."

So "in my day" buying liquor involved going up to a small caged window and whispering a request to a unseen clerk who would slip back an unseen bottle in a brown bag. But today things are quite different. Take my experience at the Tacoma Street NSLC - where I was greeted by a Budweiser girl, offering me a nice cold beer that she had just pored - especially for me! How could I refuse - something about a big special promotion for a football game coming up soon;-) Well there is nothing like a Bud girl and free beer to put me in the mood for shopping. And this is a great store to buy the essentials for the SuperBowl. Its large, spacious, well laid out. Today there was a centre display with some good wines on sale - again "in my day" there were no such thing as sales on booze. There was a sales person who pleasantly offered assistance regarding single malt scotch - and other NSLC offerings. There's lots of parking, although it was very busy today with people making their way in and out of the adjoining grocery store. I left with all hands and arms full of supplies that I hope will last beyond the big game. I will also take with me a great feeling about this store, the great service - and the hope that every time I shop there, there will be a Bud girl with a cold beer to great me.

The store was much better laid out than my previous visit. I had no problem finding lots of local brews this time; there was at least one fridge dedicated to local craft beer. They now fill the 1L smaller growlers where they used to only fill the 2L not saying I am a lightweight but 2L is kind of a lot of beer to drink on a "school" night when you ain't sharing. Staff was pretty helpful this time around too. Had a good convo about local IPAs with the guy who filled my growler and he offered to checked their upcoming keg stock for me when he found out I was a fan of a particular brewery. He didn't like one of my favorite IPAs but I won't hold that against him. RockHead is much easier for me to get to than Bishop's Cellar. Look forward to becoming a repeat customer.

I had to go home and get my physical ID and come back. When I complained the man working there proceeded to to argue with me and was very rude. His coworkers were even apologizing for him. I am a loyal customer but this is probably my last time there.

I personally think Bishop's Cellar would benefit from having a bit more of a description system. Perhaps a little placard with some details: eg: dry, full, organic. These are also excellent for stipulating how wines have placed in wine shows. eg: 91 pts. Whether or not you're a connoisseur you can use these to determine which ones you might be interested in trying. That's as opposed to picking the bottle with the prettiest design/colour combo. (hey, that's what I fall back on) Good local and imported cold beer options too! The absolute selling point of Bishop's Cellar has to be the hours they keep. A beer/wine store that's open until midnight on Friday's and Saturday's as well as holidays has been a saving grace for me on more than one occasion!

I guess that's why I was asked no less then 4 times by 4 different staff if I needed any help. When I said I was looking for NS sparkling wines, I was directed to the NS wine section, not there. So I thought I'd try the bubbly section, which I could not find but found a display of "Holiday Sparklers", not there. Another couple of display and finally success, not sure what the theme of the display was but found a couple of NS sparkling wines, though not what I was looking for so I just gave up. So I head to the cash with the five bottles I did find that I wanted. The cashier, one of those who finds everything to be "perfect", rings in my purchases. I mention the bottom line seems very light for what I bought. She looks at the receipt and says "no, that's right" so I pay and when I'm finally allowed to look at my receipt I discover she's only charged me for 4 out of the five bottles. I bring it to her attention and the apologies and excuses of being new are repeated "perfectly" while I pay for the 5th bottle and make my escape.

This particular location is HUUUGE, with a ton of selection. They've got chilled white wine (love that), the giant beer cooler fridge thing (bring a sweater) and excellent staff who are more than willing to help you if you're not sure what you're looking for. This is always our go-to place for weekly wine, though we do tend to stray to the more boutique wine shops when we're looking for something extra special.

But when you're surrounded by people in this store on a Friday night and suddenly everyone else looks 17, you're going to feel like the Crypt Keeper. And I did. It did not help that the cashier ID'd everyone until he got to me, gave me the stoic 'old person' nod, and rang me through. Had I not already been clutching a bottle of Bourbon, I would have had to been surgically removed from the hard liquor section. As for the NSLC itself, it is convenient for the South End weekend scene so long as you can retain a scrap of self-esteem when faced with the fact that you have gotten older. And if you can't, at least there's plenty of booze nearby.
