A wonderful expanse of greenery, creeks, and recreation. This location has all the equipment one would require to have a ball. If that ball being used is a basketball, football, or baseball you're in luck as this area includes all the amenities one could possibly imagine. You will not be wanting or bored at this place of play. Have fun, play hard, play safely, and leave the park cleaner than when you arrived, please. The only downside is the trash piling up, perhaps new garbage bins / recycling program would be beneficial to combat litterbugs. read more

Came here for the scrimmage, tackle football yesterday. I am only here to comment on the bathroom. The women's bathroom had 3 stalls. One was clogged, one working, and one working but without toilet paper. It was dirty. Granted it's the people (the family / spectators) that made it this way but my god... lines were 20+. Basically a terrible place to hold 300+ people at once. read more

Currently camping here for the night for AIDS/LifeCycle. This park is beautiful and spacious with lots of tables and chairs nestled between tall giant gorgeous trees. It rained most of the morning but luckily the sky cleared and we got some sunshine. Even with all the rain, and about 3000 attendees, the ground was not muddy and icky. This was the first time at Harvey West Park quite different from a parks around our area ( Pasadena ) we're new to the area just visiting. Really nice park. We didn't look around much just attended a birthday party. We love to go back and take time see what's around. read more

I've been coming to Harvey West Park for my entire life over 30 years. It has everything a pool, playground, baseball field's, batting cages, fields, a snack bar, soccer fields, spaces to rent for parties and a huge hall with bbq pits. It's truly a beautiful area was so much to offer but the huge downside is how many homeless and transient there are all over the place. There is a Ranger on site but they just don't have the manpower to police it. There are people shooting up and doing drugs, passed out, motor homes and cars people are living out of and people getting into fights so not completely safe to bring your kids unless you have a very watchful eye. read more

This place is a hidden gem! I have gone here in the past for soccer events when my students are playing club teams. Today I went here for a wedding reception. Tons of parking, tons of places to have a picnic (or multiple soccer games) and a reception hall.... AND A POOL? AND A PLAYGROUND! You know you have reached the motherload when you can have a wedding reception, some picnics, a pool party and a quince in the same vincity. read more

I cannot think of a single place on earth that symbolizes my childhood more than Harvey West park. All my little league games were played here. The batting cage was down the street. This was our pool, where we'd dare each other to go off the high dive. I remember several birthday parties. And of course, what seemed like hours climbing on the antique locomotive, pretending either to pull off masterful train robberies or thwart them. Today, the high dive is gone, and the train is roped off and replaced with a playground that has lots of plastic, rubber, and sand. That's why this park was 5 stars 20 years ago, but only 4 now. Accessibility tip - You can bike here from downtown. Head up Mission street and turn towards Holy Cross church. Take a left towards Cabrillo highway and then take the overpass. Follow the path down the hill and you'll be at the southeast corner of the park. read more

Harvey West Park is a pretty nice little park, with just about everything you'd like to have in an outdoor recreation area (aka park). It's got some nice trails for walking, a pool, and not one but TWO playgrounds; one for big kids, and the other for little kids. The play structures on the playgrounds aren't all that impressive, but they get the job done, and the fact that there are quite a number of proximate picnic areas more than makes up for it :-) Many of the picnic tables here are shaded by some pretty spectacular Redwood trees too; this park is recommended for a nice time! read more

The recent updates on the playground are wonderful! It has always been one of my go to parks to stop at, but now it's at the top of the list. There was still that creepy camper on the street, but the other riff raff has seemed to move on. read more

We came to the Scounthouse here at Harvey West Park for a family friendly wedding reception and was surprised how nice it was. It had a full-on kitchen, indoor fireplace, plenty of tables and chairs, clean restrooms, and a bar area. There's plenty of outdoor picnic tables and BBQ pit, but since it was a rainy day, the indoor space was a nice backup. The hosts of the reception did all the cooking there. Amazing food that came out of that kitchen! Took a peek and although it's not spacious, it had a stove, sink, oven, and a huge stainless steel fridge. Layout was great too. You can use the main room for dining and the other room for tables of hor d'oeuvres, drinks, cake, dessert, and gifts. read more

I used to love this place and took my kids here a lot to play in the playground and go for swimming lessons. The reason for the three stars is that in certain areas and on the nearby street areas are homeless people hanging out everywhere. Recently I parked not far from a group that were living out of their van and had emptied there stuff and laid their belongings everywhere. They had others next to them drinking alcohol and doing what appeared to be drugs. This park is supposed to be a safe place for kids and families. It needs to be patrolled more often and not by Just security guards. Give up our park back! read more

I come here once a year while participating in the AIDS Life Cycle. We, and by we I mean 3000+ people, camp here for one night during our journey down the coast. There is a little league field, a pool, even a really old cemetery! The cemetery is a gem, I suggest you go and take a stroll to find the "lady of the night." The picnic area is very large and covered with large trees to shade you from the sun. I can imagine this being the place to be in the summer. read more

Incredible park with just about everything you could possibly want in a park. It boasts large group picnic areas, trails leading up to Pogonip, a swimming pool, a very cool cemetery nearby and two small playgrounds, one for little kids and one for bigger kids. You can even rent the clubhouse for events. The playground structures are not nearly as impressive as those at Blue Ball Park, but it has Blue Ball beat on the picnic area front. Not only are there several picnic areas, there are more tables in each and they are beautifully shaded by redwood trees. It's a great place for a birthday party, for sure. read more

We visited this weekend and were looking for a playground for the kids - so glad that Yelp was there to guide us here. It was really clean and had great swings (one red one that is like a chair), slides, climbing stuff, sand area. Really good for kids 5 and under. Benches for picnicking, BBQ pits and a big old train. Lovely park, unfortunate issues with homeless people. I really hope santa Cruz cracks down on these issues.

This is a good park. Two play structures, one for older kids and one for younger kids. Both are decent in size for either age. There is a pool right next to it and a ton of playing fields in the vicinity. I would have loved to give this place four or five stars. However, how can you have a train directly adjacent to the park and not allow kids to play on it? I understand it is real, but kids love trains and having it so close without being able to play with it is just cruel. My son asked every ten minutes or so for the "train". read more

Every year, the Arthritis Foundation's CA Coast Classic bike ride goes through here and stay the night in this park. Love the fact that it has lots of trees to keep the wind out and great shade for the overheated cyclists. read more

I stumbled upon this park about a year ago when my fiance first moved to Santa Cruz!! We were out driving around with the dogs and saw this spot!! It made us instantly think to the day when we have kids and bring them here!! The park is very well maintained and lots of places for all kinds of activities. Lots of parking! Next to the park is a super cool cemetery! You have to see it to understand exactly how neat it is!! The park is dog friendly as long as they are on a leash. read more

As an adult, my desire to spend time at parks is limited. However, I took my nephew here when he came to visit and we had a blast. This is a great spot to take kids for a fun afternoon out of the house. read more

HWP is a local oasis. Never mind that the pool's high dive is no more, the rec swim is still a good time with only a low dive. The old train is a classic to climb on, and if it still runs the little train is a fun kiddie ride. Mostly though HWP is about the rec fields, whether it is baseball, soccer, football, or ultimate frisbee season, here is where the cities youth competes. The field's also serve for dog shows, frisbee competitions, group functions, etc. The clubhouse has hosted many a party, as has Wagner's grove (many a teenager got their first drunk on back here) and the clubhouse and the barbeque pits/table areas can be reserved. The cemetary does the occasional tour, and is a slice of history to be explored on your own. The cool thing about the park is how many ways you can get to it with trails approaching from all sides. Must say I liked the old play areas more than the hygenic new ones, but oh well...The park hops in the summer and pretty much chills in the winter, but is always a nice spot to Cruz in... read more

Harvey West park is a beautiful park. Have come here countless times when not visiting Evergreen cemetary and to escape downtown and just relax or play or what have. As a person who was homeless for sometime, it was a great place to enjoy the park after eating at the soup kitchen or visiting the Homeless Resource Center up the street to get mail or messages. It was always a trek to come out that way from downtown so it was nice to have a spot to chill and relax before heading back downtown to figure out what the plan was for that night. Santa Cruz really has a lack of resources for it's homeless population and unfortunately isnt an issue that can be swept under the rug, so complaining about the homeless at Harvest West is rather insensitive. There are very little places for the homeless to go in Santa Cruz and the places that do exist require a massive trek or money for public transit and back in the day Santa Cruz lacked funds to help support the homeless better improve themselves. Harvey West was one of the few places the homeless could relax at, just like everyone else. When you go to parks like these to recreate, picnic, use the massive facilities we all are solicitors taking advantage of public services for free, so why complain about the homeless as if they are lepars and not human beings just like yourself. Have we forgotten how to share, or what? I've also visited Harvey West park for family events, gatherings, picnics and sporting events as well and have always been pleased but the amenities at this park and how well kept things have been. Not to mention how much space this park has. No matter how many people are there it never feels too crowded. I miss parks like these, you don't have that luxury down in Southern California. read more
